copying home video DVD...

Not that I figure Corfid to be a "tech corner" type site, but I figure some of you might a bit more expertise on this topic than I have.

Now for the question: I'm trying to copy a simple home video DVD on my PC. I'm using Roxio 6, the "disc copier funtion", But the best I can get is a copy that includes only the first "track" and omits the bulk of the recording. I've tried using both the "+R" and the "-R" DVD types... best results were with the "+R" type.

The files carry a .VOB file extension.

I'm thinking that maybe there is just something that this version of Roxio just doesn't like about my source disc, so I wonder if there is a simple "burner" program available for free download that I might try.

Well, I'm open to suggestions....

i use Nero for that thing. i dont know if there's a free version, but there should be a site somewhere where you can download it. my version came with the burner

I've downloaded "Express Burn" from NCH software (I've had good experience with NCH products before) and it won't even cache the files... says there are disc errors.

A couple of possibiliities....

Magic DVD Copier a free demo program (5 uses) that will actually make copies of movies. I used it to make a backup of Live in Reno. it's available for download at many sites.

dunno what roxio 5 is but i used roxio Toast http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/overview.html

seems to be a free trial there....lots i know use the nero thing without issues it seems...i thought Windows had a disc copy utility similar to the throw in type Movie Maker (ie. you get what you pay for)....if it's home movies then i would spare no expense in ensuring you got them archived but i understand you want to be somehow satified that it's going to work before purchasing, it's aggravating that they don't take software returns thanks mainly to all the pirating out there...it seems like these blu rays are keeping ahead of that lot by having viewers be constantly updating their 'firmware' version...i sometimes miss the old days of hooking up 2 vcrs and pressing play and rec without much hassle and no digital errors messages to decipher:)

Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it.
I gave the NCH "Express Burn" a second try, and it worked this time! burned "+R" from the "-R" original. Then I tried my "-R" disc, only to discover that I had purchased "CD-R" discs! boy do I feel silly!!! But for the time being I'll stick with "+R" as it seems to work fine.

As for windows having a built in burner utility, I'm thinking that is does... somewhere. I looked but got nowhere at all.
