Interesting! So are any Lightfoot pieces among the "pre-selected iconic Canadian songs" involved in this competition? A good outlet for the Massey Pub Jam artists, what do you say?

Yikes! Shouldn't you at least be able to recognize the melody?
Just asking. No offense intended.
Cathy

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! I never thought I'd hear a metal version of Sundown! That's absolutely awful!!!!!!!!!!! At least the second video doesn't hurt my ears, but I can't say that I LIKE it. I suppose we should feel honored that the new generation of musicians is keeping Gord's songs alive.
You know, that's what music is all about... adapting songs to fit the musical style of generations . Our generation was more about acoustic guitars, folk, light rock. The new generation seems to be more about noise, absurdities, changes.
What's up with that pink frilled housecoat? Now, that was absurd.
Cathy
A show competition where people see who can do the "best" covers?
Ctv had something called Canadian Idol.
How about a show where new or unknown (to the masses) indy Canadian talent performs new original songs??? Either their own compositions or those from budding songwriters looking for artists and a platform to launch them.
But I suppose Mother CBC knows best, or maybe she doesn't (seeing as nobody watches it, lol)
...IMO, Strombo's show should conclude with a live canadian artist performance. QTV occasionally hits the mark
Might as well link this to the Covers forum too:)
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! I never thought I'd hear a metal version

At least Claw Hammer's version has the same melody. You can tell they're singing Sundown. It's definitely a rock 'n' roll version, but no where near as bad as the Cover Me Canada Audition. Would I be tempted to buy it? NO.
Cathy
I think the metal one got deleted just as I decided to check it out
I don't see the connection to Gord's composition other than lyrics, when I checked out the other two posted here. I guess there is a fine line between being creative and being annoying.... Hope they all have fun regardless cos I know Gord will have fun strolling to the bank
One day left to get your versions in!
Here's another painful rendition ...

Hi,
can anyone help, i want to go see the great man, the nearest place seems to be new York, when trying to book they want us to pay for 4 tickets maybe 6 to book a booth to guarantee the seats.
We are flying from heathrow just to see him, no other reason, well tying it in with the 25th wedding anniversary, so it it costing enough anyway but he does not come to UK, i have a serious illness, short of breath, so want to do it this year as maybe too ill next year who knows.
chose new york as it is a thousand miles nearer than Canada, however, whats a few miles.
is there anywhere, where we would not get ripped off to guarantee seats, even if it is Canada, i have to do it this year and to travel that distance and not have the evening guaranteed, well.
What about massy hall, can you have dinner there or is there somewhere to eat afterwards etc, any help would be very much appreciated, want to make it a good night for my wife.
Thanks

HI,
there are no planned Massey Hall dates until November 2012.
Sept.12- New York City would seem like a good choice - I'm sure there are plenty of places to eat, probably at the B.B.King's Blues Club itself. I don't know how far it is from the airport you'd land at tho.
There are first come/first serve/seat tix and booth seats but those are purchased only if you want the whole booth of 4 or 6 seats...

Hi Charlene, thanks for this but it was BB Kings who wanted us to book the 4-6 seats to guarantee it,you can appreciate don't want to go there all that distance nearly 4,000 miles on a first come basis, and to have to pay for 6 people a bit of a rip off when you only want two.
Thanks anyway, what about massy hall in November what is that like, cold i guess, are there plenty of places near there to eat afterwards.

2012 a long way off, will have to think about this one, thought he was at Massey Hall this November, shame, would have liked to see Toronto as well, could be doomed not to see him.
Will have to look at dates and venues again.
Heh, thanks for your help anyway, appreciate it.

This is the only one that caught my ear as being "quite good". Different yes, but worthy of mention. These guys are really having fun.
Now for a disclaimer: I have no musical talent or knowledge whatsoever. I sound like an alley cat with asthma, and I wouldn't recognize a melody if it ran over me. Basically, I like what I like because I like it, and I can offer no other explanation.
Yeah, there's some truly horrible stuff in the cover me sessions, and these folks are a lot braver than me to ever post something, but at least they have actually HEARD of Gordon Lightfoot!
As a side note, my 12 year old has recently discovered the classic rock songs, and we are delighted in this wonderful change in his musical taste. His previous "taste" was contemporary radio. Oh God, the pain of it all...
Now, if I can get him to listen to Gordon Lightfoot and Al Stewart, I'll really be pleased. :)

nice work, TG....you are always best dressed at McVeigh's and also at youtube!
yeah, those shades are quite nasty:cool:
after sifting through lots of stuff that i thought was over self-indulgent, i think i found a nice bit of instrumental and vocal arranging (ie. "mistake") with just the right amount of poetic license and deviation from the original taken (ie. the minor chord instead of major works for me in the verses)

Hey, they're pretty good! The intro sounds like 'Mama Told Me Not to Come' though.
Cathy
came across more solo artist studio productions, some slick, but in re-reading the gist of the premise i guess they want live band stuff
i like the video intro here and the handheld work...i guess my only knock is i don't fancy instrumental solos that are more of less the melody leads...i suppose that's why the signature solo on the GL recording resonates with me and a few million others
‪CBC Cover Me Canada - The Speakeasies perform "Sundown" by Gordon Lightfoot‬‏ - YouTube
they should just make a youtube channel for each of the 4 songs so we can just put one link to the Sundown covers...if nothing else, i'm glad this is boosting Gord popularity with the young'ns and middleaged'ns

JJ, that has to be to worse Sundown solo I've ever heard! I'm not convinced the soloist has a clue how to play guitar. It just sounds like a bunch of random notes.
I've come to the conclusion that there is NOBODY who can play the lead part to Sundown like Terry could. And come to think of it, there is no one who can sing it as well as Gord did.
Cathy

Cathy
Yeah but I've heard worse, right in my own dwelling lol
the lead break does sound like a non-solo eh. my mild rant was actually honed in on the lead out. not sure why he wouldn't do some grundge derivative of the classic TC licks. anyhow I like the vid and The Hip flavour the rendition has
I'm kinda glad this contest chooses to mess with Sundown rather than a slew of GL classics that are in my "look but don't touch" list:)

You're so right there. That solo is one tough cookie to crack smoothly. And someone said Sundown is a song that is uncoverable. I tend to agree; have yet to hear one version that really grabs me. Should make for an interesting task for the judges.
true enuf, cathy

i forget the criteria for this but melanie is already a break through artist (ecma, cmt, etc exposure) ... not sure if she's got enough goods to differentiate her from a saturation of young nashville gals already on the scene, but terrific command of her vocals
perhaps it's for those indy's yet to be signed to major labels
anyhow, i havent see the show but in sifting through the website media, nothing much tickled my fancy... perhaps the ratings are enough to freeze my tax dollar(s)
