I looked for a thread that pertained to this, but only found one worthy of small talk.

Does anyone else love this song? I ALWAYS skipped this one when in skipping range, lol. I have all the albums on an ipod in my new car (thanks to my son) and guess I recently gave it a chance once or twice. The music isn't catchy or anything, but I love the message - the hurt really comes through. I looked it up on the home page, and the words read like poetry. I love when I discover a new song when I thought all were discovered!

Lisa if you go to the newsgroup alt.music.lightfoot on Google and search the group for
mentions of If There's A Reason you will find a number of postings including a thread on the Endless Wire album in general at:-
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.music.lightfoot/browse_thread/thread/b1b22884ef75b031/f51f65d6a694a0cb?hl=en&lnk=gst&q=if+there%27s+a+reason#f51f65d6a694a0cb (http://groups.google.com/group/alt.music.lightfoot/browse_thread/thread/b1b22884ef75b031/f51f65d6a694a0cb?hl=en&lnk=gst&q=if+there%27s+a+reason#f51f65d6a694a0cb)

That was in the days when the newsgroup's creator Wayne Francis (of lightfoot.ca fame)still regularly posted and he confided:-
"Highlights of the album for me are If Children Had Wings, one of his most
intensely personal and heart-wrenching songs ever, and If There's A Reason,
which is a "very" inspired vocal as far as I'm concerned."
Another post in that same thread said
"One song that did grow on me, though, was If There's
a Reason. I didn't care for it for years, now it's one my absolute Endless Wire
favorites."
I echo your obervation it was not until Gord rerotated If Children Had Wings that I "discovered" that song

Thanks, John for the link. I'm glad I'm not the only one who took a while to appreciate this song. Can't believe I've been skipping it all these years! I always loved Dreamland the best on Endless Wire...now it has some competition.

Hope to see you in May...

Lisa

I've always liked this song because Gord "played" around with his voice a bit. He changed his cadence and timing a bit to offer an almost "blues" type of sound. If you're scratching your head and saying "what the hell is he talking about", then I can't help you. But I heard it as a stretch, and I appreciated it.

I think it has a 'bluesy' sound too. Totally cool and fits the melancholy mood of the song.

It's one of my favorites from Endless Wire - the other is The Circle is Small. Bought the album in 1978 when it came out...
