Now that he's over 70, his frame and voice a good deal frailer than they were in his prime, it's easy to forget that for decades Canadian folk legend Gordon Lightfoot defined what it meant to be a man. He was handsomely hirsute, wore a lot of denim, drank dark-hued booze, chased hot skirt, lived in the wilds of Ontario, chopped his own wood, killed wild boar with his bare hands, fished with a spear, raced a team of sled dogs, arm-wrestled competitively, wore Skin Bracer aftershave, and built his own forested cabin from log and rock, like that old guy on PBS. Even if he didn't do all that (and we have no proof he didn't), he still wrote "Sundown," "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," "Carefree Highway," and "If You Could Read My Mind." Speaking of manly-man things........I was checking out Google Books, and found one about canoeing. This link to it has a brief story about Lightfoot's canoe becoming swamped in boulders, and the recovery of it. A couple of pics with Lightfoot too :

lesson learned..
always carry a block and tackle and pulleys when canoeing. (perhaps even at all times)

wow - that guy could have been my grandfather in the early 40's building the cabin on Gibson Lake near Timmins when he wasn't working in the gold mine. I've often tried to visualize how hard he worked.

51 years old......amazing. Lots of skills and desire needed, plus
a work ethic that matches Lightfoot's.

I think this is from a show that aired on our local PBS station a couple of years ago. It looks like the same man. I didn't get to see all of it, because each part aired on consecutive nights, and one of those nights I went to a fiddle jam in Canada.
I bet he'd be amazed by today's power tools.

oh yeah it is...the article mentioned the old guy on PBS so that's why i posted it...i have the full show but it's still too short, imo...i really love how he basically 'produced' this thing (ie. setting up tripod to capture clips of himself in action) on top of the fact that he was surviving and being so handy

i wondered how he had power replenishment for the old film camera, lots of batteries i suppose and perhaps frugal shooting (unlike today's videographers, lol)

i know i'd be looking over my shoulder if i was munching a SALMON sandwich...i'm pretty sure them griz would enjoy that scent very much

well, i wonder what Dick would have thought of Grizzly Man (i won't call him an idiot because he is dead and because we're supposed to keep threads positive) ...it's too bad that his gal friend as well as the big griz had to die

I think Tim was really arrogant in that film. He, of all people, should have known the dangers of a grizzly bear encounter. He pushed it too far, and he paid for it.

great venue for tonight, enjoy...haven't seen fan reviews for early Nov gigs yetI've seen the Alone In The Wilderness video on PBS a couple of times & what I thought was neat was the way he figured out how to keep predators from getting his meat supply by putting it in a two story meat locker. What I don't get is how on Earth could he stand living so far out & away from civilisation. I guess that just goes to show how cityfied I really am.
