View Full Version : Leaf predication poll... winless and still counting
this past 12 months must be a record for the combined lowest winning % for the Leafs, Argos, Jays and Raptors
perhaps the new soccer team is what we should be focusing on
I voted........but I don't understand ......
The Leafs are 0-6 but they've lost all 7 games they played. Jesse Joe explained the point gismo, and that just doesn't make sense. If you lose, you lose, regardless of whether it's in overtime or the much disliked 'shootout'.
I voted that the losing streak will be 11. Let me know if I was right.

Doesn't make sense to me either..
loss = zero points
case closed.
Perhaps the NHL has been influenced by the new parenting style of 'no winners/losers' so little Johnny doesn't have his feelings crushed led to this crap I think.
Sports, by it's very nature is a winners/losers event. Deal with it. We certainly have had to here in Toronto..
NHL rules:
Points are awarded for each game, where two points are awarded for a win, one point for losing in overtime or a shootout, and zero points for a loss in regulation.
Among major professional sports leagues, the NHL is the only one to award a team points for losing in overtime.

Good. I'm not alone.
So......would I be right or wrong if the 'standings' list Toronto at 0-10 (with the overtime loss NOT included) ?
charlene

it's not that easy:
http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/standings.htm
TOronto:
GP - Games played 7
Wins - 0
Losses - 6
Ponts (OT) - 1
this would be 0-6-1
i vote they will go 0-11-1 before winning against the Lightning at home (can't say if in OT or Reg time though)..not sure if Kessel will be in the lineup before or after then but i wouldn't bank too much on that, who's gonna replace Savard as his set up man (that he had in Beantown)
rm, that means 0-12 in my books...so i should have clarified that it means 0 for 'how many games played'
char, you meant 0-6-1, i think...the Leafs are losing so many so quickly that they shot one loss right by me so 0-5 is n/a
i didnt mind the old ties but i guess they didnt like teams playing for ties in the last few minutes to they made it an incentive to win in Reg time, especially against a division opponent...meaning you would get your 2 points if winning in Reg time and advance 2 points against a division rival, whereas you would only advance by 1 if you had to use OT or the SO to win....if i rambled on more i could explain the new faults it's also created but ya get the gist, as char said, a loss is a loss but your record doesnt look so bad now
Leafs finished with 81 pts last year in 82 games...sounds almost like .500.....but no, they were actually 6 games under...but the 13 OT losses gave them a point in each to pad the misery
the year before I think we had 90 something points and missed playoffs also of course but some where saying how they had the a good year in getting that many points...bologni, you can't compare that total to years ago (BB=before Betman) when accumulating 90 something points actually meant you were decent
the first few games were exciting losses i'll say....now i hear they may switch to playing the dreadful trap, meaning even watching them lose will be a huge bore....so in short, yeah, put the parade on hold
So......would I be right or wrong if the 'standings' list Toronto at 0-10 (with the overtime loss NOT included) ?
right....but i just chose 0-11 by mistake using same logic, i meant 0-12...i won't lose sleep as they are no prizes anyhow, just playing for pride, like our Buds
ps) to add to the stupidity of the Bettman league, they don't play for a whole week (usually are 2, 3, 4 games per week) for some odd scheduling reason...last i looked the Olympics hadn't started
minor clarification: yes, a predication is similar to a prediction ;)

Ah rats, I did believe there was a prize with this.
I beating this to death......but it's driving me nuts. I don't understand why the overtime loss is not included in the loss column.
I could see this happening :
Team A loses all 82 games in overtime : Their record would be :
0-0 (82 points)
Team B has no overtime losses and finishes the season
40-42 (80 points)
It's madness.

you'd have to speak to the little pissant - Mr. Bettman..
lol
I'm just glad they haven't got the boys in figure skates..
madness reigns...indeed it does..

oh, but actually in that example even the 'old' way would ALSO conclude that Team A is superior....we used to get a point for a tie (before their was ever OT) so they would still get the 82 points...going undefeated in Regulation time is rewarded same as always but it's the bonus point that is new and really matters most when all those OT Win bonus points go to teams in your own division...just like in baseball, there is a lot (too much, imo
) of interdivisional play
you would need to get into a 4 team example with certain ones winning same amount of games but some in OT and some in REG and see who got the extra REG tie points for the what if comparison to be made to the tradition point system for standings
i never paid attention to baseball and basketball standings as a young kid cos it was all CFL and NHL until i got into the Expos, then later the Jays in 77...but i notice that GBL is the driving stat for Americans and there is no such thing as ties (except for the odd freakish baseball game)...if you want bizarre there will have to be a separate tutorial on the 'new' way CFL games are attempted to be settled (even though there can still be a tie...which there was the other night out west, 34-34, in a real game between 2 real teams...i dont know if our CFL commish also has rodent bloodlines...
oh, but actually in that example even the 'old' way would ALSO conclude that Team A is superior....
I thought that the overtime/shootout period was implemented to determine a winner.......there should be no 'thanks for participating' points awarded.
Somewhere in the annals of Corfid it is written (I think it was the legendary moderator) :
"loss = zero points
case closed."

nobody listens to me....
in the playoffs they play real hockey and the winner of the game is rewarded with the loser gaining nothing at all
the regular season is a farce with too many games and too many teams making the playoffs
in regular season, when the teams tie in regulation time, each team gets a point just like in the old days
then the madness begins and we get into some deviation of hockey to determine who will get a bonus point during the 'extra show'...real hockey always had 6 guys on each team whereas right away they eliminate a player from each side for the 5 min OT before they get into the showdown of breakaways....there might be one breakaway per hockey game in real hockey so why would the ability to score on a breakaway be a determinant of who was the better team that evening? ...in basketball they don't play 3 on 3 in OT and in baseball they don't suddenly play with 2 outfeilders or if tied after the 10th inning, go into a homerun derby or see who can throw the most strikes, etc, etc
so the question really is, what is a 'loss'...the real game is over after 60 minutes, then the circus begins....i think they should just go back to ties...or for starters, get rid of shootout and keep dropping players every five minutes ie. go from 4 on 4 to 3 on 3, etc...
mostly, the game has turned into a rotation of penalty killing and power player specialists, all generally controlled by the refereeing...i guess Bettman thinks it would be more appealing (less boring) to US fans and/or the next generation to be able to see a constant shooting gallery out on the ice
baseball teams don't get a point for tying after nine innings (even if they lose in extras) becuase the game continues without rule changes...maybe that helps explain it better (and more consice, lol)
the Maple Leaf Forever....
the Maple Leafs....whenever...

it's all about bringing in more viewers/tv revenue - more goals = more excitement and more people watching..the finesse and play of hockey as it should be and used to be is lost trying to inform and entertain the guy sitting out by his pool watching the big screen tv thru the lanai netting..

What's the difference between the Toronto Maple Leafs and a triangle?
A triangle has 3 points.
Why did Vesa Toskala interrupt two people having sex? He wanted to know what it felt like to stop someone from scoring.
Two friends die in a car accident during a terrible snow storm. They arrive in Hell and the Devil begins their punishment by turning up the heat very high. But the two friends are not in any pain, in fact they appear happy. The Devil asks why are they happy and they respond that they are from Canada and it's nice to be around warm weather. The Devil turns the heat even higher, still nothing. He then decides to lower the temperature in Hell as much as possible, thinking that the two friends could not bear such coldness. Instead he finds them happier than ever and jumping for joy. "It's freezing here!", says the Devil "Why are you two so happy??" One of the friends replies, "Hell just froze over! The Leafs won the Stanley Cup!"
The Leafs have applied to the NHL to play all their games underwater in future. Apparently there are 20,000 leagues under the sea and they hope they can find one they can win.
What do the Leafs and the Titanic have in common? They both look great until they hit the ice!
As a non-Leaves fan, I've always admired that slogan MLSE came up with..."The Passion That Unites Us All". You have to give them credit, that's a pretty clever way of saying "Misery Loves Company".
What do Vesa Toskala and Michael Jackson have in common? - They both wear one glove for apparently no reason.
Where would you find the Red Light District in Toronto?...Behind the Leafs net!!

Pretty good jokes, those poor Leafs must be hearing those jokes from all sides.
Harold Ballard must be turning in his grave.
I hope The Habs start to see that Halak is a better goalie than Price.
i vote they will go 0-11-1 before winning against the Lightning at home (can't say if in OT or Reg time though)..not sure if Kessel will be in the lineup before or after then
ahh, another solid loss effort goes into the books...i just read this article and i'd say my prediction is looking good:
"Phil Kessel hopes to soon be at the stage where he can be regarded as a healthy player, period.
Kessel, you should know, is practising pretty much full out these days and Wilson said yesterday that Nov.3 – just 10 days away – is the date on which he hopes the 22-year-old sniper is cleared for game action.
Wilson's crew plays Tampa Bay that night"
actually, i think mr Fezo might be the wisest of us all...if we do happen to go 0-81-1, well, we even lost (traded) our 1st draft pick, perhaps 1st overall...i'm going to start following tv billiards or poker...do we have a darts team?

Leafs Exchange Draft Picks With ChicagoSunday, 06.09.2009 / 3:09 PM / Press Releases
Toronto Maple LeafsBrian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Sunday that the hockey club has made a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks. The Leafs have reacquired their own 2010 second round draft pick from Chicago (previously acquired from the Montreal Canadiens) in exchange for a second round draft pick in 2011 and Toronto’s third round draft pick in 2011.
The Leafs previously acquired the 2011 second round draft pick along with Wayne Primeau from the Calgary Flames on July 27 in exchange for Anton Stralman, Colin Stuart and Toronto’s 2012 seventh round draft pick.

They lost but played good, I predict they will win the next game. If not then let's start counting the days before the coach goes, it's always the coach that has to be fired. Bring in Wayne Gretzky.
Bring in Wayne Gretzky.

Could Wayne Gretzky Be The Next Leaf Coach?
If you've ever said to yourself 'boy, would Wayne Gretzky look good in a Leaf uniform,' when number 99 was performing his miracles for Edmonton, you might not know what to make of this rumour. Wayne Gretzky a Leaf? Or maybe that should be: Wayne Gretzky, the new Leaf coach? In his blog for CityNews's sister station The Fan 590, Howard Berger speculates on a rumour he believes could one day be fact.
In the unusual world of professional sports, where hypotheses often become reality, could the Toronto Maple Leafs be considering the most renowned and celebrated name in National Hockey League annals for their prime executive vacancy? There are no hard facts to boost the notion that Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment is planning a frontal assault on the Phoenix Coyotes for Wayne Gretzky, but more than a few whispers in recent days suggest that No. 99 has not completely eluded MLSE's radar. If the Leafs contacted the Coyotes, Gretzky would merely have to grant himself permission to chat, for he is coach and part owner of the Phoenix club. Semantics, therefore, would not be an issue. All that needs to be answered is this: Would Gretzky divest himself of equity in the Coyotes to finally join the club he has followed since his earliest years?
"I think he'd be tempted to the core," suggested a long-time associate of Gretzky's, who chose to remain anomymous. "He certainly isn't looking to get out of Phoenix, and I think he's really starting to enjoy the coaching gig. But, the Leafs have always held a special place in his heart, even in the days when he was knocking the crap out of them with the Oilers and Kings. If MLSE ever said to him, 'Wayne, it's your baby. come in here, hire who you want, and run our hockey club', he'd have some serious thinking to do."

therein lies the problem. the MLSE suits would NEVER say that...they are always in charge despite what they have ever said to other GM's and coaches..
despite the tragic 43 year history since the last Cup win the powers that be in MLSE (Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment) are more insterested in the botton line than putting a winning team on the ice. When the worst team in the NHL is charging the highest prices to see the newest version of the losing Leafs, MLSE is laffing all the way to the bank...
just look at what they own:
http://www.theaircanadacentre.com/contact/
and
Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. (MLSE) is the owner and operator of the Toronto Maple Leafs National Hockey League team, Toronto Raptors National Basketball Association team, Toronto FC Major League Soccer team, and Toronto Marlies American Hockey League team—all based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In addition to owning these franchises as well as Leafs TV, Raptors NBA TV (the official television channels of the Maple Leafs and Raptors respectively), and GolTV Canada, MLSE is also involved in property management, including ownership of the Air Canada Centre, the home arena of the Maple Leafs and Raptors.
major stockholders in the MLSE are the Ontario Teachers Federation pension plan..(amongst dozens of other investments the pension plan has.. making it the 2nd largest pension plan in Canada)

I hear you Char, $$$ they are rich beyond belief, and it is a shame. But like The Bell Centre in Montreal, The Air Canada Centre is always full to capacity.... So I guess the fans who pay those ridiculous prices to see the games, are in some way the real losers.

jessie and char take the prize! (well, braggin rights, anyhow:) )
17 penalties called against the Ducks resulting in 11 Leaf powerplays...and 3 powerplays for Anaheim
we just need to use that goalie and have that referee assigned to all remaining games and then we can start planning the big parade! ;)
