Thx for this , char. This thread needs to get some play. This is really the pinnacle other than order of Canada. As for R&R hall of fame, secondary IMO. How much of that genre has he even written?

Some stiff competition, redhead, but you're right. Although he was quite the singer, consider him the perfect songwriter inductee (besides if Phil Collins and Susssidio are in there, Gord and Couchiching certainly belong, lol)

I like reading the nonperformer names and contributions. The hidden talent :)

I'm surprised that under Jim Steinam they don't include bat out of hell or you took the words right out of my mouth (it must have been while you were kissing me)

Great news.

can't think of anyone who deserves this honor more.

i don't know what the criteria is but as far as Canadians, i see Anka and Joni and Leonard...no Neil

http://songwritershalloffame.org/exhibits/era

i hear Swift got an award of some sort at last year's gala...is Beib on deck? lol

there's no actual museum... same with Canada's version... should be, imo

charlene

love that lyric - always makes me chuckle.."you took the words right out of my mouth..musta been while you were kissing me".
he's a terrific writer-clever stuff in all of his tunes..

jj
11-01-2011, 01:03 PM
right on, that lyric and the hook jumped up off the LP (once i made it thru the first 50 seconds, lol) long before it hit the airwaves and over-saturated my ears... but ya, simple + clever = enduring

i certainly prefer the hook played on piano

Jim Steinman talks about 'You Took the Words...' - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5KZ8QRPqB8&feature=related)

can we get Gord to sit with piano and/or guitar and divulge in similar fashion? naw

ya ask him about songwriting and he gives ya the price of tea in the Yukon :(

It's always remarkable to hear guys like this talk about how they hear things and turn them into music/lyrics..quite amazing to a person like me who can barely create a ryhming couplet..or carry a tune in a bucket..

I noticed on the explanation on top, that near the end is this part " (*Note that the five songs listed after each nominee are merely a representative sample of their extensive catalogs) " So this explains why just some songs are listed. I think in the Non Performers that the best odds are for Tony Hatch, Jim Steinman, or Pf Sloan & partner. In the Performers cat., Gordon, Cat Stevens, Pete Townshend. I hope some one remembers to post the winner here in June. I likely will forget all about it by then. I sure hope Gordon wins, we know he well deserves it.

jj

interesting predictions, john

for a songwriters hall of fame i don't know why they even bother distinguishing before performer and non-performer categories

seems like a grey area also for some (eg. Steinman performed but as a sideman, but of course he didn't sing the vocals for the lyrics he wrote)

David Foster writes but also 'performs'...Carole King used to be non-performer

the Canuck version of the hall, inducts Songs also or instead of....so you could have a Song in there but not the writer

kind of like the Hockey Hall of Fame where Paul Henderson's 1972 goal against USSR in inducted but not he himself

and maybe Pete Rose's 4192 should be inducted to Cooperstown, and continue to keep him out... am i off topic yet? lol

charlene
11-02-2011, 09:44 AM
re:Henderson - the '72 goal should be in the hall..
as for PH himself - that's all he really did in his career to warrant 'him' being in the HHOF.
He was a good hockey player..not great IMHO.

yes, they are wrong in saying he hasn't had an album since 1994 and wrong in saying it's a "new" 2012 album....but sure, it's a "new" release....and if Nightime is on there then that counts as new material:)

I'm thrilled for Gord and also for Bob Seger. Disappointed that Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam was overlooked and I hope it had nothing to do with religious "politics". I'm not surprised that Van Morrison and James Taylor were already inducted. And I imagine Jackson Browne and Don McLean would be considered too.

Just another short mention of this wonderful announcement

http://www.toronto.com/article/714506

Feb 22, 2012

NEW YORK, N.Y.—Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot is being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The 73-year-old troubadour will be feted at an awards dinner in New York on June 14.

Lightfoot joins Bob Seger, Don Schlitz, Harvey Schmidt & Tom Jones and Jim Steinman as the newest members of the select group.

The Orillia, Ont.-born singer is credited with helping define the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and 1970s.

His hits include “Early Morning Rain,” “Sundown,” “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Carefree Highway” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

Hall of fame chairman Jimmy Webb says each of this year’s inductees “has created a unique range of extraordinary contributions.”

The videos in Char's last post included a grab of Jackson Browne around the time of his induction in 2007. And the SHOF website shows that Don McLean has also been inducted. It would be interesting to see the whole list of 400-odd inductees.

New York, N.Y. —

Bette Midler’s voice has helped make songs like “Wind Beneath My Wings” classics, and now she’ll be honored for that gift.

Midler is set to receive the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award at the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 14 in New York. The organization’s chairman, Jimmy Webb, says Midler “captivated the world” with her “stylish presentation and unmistakable voice, making each song her own.”

Past Sammy Cahn honorees include Dick Clark, Neil Diamond and Tony Bennett.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame is inducting Bob Seeger, Gordon Lightfoot, Don Schlitz, Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones, and Jim Steinman this year.

It seems a tad weird he's not been given that honour already. Kris Kristofferson (sp?) isn't as relevant anymore as Gord is now. Nothing against KK - love some of his stuff, but really.

charlene
03-17-2012, 06:08 PM
KK is still writing and putting out CD's - 2 or 3 in the last several years and another in the works. He performs all over on tour and is being feted by all kinds of music associations. He's also involved in lots of causes and performs with all kinds of performers for them. He's also on the 2010 Willie Nelson album and the new one coming in May. He's also still acting in movies.
In april there will be a celebration of Johnny Cash's 80th with many terrific artists...Wish I could go! - The one-time event--taking place April 20 at Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater in Austin, TX--will celebrate the life and legacy of Johnny Cash in honor of what would have been his 80th birthday this year. Others confirmed to perform include Kenny Chesney, Kris Kristofferson, Ronnie Dunn, John Hiatt, Amy Lee, Shooter Jennings, Lucinda Williams, Ray LaMontagne and Jamey Johnson with more legendary surprise guests to be announced soon. Kris will be 76 on June 22 ... and still relevant.
;)

Judy
03-17-2012, 11:41 PM
I have tickets to this - "We walk the Line" - along with a three or four hour drive to Austin. Can't wait!

KK and Lightfoot are both still very relevant, but I agree the US SHOF was a little late on bestowing the honor to Lightfoot. Happily, that is fixed now.

Char, that latest link says Meat Loaf has been signed on as a "presenter and/or performer". He's obviously intended as the presenter for Jim Steinman's songwriting award. Judging by his woeful singing at the Australian Grand Final last September, they'd be taking a risk having him perform at a prestigious, high-profile event which is presumably televised live.

well, i hope it's not Stevie... umm, Kenny blew off "Never Say Trust Me" ;)

to my knowledge (thanks to google and the lightfoot site) none of them have cited him as an influence or covered one of his songs, on record anyhow

but i would think Gord would be flattered to have ELH do the honours

i can think of a hundred more interesting compositions than Sundown to have someone perform but i suppose it's a recognizable american classic, so no complaints:)

congratulations Gordon, long overdue

ok, steve miller > Lightfoot ...what's the connection???

Miller was nominated last year, but didn't make the cut ?

Curious myself.....perhaps, it's because they both reached the peak of their careers in the '70s and were aware of each other. A wiki search states that Miller's "Fly Like An Eagle" reached No. 1 on "cash box top 100" in November of 1976. A week later, it was replaced by "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald".

Just speculating.....

It was videotaped but unlikely we'll see anything more than snippets at the website. Cameras etc. were forbidden in the hall during the evening.

An earlier post by jj said "I think Seger looks more like Kenny Rogers than Kenny does." I couldn't agree more! Kenny must have used the same plastic surgeon as Paul Hogan.

In 2012 when I was Chairman of the Board of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, I was privileged to preside over the induction of one of my longtime favorite singers and songwriters, Gordon Lightfoot. Those of you who know me well know that I can be as starstruck as the next fellow when the occasion arises, and I was zoned out to be standing next to Gordon Lightfoot pre-show. When the photographers were firing away. I kept looking at him to make sure he was really there. He responded with a convivial Canadian grin, and honestly, he seemed like someone I had known all my life.
Upon reflection, it is apparent that I had known him all my life through his music and his commanding, ever-so-slightly sandpapered vocals. His voice conveyed immediately the impression of a strong and hip rambler of the roads. In fact, the last I saw of him that night, he was walking around on the stage packing up his own gear and laughing with his crew as they stuffed the truck and boarded the bus for the next one-nighter. It’s a life I have lived myself and I have a special attachment to the real troubadours who, in effect, devote their entire lives to performing in places like Butte, Montana, Santa Fe, New Mexico and all roads and venues in between.
I went over to say goodbye to him, and he laughed as I praised my favorite Sundown, and there was just a twinge of sadness when he and the band finally walked out. I only met him once but I was deeply impressed with him, and I have the feeling that if you tapped him with a silver hammer his note would ring true like a giant anvil. I fancy that I can read people, but I think any person who came in contact with Gordon Lightfoot must have realized that he was the real deal. He lived what he sang and he sang what he lived.
What are we going to do without all these golden personas who are leaving us in droves? As I said when I wrote about Charles Watts, “who banged the drums slowly and played the pipes lowly,” another inestimably great artist and authentic figure has left the building.
Love to all,
Jimmy
