TEEN TIMERS - 1954 picture

Orillia Museum of Art and History:
The Teen Timers was formed in September 1954 with Bill Hughes singing bass, Gord Lightfoot baritone, Terry Whelan lead and Bob Branch tenor.
With only three months practice the group entered the Ontario Championship Competition at Massey Hall and placed sixth out of fourteen quartettes. Throughout the rest of the term they did an average of two engagements a week at service clubs, town gatherings and school events. They lined up a job at a Muskoka Lodge and spent a solid summer of singing and good times. Twice weekly, they appeared in the resort’s floor show and at other hotels in the district.
Late in the summer of 1955 they received an offer to go to New York to try a couple of records but a couple of the boys wanted to further their education and the offer was declined. In November 1955 the Teen Timers placed second in the Ontario Barbershop Championships at St. Catharine’s. The next year the group continued to sing together for a time but with Bill Hughes entering university in Toronto and Bob Branch leaving school to work in town, close to two years of harmonizing excellence came to an end.

Actually I have a suspicion that the orginal duo that Gord formed later with Terry Whelan (that is better known as the Two Tones) was at one time called the Two Timers. A name also used by my other musical hero Buddy Holly. Of course I may be wrong (I will try to remember to definitively check later it is hard to do so here as I am at present using a very badly set up computer in a famous New Jersey Rehabilitation Instutute (learning how to walk again whilst my broken left femur heals
(broken in a clumsy silly fall in my hotel room in Portland Oregon on October 27th dammit.

Buddy's original recordiong of That'll be the Day was recorded in 1958 in Nashville (I balieve I am right in saying it was in (Owen) Bradley's Barn with his embroyo band the Crickets but the recording company insisted on using studio musicians so the resulting disc was billed to
"Buddy Holly and the Three Tunes".
A young Gordon Lightfoot recorded there a few years later and actually used the same session guitarist (one Grady Martin).
That is today's trivial iota of trivia!!

we've seen this photo a few times, and there are a few others of the Teen Timers…there were stories of these fellows and the Collegiate Four a few weeks ago at the Lightfoot festival in Orillia, told by elderly classmates of all, wonderful stuff

there is an issues posting photos still but John seems to have if working (I hope your recovery from the nasty fall is rapid, Sir! take good care)

it was unfortunate to hear the Bradley farm burned in the 80s… I would love to have been a fly on the barn wall for the four days in 1968 when Gord, Red and Stockfish recorded all those wonderful tracks on Back Here on Earth, wow

I have written this at the rehab Unit's day room computer (a severely restricted Windows XP machine) as an alternative toay watching the usual boring daytime television from my rehab unit bed
hoping to be let out by December 5 but had to forgo the usuall splendid family Thanksgiving lunch as well as any chance of getting to Massey for once. As some small consolation Susan should visit me later with a sample plate.

I have now revised them
the error in both was an extra and extranious http:// (http://)
inserted at the beginning of the two non functional URLs as I pasted them caused by the stoopid bulletin board program's regrettable habit of declining to remove the proferred http:// when an entirely correct URL is pasted (from the clipboard no less) directly into the "insert Link" popup that err umm pops up .
IMHO this is a completely unnecessary feature/aberation.
It should be programmed so that pasting a complete kosher URL (which of course should already include the necessary http:// (http://e)) into the insert link entry box automatically overwrirtes any existing text such as the aforementioned and offending http:// therein so that in this case the unrequired and therefore entirely superfluous http:// is not inadvertently duplicated
Meanwhile unless Florian can figure out a correction it behoves all punters tryng to insert a clickable URL to preview and correct as neccesary.
To sum up and add insult to injury I find that the really annoying thing is that using the "insert link" feature is itselt surely superfluous because
there is in the Aditional Options menu below the reply text box which wonder of wonders includes an option that is already checked that promises LYINGLY to "Automatically parse links in text" and I believe that should mean that any URL pasted in should automatically get presented (i.e. "parsed") as a clickable hyperlink in the standard orange coloration not the hard to read blue

that will be used unless you go to the trouble of utilising the obviously incompetent "insert link" feature (the small blue globe plus a chain link icon on the toolbar)
