John Fowles's recent post re his early difficulty in tracking down video footage of Gord reminded me of when I first saw him on video. It was in the 1980s on the US TV music series "Solid Gold". They had a looking-back segment with Gord invited in to perform his mid-1970s hit "Sundown". (I don't know if it's already been discussed on this website.) No spoken words from Gord. Just current-day video of him "performing" the song in the studio, but the sound was the original album recording. I still have my recording of that segment on VHS. (And the only other Gord music video I've seen, apart from on the internet, is the store-bought Reno concert from 2000.)

My old grad school professor, Bob Banner, was the creator and producer of Solid Gold...he said they lip synced everything.

I have that Solid Gold performance of Sundown on VHS tape. Must have taped it in about 1983 or 84. Tape still works. Yes, Sundown was lip-synced.

At the end of the program, Gord does a duet with Marilyn McCoo of "If You Could Read My Mind." That definitely was not lip synced.

I should find a way to get it onto DVD... but now that technology is old hat.

The tape then immediately cuts off and an old Star Trek episode, "The Doomsday Machine" starts. I don't know what I was thinking at the time. During those years, taping from TV was high-tech and VHS recorders cost real money.
