I have just visited a web site containing 18 superb images from the Hubble space telescope starting at number 1 at:-

These two really caught my eye:-

Those are some beautiful photos.

I have a winter 2007 DISCOVER magazine called UNSEEN UNIVERSE. One of my favorite pictures in it is EAGLE NEBULA - Your 2nd photo reminded me of it.

Yes Patti that is another great Hubble shot I chose those two images because they strongly reminded me of some of the ideas and techniques intrioduced by my favoUrite artist
J.M.E (Joseph Mallord William Turner) whose style is said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism
his two most famous paintings are probably the fighting Temerairehttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/94/Turner%2C_J._M._W._-_The_Fighting_T%C3%A9m%C3%A9raire_tugged_to_her_la st_Berth_to_be_broken.jpgThe

and Rail Steam and Speed

both of which I have seen in London and they are truly magnificent, but there is another great painting by Turner that I was unaware of until a couple of years ago
http://www.victorianweb.org/painting/turner/paintings/slaveship.jpg

J. M. W. Turner, Slave Ship. [Full title: Slavers Overthrowing the Dead and Dying -- Typho[on]n Coming On.
Oil on Canvas. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
So on a future visit to Boston I am determined to go and see it
This painting was very influential in starting the process that this year culminated in the installation of President Obama
because in the UK where the slave trade had originated William Wilberforce spent his life trying
to get slavery abolished:-
from:-
http://www.jgpc.org.uk/sermons/what%20price%20freedom.pdf
Abolition of the Slave Trade Bill in 1807.
11 times it was voted down, but on the 12th occasion in 1807, the bill passed. It
would take another 30 years, till 1833 for slavery itself to be outlawed, 3 days before
Wilberforce died.

There were three images that had a powerful influence on people’s opinions:
1)a painting by Turner called ‘slave ship – slavers overthrowing dead and dying –
typhoon coming on’; this painting was said to have had a startling impact in its day;

Wow! Those Hubble images are stunning! I can sit for hours and look at the images from space...so hauntingly beautiful.

The Turner artworks are very interesting and beautiful, John. The Slave Ship has an impact. I can see why it would sway opinions and have influence on someones heart and mind.
Thanks for sharing :)

I was sorry to hear they were having some difficulties with the repairs up there today... and getting behind schedule and all. I hope things are better and they have a nice safe trip back home.

I love looking at those wonderful pictures too.
