The Leafs are 0-6 but they've lost all 7 games they played. Jesse Joe explained the point gismo, and that just doesn't make sense. If you lose, you lose, regardless of whether it's in overtime or the much disliked 'shootout'.

I voted that the losing streak will be 11. Let me know if I was right.

Perhaps the NHL has been influenced by the new parenting style of 'no winners/losers' so little Johnny doesn't have his feelings crushed led to this crap I think.
Sports, by it's very nature is a winners/losers event. Deal with it. We certainly have had to here in Toronto..

NHL rules:
Points are awarded for each game, where two points are awarded for a win, one point for losing in overtime or a shootout, and zero points for a loss in regulation.
Among major professional sports leagues, the NHL is the only one to award a team points for losing in overtime.

char, you meant 0-6-1, i think...the Leafs are losing so many so quickly that they shot one loss right by me so 0-5 is n/a

i didnt mind the old ties but i guess they didnt like teams playing for ties in the last few minutes to they made it an incentive to win in Reg time, especially against a division opponent...meaning you would get your 2 points if winning in Reg time and advance 2 points against a division rival, whereas you would only advance by 1 if you had to use OT or the SO to win....if i rambled on more i could explain the new faults it's also created but ya get the gist, as char said, a loss is a loss but your record doesnt look so bad now

Leafs finished with 81 pts last year in 82 games...sounds almost like .500.....but no, they were actually 6 games under...but the 13 OT losses gave them a point in each to pad the misery

the year before I think we had 90 something points and missed playoffs also of course but some where saying how they had the a good year in getting that many points...bologni, you can't compare that total to years ago (BB=before Betman) when accumulating 90 something points actually meant you were decent

the first few games were exciting losses i'll say....now i hear they may switch to playing the dreadful trap, meaning even watching them lose will be a huge bore....so in short, yeah, put the parade on hold

Team B has no overtime losses and finishes the season

40-42 (80 points)

oh, but actually in that example even the 'old' way would ALSO conclude that Team A is superior....we used to get a point for a tie (before their was ever OT) so they would still get the 82 points...going undefeated in Regulation time is rewarded same as always but it's the bonus point that is new and really matters most when all those OT Win bonus points go to teams in your own division...just like in baseball, there is a lot (too much, imo
) of interdivisional play

you would need to get into a 4 team example with certain ones winning same amount of games but some in OT and some in REG and see who got the extra REG tie points for the what if comparison to be made to the tradition point system for standings

i never paid attention to baseball and basketball standings as a young kid cos it was all CFL and NHL until i got into the Expos, then later the Jays in 77...but i notice that GBL is the driving stat for Americans and there is no such thing as ties (except for the odd freakish baseball game)...if you want bizarre there will have to be a separate tutorial on the 'new' way CFL games are attempted to be settled (even though there can still be a tie...which there was the other night out west, 34-34, in a real game between 2 real teams...i dont know if our CFL commish also has rodent bloodlines...

in the playoffs they play real hockey and the winner of the game is rewarded with the loser gaining nothing at all

the regular season is a farce with too many games and too many teams making the playoffs

in regular season, when the teams tie in regulation time, each team gets a point just like in the old days

then the madness begins and we get into some deviation of hockey to determine who will get a bonus point during the 'extra show'...real hockey always had 6 guys on each team whereas right away they eliminate a player from each side for the 5 min OT before they get into the showdown of breakaways....there might be one breakaway per hockey game in real hockey so why would the ability to score on a breakaway be a determinant of who was the better team that evening? ...in basketball they don't play 3 on 3 in OT and in baseball they don't suddenly play with 2 outfeilders or if tied after the 10th inning, go into a homerun derby or see who can throw the most strikes, etc, etc

so the question really is, what is a 'loss'...the real game is over after 60 minutes, then the circus begins....i think they should just go back to ties...or for starters, get rid of shootout and keep dropping players every five minutes ie. go from 4 on 4 to 3 on 3, etc...

mostly, the game has turned into a rotation of penalty killing and power player specialists, all generally controlled by the refereeing...i guess Bettman thinks it would be more appealing (less boring) to US fans and/or the next generation to be able to see a constant shooting gallery out on the ice

baseball teams don't get a point for tying after nine innings (even if they lose in extras) becuase the game continues without rule changes...maybe that helps explain it better (and more consice, lol)

I hear you Char, $$$ they are rich beyond belief, and it is a shame. But like The Bell Centre in Montreal, The Air Canada Centre is always full to capacity.... So I guess the fans who pay those ridiculous prices to see the games, are in some way the real losers.
