Wow - I like these "survey" things, James. Cool! Gives me something to think about while I'm lamenting the fact that I'm not up there with you guys.
As far as the answer, well, I'm afraid I have two answers, depending on whether I'm determining which song on the list is my favorite vs. which song on the list I think does the best job of "closing" the album.
As to the former - The Pony Man.
As to the latter - well, that's a tough one, but I think it comes down to a toss up between Drink Yer Glasses Empty and Sometimes I Wish, simply because each of those songs has a final line that is just so "final."

Good thread, JJ. :)

thx for participating, folks… interesting picks… i think Melissa nailed my intent (which i didnt properly state): which is your "favourite closer" … for instance, Did She Mention My Name is one of my fave songs but I think it as a closer seems add… may be a cool opener, imo

my choices, ranked: Too Late for Praying, Cabaret, Sometimes I Wish

and Peaceful Waters right up there as a closing message which has always struck a chord with me: "Within my heart there lies a spring where love and peace abide and from that spring there flows a river fine through all the countryside but few have drunk therein and why I do not know...
may this world find a resting place where peaceful waters flow"

I'll tag along, Pony man, Hi'way Songs, Drink Yer Glasses Empty, ahh

I think if we were talking the original "The Way i Feel" then it could be up there too (but the second release, doesnt seem right to me as a final album "ring")

Another cool thread:)

My choices are:

1. Highway Songs - an upbeat end to a sort of sad album
2. She's Not the Same - love the fade out
3. Sometimes I Wish - last album, speaks for itself

I'll try to rate them all from favorite to least favorite.

If I Could
Too Late for Prayin'
Pony Man
Drink Yer Glasses
Hi'way Songs
Did She Mention My Name
I'll Tag Along
Broken Dreams
Sometimes I Wish
Uncle Toad Said
She's Not the Same
Patriot's Dream
Auctioneer
The Circle is Small (I like the first version better)
Too Many Clues
Cabaret
Slide on Over
Peaceful Waters
The Way I Feel (Wouldn't put either version in the top 100, but this version is worse by far).

If he had titled the song "Cabernet", I might have moved it up a couple of notches.☺

haha… well Peaceful Waters is also in my top 5 for closers ;)

remember, I'm not asking for the favourite songs from this list, but the ones that make for best album closers/send off to the listener (which could be the same choice anyhow)

in this day of ipod shuffling (even Sony Walkman's did that!) and iTunes single song buying, the album sequencing of songs may now be obsolete anyhow

Too Late For Prayin'. The perfect track for putting the Sundown LP to bed.

This was an easy one for me! "The Patriot's Dream". So powerful, amazed this wasn't on "Songbook". I Think it might be one of Gordon's greatest songs. Up there with "Wreck" and "Trilogy" in my opinion. "I'll Tag along", and "Drink Yer Glasses Empty" in second and third place!

Tough choice, but going with 'She's Not the Same'. If it was alllowed I'd pick 'Is There Anyone Home' (Hey, surely I'm not the only person who always played side 2 first?).
