In the early days, GL played a D-28 and D-35. Now it's a D-18. Anyone know when or why the switch?

I don't know why he switched, but I can tell you that
there's a difference in the construction of those Martins.
Excuse me if I'm telling you something you already are
aware of.........
The D-18 is mahogany on the back and sides, not rosewood.
That model is used by some acoustic lead guitarists because
it tends to emphasize the bass less than rosewood
......and some believe it
cuts through the PA mix a little better.

It may be that he liked the way the tone of the D-18
mixed with the group better.....or just liked that particular
guitar better. I would just be guessing......... Maybe somebody
has asked him..........

Yeah, mahogany is a harder wood thank rosewood which is where the difference lies.

The D-18 shows up on the APPT cover. Must have been around that time frame.

I still can't figure out exactly what the black material covering the buckle rash on that guitar's back is.
