Greenbelt Harvest Picnic Announces 2015 Lineup with Gordon Lightfoot, Kathleen Edwards, Basia Bulat

In 2013, Neil Young & Crazy Horse were due to headline the Greenbelt Harvest Picnic, but they had to cancel, replaced by Gordon Lightfoot. In 2015, the environmentally minded festival will once again be going with Lightfoot as its headliner.

The veteran Canadian songwriter heads up a bill that also includes Kathleen Edwards, Basia Bulat, Gregory Alan Isakov, Martha Wainwright, Dinner Belles and more.

The event takes place on August 29 of next year at Dundas, ON's Christie Lake Conservation Area. It emphasizes environmental conservation and the eat-local movement. In addition to the concert, the festival will include a farmers market, horticultural workshops, art vendors and more.

Tickets go on sale on Saturday (November 29), a full nine months before the festival. Adult tickets cost $79.50, plus fees. Youths between 11 and 16 get in for $19.50, while kids 10 and under are free.

Tickets will be available from Ticketbreak.com, by calling 1-866-943-8849, or at the Hamilton store Picks and Sticks, as well as Dr. Disc.

More lineup additions will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Gordon Lightfoot, Kathleen Edwards and Martha Wainwright are among the initial acts announced for next summer's fifth annual Greenbelt Harvest Picnic at Christie Conservation Area.

Other performers on the bill for the Aug. 29 daylong food and music fest include Ontario folksinger Basia Bulat, Hamilton alt-country darlings The Dinner Belles and American singer-songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov, Harvest Picnic producer Jean-Paul Gauthier announced Wednesday.

Gauthier said he would be announcing at least four more major acts in the weeks to come, including two that could be considered headliners.

"Many more additions will be announced in the New Year lending once again to a very dynamic and exciting line up," Gauthier said.

Lightfoot, Wainwright, Bulat have all performed at the Picnic in previous years, but this will be the first time for multiple Juno-nominee Edwards, a former Hamilton resident now living in her native Ottawa. Her last album, "Voyager," made the short list for the Polaris Prize for top Canadian album.

In 2014, Rolling Stone magazine called Isakov's performance one of the best at the Americana Festival. Isakov's latest release, "The Weatherman," debuted at No. 5 on Billboard's Folk chart.

Harvest Picnic tickets go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. on line through www.ticketbreak.com, or by calling 1-866-943-8849. You can also purchase tickets in person at Picks and Sticks, 140 Locke St. S., or at Dr. Disc, 20 Wilson St.

Gauthier said he was offering a limited number of "early bird tickets" at a discounted price of $79.50, plus applicable fees. Last year's full price tickets were $99.50.

Children, 10 and under, are admitted free to the Picnic while discounted tickets are available for youth 11 to 15.

“The vibe” is what makes the festival stand out

It's not easy putting on a ticketed outdoor music festival in this city. We've become spoiled by long-standing free shows like the Festival of Friends, Burlington Sound of Music and, more recently, Supercrawl.

So no doubt there are a lot of people wondering why some 4,000 people would shell out about $90 each to attend the Greenbelt Harvest Picnic on Saturday at Christie Lake to see 20 acts, including the Arkells, Gordon Lightfoot, Lee Harvey Osmond, Bahamas and The Rural Alberta Advantage.

First of all, ticket prices for quality entertainment aren't what they used to be. People are often spending pretty much the same price, if not more, to see the artists of their choice in arena settings like First Ontario Centre or soft-seat theatres like Hamilton Place.

Of course, you don't have to worry about rain, when you're sitting in a hockey rink. Then again, you don't get quite the same ambience as you do in a picturesque setting like Christie Lake … or the swimming, the farmers' market, the specialty foods, high-end crafts, fishing and horticultural workshops.

That unquantifiable thing known as "the vibe" is what makes the Harvest Picnic stand out from other festivals. A ticketed festival draws a crowd wanting to see quality music in a relaxed setting. It's what musicians refer to as a "listening audience."

You don't get roving bands of adolescents drawn to a midway scene or too-tight-to-move crunches at the front of the stage. You can sit back in a lawn chair and enjoy the show without worrying about someone stepping on your feet.

The musicians understand that "vibe" and respond to it.

At one point in his afternoon set, Colorado folkie Gregory Alan Isakov and his banjo player decided to unplug their instruments, step in front of their monitors and perform a good chunk of their set through just one microphone. Moments like that add intimacy and warmth to an outdoor event.

"You guys are quiet, and nice, and kind," Isakov said appreciatively before leaving the stage. It sounded kind of corny, but it was true.

There were plenty of moments like that throughout the day. You know you're at a quality festival when the audience can spontaneously come to the aid of an artist as it did when singer Basia Bulat's autoharp became unplugged midway through her closing song. The crowd quickly clapped out an on-tempo rhythm for Bulat. The crowd didn't miss a beat. Neither did Bulat.

This year's fifth annual Harvest Picnic had its challenges, including the last minute cancellation of American folksinger Iron and Wine due to a contract squabble. And the day started out overcast, which may have kept some potential festival goers at home (luckily the threatened rain never came).

It was also the first Picnic that didn't have Daniel Lanois as its musical host. He's performing this year at Supercrawl, instead.

Still, "the vibe" held, allowing other local acts like the Arkells to take the spotlight, closing the festival with a dazzling 16-song set that drew heavily from the band's Juno-winning album "High Noon."

Hamilton singer-songwriter Terra Lightfoot also shone — several times during the day. She opened the main stage entertainment as part of local alt-country collective The Dinner Belles and returned a couple of hours later with her solo band to showcase her stunning new album "Every Time My Mind Runs Wild."

Lightfoot returned with The Dinner Belles to the secondary "front of house" stage for a second rollicking set of hillbilly standards that included Woody Guthrie's "Hard, Ain't It Hard" and the Flatt and Scruggs barnburner "Rollin' in My Sweet Baby's Arms."

And, at the end of the night, Lightfoot was called to the stage by Arkells' lead singer Max Kerman for a powerful duet of the Smokey Robinson classic "Tracks of My Tears."

Other moments that contributed to "the vibe:"

The standing ovation given to Canadian musical icon Gordon Lightfoot. At 76, Lightfoot's voice is a frail shadow of what it was in his glory years. But the power of his three closing songs — Sundown, Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and Early Morning Rain — raised the crowd to its feet, bringing Lightfoot back for an early evening encore of "Baby Step Back."

•Kathleen Edwards, a Hamilton resident for several years before returning to her native Ottawa to open a coffee bar, jokingly asking the audience to keep an eye open in local flea markets for her recently stolen 1957 Gibson Les Paul guitar.

•Thompson Wilson, son of Lee Harvey Osmond's Tom Wilson, performing a too-brief solo set that included a song he wrote two days earlier about the break up of his band Harlan Pepper.

•Hamilton's Tomi Swick giving the audience a preview of the rootsy new album he's working on with local producer/drummer Dave King. His new song "Liberty" shows that Swick hasn't lost any of his songwriting talents.

•Dave Rave's soul-inspired rendition of Teenage Head's "Let's Shake with Oakville R&B singer Hailee Rose (not to mention her rendition of Aretha Franklin's R.E.S.P.E.C.T.).

Hi friends.
This was a wonderful festival.

Marian from the Mountains and I made the trek down early Saturday morning to ensure we could catch all the wonderful acts that appeared on the bill.

As as supporter of the Greenbelt folks we try to patronize them best we can.

There were no disappointments that's for sure. A full slate of wonderful performers surrounded by hundreds of vendor booths offering the best of organic foods, fruits, veggies all now in season, many arts and crafts folks and even a wine and beer tent.

The grounds were spacious and the event was well organized. Very friendly folks, many with their families and fortunately the weather gave us it's blessing.

Said hi to Rick as he was passing by. He was concerned about the weather changing as it was becoming quite overcast towards the end of the day and Gord was scheduled to come on at 7:25PM but fortunately it turned out fine and Gord was there on schedule as usual.

Being the ultimate professional he is, despite having to deal with "vertigo" as his doctor was treating him for, and having to travel a shaky bus ride to the gig, he delivered the goods.

As I keep saying, that voice is getting stronger. There's always a little "raspy opening of the pipes" but once that passes, the strength finds it's way through.

Marian took some videos which she's trying to put on Facebook as I've not a clue but if she gets them up and you'e on Facebook listen to the vocals, and even though Gord was dealing with a health issue the voice was there.

More later. Long day it's been but a good one.

Regarding my last post
I apologise for a couple of remaining typos and the incorrectly parsed final hyperlink. both errors caused by the bulletin board and uncorrectable because for some ungodly and silly reason when I try to edit my posting , (whilst correctly signed in I might add )the board insinuates that I am not signed in which royally pisses me orff.

I do the PHOTOBUCKET thing because it serves a dual purpose of storing the photo on a site for me and it's easy ( ONE step) to put them up here from Photobucket. - I opened the links you posted and I am not reading all of that.
Post the tutorial in 3 concise steps without all of the extraneous verbiage/dialogue/photos and I might consider it, otherwise photobucket is the way the pics will be put here by me...
