hiiiiii everyone

Just wanted to say hello and I finally felt up to reading through some posts -glad to see a lot of folks getting to the concerts and having a good time :). The last concert I went to was in Sept., and I knew that may most likely be the last one for awhile :( since this year is a big one with my son graduating from college . And I had been feeling rundown with medical stuff and career issues too much to plan ahead for doing anything fun. Don't even know if I can make any concerts when Gordon tours nearby here since during that time we'll be busy moving, getting settled in and new jobs, etc. I've been hoping/trying to see if I can get to at least one concert before I get more busy with all this!!!

Are the thumbs at least working?

That's smome set of problems there.

I just half an hour ago got a permanent cap put on. I liked the temporary better actually... May need to be fiddled with since now I bite differently. Will test it out on some actual food.

Keep in touch. We worry about you...

OK. Food test passed. The cap feels a little funny but not so much that I'd worry about it - my bite is just a little different. My teeth are so wacky I never have a good bite. I was well into my 30s before a dentist said boo about it. At this age I'm not about to get braces. They'd have done me a world of good way back...

Yeah, I'm missing teh wisdom teeth - and likely the wisdom - and two other molars on one side from an infection ages ago but everything else is now steady and staying! I have a cousin - my dad's first cousin - who is 94 and still has every tooth! Boggles the mind. Used to drive dad crazy....

Hi Pam - sorry to hear of all the medical/dental trevails you've been weathering. My sympathy. Congratulations to your son ! You sound as though your spirits are up, despite, everything , and dental - that one of the hardest pains to endure. Hang in there Podunk :)

Jeez...it sounds like you have had a rotten time of it. :( I can imagine that having a sinus infection along with the dental issues would be miserable.
I hope you start feeling better soon.

You are giving up cigarettes with all this stress???? Oh my gosh, you are a brave soul....lol. It's hard but hang in there. I quite a long time ago and I am so happy to have that demon out of my life.
Really, you can do it :)

Glad your thumbs are doing okay :)

I get congested every time after I light up!!! Only managed to go 4 days without smoking a couple of weeks ago while I was a friends house. On the 4th night...I new for sure there had to be a cigarette somewhere in my car! Felt a little foolish looking under the seats and then found a broken one that had fallen between the seats. Put it together and lit it up and it was GOOD.

Back to smoking but cut down. I can't afford $7/pack and I don't want to order any ($2/pk). I have a quit date coming up and all my quit smoking brochures put together. And I have a friend who is going to help me get back to running again (it's been many years!).

Pam, your post made me laugh. I remember what it's like and some of the less than savory ways I would find stray cigarettes around the house or car.
It's a rough addiction to kick but it's doable.

It took three months for me to actually say that I felt like I was out of the woods. I can't say that I still wouldn't like a cigarette now and then, but I can say that I don't have to have one. The compulsion has been replaced with a desire once in a while that passes very quickly.

If you need any words of encouragement, then please, don't hesitate to pm me.

awww thanks Nightingale!!! Last time I quit for an extended period of time, I had 2 friends who were reformed smokers who I'd call for support (one was a microbiologist at a lung research lab). I remember they would talk to me very gently, like I was a toddler hehe. It helped!! Now there are hotlines and I have called at least once!! A BIG help :).

I've been smoking since I was a kid. 11 and that's how I quit the thumb-sucking :(. Thought maybe if I started sucking my thumb again, would help me quit but my thumbs still hurt :(. And besides, it took me a long time to improve my speech and get rid of the lisp

Oh...yes, the hotlines they have now are great. My sister used Chantix and they have a hotline for support. They really kept her on track.

Yeah, I started smoking at a young age too. I think I was 17. It seemed like a good idea at the time. :)
Now that I think about it, there was quite a few things I did at 17 that seemed like a good idea at the time but turned out not to be...lol. :)
That's a whole different subject :)

Thumb sucking...lol...I never thought of that but it makes sense. :) It would solve the "hand to mouth" habit.
Well, good luck :) :) You can do it!

Hey Pam,

Here's something I never told you. I wouldn't marry a smoker so Ken quit. Pretty much cold turkey. After a few weeks the doctor gave him a tranquilizer patch for 4 days and then he was through. You know it is not easy but not smoking is so good for your body, skin and a lot of other things.

I am sending you some strength so go for it. Please don't suck your thumb until it feels better. :headbang:

haha and thanks for the encouraging words! And damn I haven't been able to find any Teaberry gum. I found one 2-year old  pack in a draw. There was also a flavor of Chiclets that helped me in the past, but then it was discontinued. Well there's a flavor of Trident that may help but I can't chew on my left side. I've never heard of a tranquilizer patch!

Good for Ken doll!!!!

Some light at the end of the tunnel for me soon I HOPE already!!! I have been tolerating some discomfort and swelling on 1/2 my face for a looooong time and always so miserable. Was disagnosed/treated for a root abscess over a year ago...but my new dentist didn't get around to pulling the broken tooth until October! But the pain from my nose, my lower cheek to my ear and the swelling continued on since. Knew I had a sinus infection but I waited until it got REALLY bad before doing anything about it. My head is remarkably clear now haha what a difference! But the other symptoms have continued on :(.

ok let me end this -last week a 2nd dentist found the problem is from the front half of another tooth and I'll be getting a temp cap tomorrow. Appointment #20. Yep! My 20th dentist appointment since this whole thing started!!! I've been more in pain since the tooth was worked on last week, but it's not so bad I can't tolerate it but it does make me miserable still so I haven't wanted to be around anyone :(. I've gotten out 3 times this winter -2 of those were just last week!!!

Been trying to quit smoking too so grrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!

Will try to get back here when I'm in better spirits!!! I hope everyone is well and take care!!!

PamOh you poor kid you! I know exactly how awful it is to have an abcessed tooth. I had to take antibiotics for a while before the dentist could even examine it, and when he did, he took it out that day. The next time I had a tooth like that worked on, though, the dentist turned out to be the type that had all the bedside manners & sympathy of a bed of nails:(!Anyway, it's actually a good thing that you're trying to quit smoking, as it may make any future visits to the dentist a great deal easier on your body. Since I've never smoked myself, nor do I drink, the strongest painkiller I've ever taken for a tooth extraction has been Extra Strength Tylenol. I made the mistake one time of taking half of a Lorcet & the damn thing knocked me on my fat keister for a day & a half! So I wish you a lot of luck in your efforts to stop smoking.

On the eve of April Fool's Day, and the federal tax rising to $1.01 (US) per pack, I thought I'd share this quip from Mark Twain I saw in the morning paper:

"giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I've done it thousands of times."
