GORDON LIGHTFOOT ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF MASSEY HALL MOMENTS – ALL LIVE

Album to be released Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Fans can pre-order for pre-street-date delivery when ordering tickets for 2012 Massey Hall shows

Warner Music Canada is proud to be able to announce the Tuesday, April 17, 2012 release date of the Gordon Lightfoot album Massey Hall Moments – All Live. The album is currently available for pre-order at www.gordonlightfoot.ca and will be available at all physical music retailer as well as Digital Service Providers.

It is the musical highlight of every calendar year when Canadian Music legend, Gordon Lightfoot announces his run of concert dates at Toronto’s storied Massey Hall. Last May 25th, 2011 marked Gordon’s 150th concert at the hallowed hall in the past 40 years. In 1978 he played a remarkable 10 shows in 9 days, selling out each and every night. Now, for the first time ever, Gordon has gone through the archives of live recordings from Massey Hall and has picked the finest performances recorded between 1998 – 2001. “The recordings have not been technically altered and are authentic live mixes,” says Lightfoot of the album. Fans will hear each song exactly as it was performed that night – no over dubs, no mixing – ALL LIVE.

“Gordon Lightfoot has performed at Massey Hall more than any other individual artist in the Halls 117 year history. The contribution that Mr. Lightfoot has made to Toronto is immense and it’s only fitting that he would share some of these moments with the rest of the world with the release of Massey Hall Moments – All Live. Great halls need great performances from the greatest performers. Gordon Lightfoot is part of the Massey Hall legacy and we’re proud to welcome him back year after year. We always look forward to it. Welcome home Gordon!” - Charles S. Cutts, President and CEO of The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall

Concurrent to the album release announcement, Gordon Lightfoot is announcing the onsale of tickets for his 2012 run at Massey Hall, November 14, 14, 16 and 17, 2012. Tickets for the 2012 Massey Hall dates go on sale Friday, March 2, 2012 at 10:00am. Fans buying tickets through the Roy Thomson Hall box office (416-872-4255) or www.masseyhall.com will also have the option of adding the new album to their purchase. Massey Hall Moments – All Live will be delivered to these ticket holders on or before the Friday prior to street date.

How could one possibly describe in one paragraph the impact Gordon Lightfoot and his music has had on Canadian culture. Just a line list of some of his songs paints a vivid portrait of our nation; “Early Morning Rain,” “Canadian Railroad Trilogy,” “The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald,” “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Carefree Highway” and “Summer Side Of Life” are only a small sampling. On Thursday, June 14, 2012, Gordon Lightfoot legacy will be further enhanced when he will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in New York City in the performer category alongside Bob Seger, Don Schlitz, Harvey Schmidt, Tom Jones and Jim Steinman.

Gordon Lightfoot has won 15 Juno Awards and been nominated for 5 Grammy Awards. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Canadian Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2001. In May 2003 was made a Companion of the Order of Canada and is also a member of the Order of Ontario, and in 2004 was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Oh well I guess it was too much to hope for something.. anything new, but with all due respect for Gord's quest for perfection I do feel that it was a golden opportunity to present the Pokemon song (Night-Time), especially since it was on the setlists on two of the three concerts in 2001 (the 24th and 26th) and other songs from both nights ARE on the CD At least it contains 19 tracks (I haven't yet totalled the running time as per the studio recordings but I would anticipate that with a modicum of audience applause it may well be a fairly full 80 minutes worth.
I must press on and finish my own listing of 'Extra Rare" items. so that for consolation those who have a mind to could burn their own "new songs" CD (it might well have to be a double CD anyway)

Char: Thanks for posting the song list of the new album. I am always thrilled to enjoy a new album- especially one that is pure Massey, just like it sounded.

Some really great songs were left off: Don Quixote, Minstrel of the Dawn, In My Fashion, Triangle, etc. Maybe they will appear on the DVD someday of the Massey 2011 concerts that were filmed.

That being said, I am slightly disappointed that there were not one or two rarrieties included. I could have done without another example of Ring Neck Loon, Blackberry Wine and 14 Karat Gold. Think the more rare, "Sit Down Young Stranger" , "That Same Old Obsession" and "I'd Do Anything" would have been more juicy to await.

But Gord knows best. He chose a representative mix of a typical concert for us to enjoy forever. Thanks Gord and I can't wait for April 17 !!

I'm looking forward to this. I've never heard a live version of "Ringneck Loon". I'm glad the CD includes something ("Let It Ride") from my favourite Lightfoot album "East of Midnight". But I'm surprised the two long blockbusters ("Wreck" and "Trilogy") appear back-to-back.

While I will certainly buy and listen to the cd I can't resist saying how disappointed I am with the track list.

This was an opportunity to feature some classic songs that are not performed nearly enough. I for one would gladly do without Blackberry Wine and Baby Step Back in favour of Ode to Big Blue or Sit Down Young Stranger which were performed at the source concerts.

Very disappointing.

As someone who never has (and sadly never will in all likelihood) seen Gord live I'm thrilled with this release. Of course it had to have the big songs on it to have the widest appeal and the lesser known tracks all rank high amongst my favourites (plus there are a couple on there that I don't know, yes I'm a bad fan for having a few gaps in my collection!)

Sorry, but BORING! Yeah, I'll buy it but I am real disappointed however, not surprised.

Yeah, I gotta agree with some of the posts...wishing this was fleshed out to say 24 tracks to add on DQ, Minstrel of the Dawn, and a few others. But hey, if it does well, maybe a second edition! Or like someone ventured...a DVD.

Not likely I'll ever get to see him in Massey, so that would be very nice.

Wow! This is exciting news and coming at a time of the year when we need a sort of "pick me up" to help get through the last days of winter.

The posting of this years Massey Hall concerts in November is a big highlight as we can now get rolling on plans to connect with all the folks who come into town from all over and try and show everyone a good time.

And as usual we will try and arrange a pub jam once again at McVeigh's for the Friday afternoon.

It's never too late to start the ball rolling.

The song list for the Massey Hall Moments album is raising controversy as can be seen here and yes, we all have our "wished for songs" that didn't make it but it will be interesting to take the time and sit down and really have a good listen once the album is in our hands.

Looking forward to good times ahead.

RJ.

Dissappointed that 'Night Time' is not on the list. I know it's posted elsewhere on Corfid.

Was lucky enough to be at the May 26, 2001 show with all my family, so we do have the recording of 'The No Hotel' from that night we were there on the 'Harmony' album.

Now we will have 'Christian Island' (short version) and 'Let It Ride' from that night also!!!!!!

Pretty cool all around. We really can't be mad at Gord, it's his music and property and probably his decisions.

Interestingly tight window for the selections don't you think? When it was first mentioned I was thinking it might showcase one track every few years to give a sense of the total package. That's why I don't bet. Well as the kids say "it is what it is" and of course I'll buy it and play it 5 or 6 times, put it on my iPod, and then see how often it comes around in rotation.

wow, i wasnt expecting much but this is even less than what i expected

starting the the cd cover...seems like Gord should be positioned lower and give more headroom

i guess it's subjective but i think that's an awful clash of fonts...and font for Lightfoot is just atrocious ... it's the type you would see on a hoaky country artist's LP cover

i will bet the sound is crisp...the greatest thing is that, unlike at Massey, WE can TURN UP THE VOLUME is we want to!!!!

i would say the live version of Shellfish on the Harmony album is more intriguing than this entire 19 song compilation found here

i'll be post-ordering my copy

Bill
03-03-2012, 10:59 AM
Yeah, the photo is very contrasty and the fonts/placent weird. Not what I would have done, but it isn't my place to critisize either.

It seems they've done an homage to the "Did She Memtion My Name?" cover from the 60s.

charlene
03-03-2012, 11:11 AM
I think a shot of MASSEY HALL could have been included on the cover.. the meeting of two legendary icons over so many years should have been acknowledged.

Gordon called me the other day and we spoke about the video footage shot @ Massey last May and the word from him is there will be no release of any of that footage.

So this CD of LIVE audio recorded @ Massey from a small window of time is what we're getting.

jj

Yes Bill. Good hunch. DSMMN. (my least fave album cover other than the Gord pic)

I wasn't intentionally flaming the thing, just airing out some disappointment. We lightfoot fans wait a hell of a long time between albums (or any sort of release) this past 25 years!!!

For folks wanting "I'll Do Anything" remember there is a great live version from the MMM live show and he even includes the bridge ( not on the studio version)

Char, that awesome that he called you for a wee chat and update. Next time ask him about Letterman! This new Cd is a good excuse to get on the USA tv promo circuit. How about Charlie Rose. Piers Morgan. Kelly Rippa. Lol

folks could list what 5 songs they are looking forward to most???

i can think of 4 that jump out, that i was at Massey for and would like to hear:

Christian Island (Gord able to sing over the band, and Terry in the spotlight)

Fine as Fine Can Be (where Mike uses warm strings sound instead of e-piano)

Restless (i never grow tired of hearing Barry doing his signature percussion work)

Let It Ride (the closing high end bass work that Rick does is always a treat)

charlene
03-04-2012, 10:22 AM
yeah - Restless and CI would have been nice. Some songs may not have been included due to 'bad' recordings/sound/voice issues but were on 'the list' to start.....

Had I my wits about me when he called I could have asked him why some songs and not others..lol

jj

Wait. Don't tell me I'm seeing things. They are on it, right?

Wow. Ring neck loon.

When I saw that live it seemed to go on about twice as long as the Wreck

Many of these are already on Reno live. Is the audio that much different? Same era. Same man on the mix.

I hope it sounds warm like Massey and not digital like APPT.

Looking forward to seeing the inners of the cd jacket. If there's no pic of Massey then this time YOU call Gord, char!!!! Lol

Looking forward to it.

As an instrumentalist, "live" recordings are always good to catch technique bits, guitar or vocal, with no studio "enhancements." Sitting around the living room with my 3 guitars and a guitar playing friend that enjoys playing lead, live recordings can be great to listen to. Its fun to be able to catch that little something that you can use, or adapt, to blend your guitar sounds better.

The lyric change came after this recording but I agree. It's not ironic. It's dumb. Why not lift the audio from last years DVD recording.

Anyone liking these mixes? Can't hear any jingle jangle of guitars. Gord vocal is certainly up in the mix. And we are in control of the Massey volume!;)

I, too, find it strange that the album title has changed from "Massey Moments: All Live" to just "All Live". I would have assumed something non-Massey had been added, but Char has said that is not the case. To me, the title "All Live" is very vague and unoriginal. Surely it could at least have been "Live in Toronto" or even "Live in Canada".

Seems like fairly normal marketing Dave. Just like I will avoid anything with the mention of Pittsburgh on it I would think they were trying to make the appeal more universal, if you will allow. Just my opinion but I'm almost always right, LOL. (jk)

On a happy note when I ran home at lunch time my copy was waiting for me. I played the first minute, sounded great so far. But I was puzzled by the sticker on the outide touting the fact that all the selections were from "1998 - 2001" like that was a big plus. Oh well - I'm looking forward to playing it tonight and getting it on the iPod.

Amazon.com never updated the release date from 4/17, so they started shipping last Friday (for those ordered for day of release delivery/2 day), and have continued to ship the rest. I suspect that all pre-orders from Amazon.com are on their way or at their destination.

Mine arrived from Amazon.com today! Just brought it in from the mailbox, so I have not even ripped off the shrink wrap yet. I love anything new from Gord...even if it is old stuff, so I am pretty sure I will be very happy with this.

I am driving down to Austin on Friday for the Johnny Cash tribute, so I probably won't really get to listen to it until then, but I am really happy it showed up today!

Got mine from Amazon on the 17th.

On the whole I believe the mix is fine. As I said before, a live mix is nice to pick up on a few technique bits. I'm always interested how Gord can vary his 12 string play from a quiet rhythum to a good "12 string ring." It is harder than it sounds.

I would have liked a bit more audience interaction/chatter to go with the "live" recordings and, of course, you've got the shortened songs with some stanzas cut.

Welcome Suze!

Just heard about the new live disc from Lightfoot a couple of days ago. I was hoping that if a live album came out, it would contain some tracks from the late 70's thru mid 80's. However, I certainly don't want to second guess GL's judgement on what should come out. I listened to some audio samples and it sounded really good and I also like the fact that Lightfoot decided to make it a "real" live album and forgo overdubs and remixing. The song selection is excellent as well. I just ordered the DVD, Live In Reno, and I'm looking forward to playing it hooked up to my Bose music system which produces phenomenal sound from my concert DVD's.

Got mine yesterday in the mail from Rhino. Haven't yet had a chance to listen all the way through but listened to a good portion of it. I'm enjoying it. Unlike the studio recordings, I can see them on stage when I listen to these songs. I can see Gord step back in parts of songs, looking at Terry & those little smiles they'd share :) Am I the only one who does that? It's just nice to have something "new". Along with all the videos & everything that goes with it, I'll enjoy it. And thanks Char for all your hard work in compiling everything during his media blitz.

Well, it finally arrived today, and it was certainly worth the wait. I know there has been discussion and some dismay about the track list. I sorta understood where everyone was coming from on that, wishing for some less-frequently-performed gems. But I have to say, the quality of this recording and the clarity of Gord's voice is absolutely stunning. I haven't listened all the way through yet, but will this evening.
Jimmy, I'll post my top 5 as soon as I listen to them all!

What an awesome job Gord has done with this. Bravo!
Makes me even that more anxious for November.......

Cheers,
Melissa

I'm having a hard tme picking the top 5 !!
Understanding how this record/cd came about in regards to 'sound' fascinates me. The determination of Lightfoot to make it just like it was heard by those of us at those concerts is commendable. Having the control to make sure that is how it was to be released and not wait for someone else to possibly 'fix' things 'later' played a huge part in why it's out now.
Apparently he has rid himself of all other recordings so the hopes of a CD of 70's and one of 80's songs recorded LIVE @ Massey is gone.
The video footage from last May @ Massey will not be a DVD...
This ALL LIVE cd from 1998-2001 may be all we get... :(
Should we start the Massey countdown now??
lol

Yeee-haw! I am pre-ordered for All Live!
Sports? Well, our Cleveland Indians are #1 in the American League Central (10-8)(subject to change!), but they are just now (3:20 PM) starting a 1:00 PM game because of rain and sleet! We had some sleet here, too! Ugh!
Cincinnati, our other Ohio team, is #2 in the National League Central.

i got my cd yesterday and immediately made a copy for my car and one for the house. I have been listening to it since 8 this morning, almost non stop. it has been amazing to hear that beautiful voice live, but it has been melt your heart, sigh worthy to hear that incredible guitar of Terry's. I can't help myself, I am not satisfied with just one live album. We need a follow up cd to include Beautifu and if children had wings... Please?

Finally got to listen to the entire CD today. I think the quality is exceptional.
My top 5 would have to be:
IYCRMM
Christian Island
CRT
Let it Ride
SFAWN

I think this may be the best recording of IYCRMM that I've ever heard. It is beautiful.
In most cases, I don't get a lot of the clarity when I listen to CD's in my car. But this one is an exception. It sounds amazing in the car. I can only imagine what it's going to sound like when I pull out the really good headphones tonight and listen in a quiet room.
I also have to say that EMR was amazing, too, and probably should be tied with SFAWN on my list. I especially like that he was still singing "can" instead of "might" back then. I always liked "can" better and wish he hadn't changed it.

Yes, this CD is a pleasant surprise and I'll be listening to it a lot. I hope it sells about 5 million copies. :)

I am now on my third time through, and my top five are:

SFAWN - One of my favorites anyway, and this one gave me chills. I would gladly have bought the CD just for this song.

IYCRMM - The band is flawless, better even than the original recording.

Early Morning Rain

CRT

Let It Ride

Has anyone else noticed that the vocal level seems to fluctuate somewhat? I feel like I really have to crank the volume on a few songs - not that there's anything wrong with that :)

I got my copy this week, but still haven't listened all the way through yet. Knowing that there is a very good chance this will be my last new GL cd, I wanted to savor it. I've been waiting to pour a glass of wine, and be alone in a quiet room to enjoy.
I didn't want to have my first time be in a car........:p

I agree with your list, but I would add Christian Island. Guitar on that is incredible, especially in the car with the sound cranked up!
And I can't wait to see him in 12 days!

Char, your restraint is admirable and much appreciated :)

Personally, I am having a wonderful time in the car with Gord...I am driving the Jetta that used to belong to my son Andrew, and he made some, um, modifications to the sound system :headbang:

I imagine those "modifications" make the sound of this cd even more spectacular... so jealous! haha

Love to be in agreement!

12 days? Hmmm...I am so jealous! We know you will have a wonderful time even though most of the rest of us won't be there ;) We will be thinking of ya.

Very strange
I have just found a Walmart page

offering the new CD for only $10.88 (free delivery to a store but both the picture that illustrates it and the title of the listing are and I quote:-
"Massey Hall Moments: All Live"
And here is a screenshot as uploaded to my new dropbox account

Perhaps all the previously-printed CD artwork (that was subsequently revised) didn't get tossed out after all.......it just got shipped to Wal-Mart! It almost makes it a collector's item. I think I might order one of the Wal-Mart ones as a spare!
(Reminds me of the Sit Down Young Stranger album being re-named to........uh, what was the name of that album? Can't remember.......some obscure Lightfoot tune........)
:)

I have now had the chance to evaluate this welcome addition to the roster of official Lightfoot albums and in general I agree with the positive opinions already made here,
I was extremely pleased that the two songs that frequently appear on setlists up to and including last Thursday on Long Island. Restless and Let It Ride. are included.
(I never tire of hearing Gord carefully navigate through what must be the confusion his lyrics must cause him on Restless (iron- or over- cast or clad which is the correct pairing this time!?)
I have previously bemoaned the decision Gord made when handpicking suitable recordings not to include the third 2000/2001 unreleased but often played song Nighttime.
I thought that hitherto his Magic number was 20 yet there are only 19 tracks, Moreover the Total Running Time is only about 69 minutes leaving plenty of room on a standard 80 minute blank CD to include that song plus a few other omissions if you want to go to the trouble of compiling and burning an "All Live Plus" alternative for your own use.
If you have access to other recordings of the 1998/1999/2001 concerts you might choose for example:-
Forgive Me Lord,Beautiful, Same Old Obsession also from 11/11/99, or perhaps Never Too Close from the followimg night. or from 2001:-
Triangle or Minstrel Of The Dawn from the May 25th concert
Nightime or Sit Down Young Stranger from May 26th
I played my copy on a DVD player though the television monitor and the on screen display claimed that the disc's title was "Massey Hall Momemnts All Live, oh well.
My final comment is that although some tracks include the closing audience applause and Gord saying "'Thank You" it makes me appreciate even more the better bootlegs because usually the creator takes a single continuous recording and splits it into indivudual tracks but they retain all of the intersong applause and banter, therefore the resultant CD can be burnt with no gaps between tracks to simulate the continuous live concert experience, complete with Gord's groaners, band intoductions etc
OK that's my preference but I do know of fans who prefer a clean cut with no extraneous noise.

Got this 'Live' CD from Amazon today and am really looking forward to hearing it after all the nice comments posted here!
I've also got the old concert DVD, 'Live In Reno' (with okay sound, but absolutely horrid video quality), so something better live is nice. I really wish Gord would re-release the 'Live in Reno' on Blu-ray with remastered (Hi Def Lossless) audio & 1080p video, but alas...
Okay! - onto the CD listening sessions!
