I don't know if anyone here listens to their sports talk show that airs on ESPN radio. I was amazed today to hear lots and lots of chatter about Lightfoot. The hosts, who are about the same age, will be differentiated this way :

mike (average size fellow, journalist)

MIKE( burly dude, former pro football player)

mike spoke of a chance meeting with a teenage idol of his, David Cassidy. Later on he asked MIKE who HE would like to spend an hour chatting with. MIKE responded first with Bill Cosby. When prodded for a 'juicier' name, MIKE said Gordon Lightfoot. mike had no idea who he is. When asked to name a Lightfoot song, MIKE said Sundown (sang a line), TWOTEF (sang a line), Circle Of Steel, and Don Quixote.

mike consistently 'razzed' MIKE about his choice of Lightfoot.

MIKE received a phone text message from Darius Rucker (lead singer for Hootie and the Blowfish) which, in caps, read GORDON LIGHTFOOT RULES.

I'm tired of typing......'twas a great way to start the day.

RM, thanks for posting about the discussion on the radio show - I love it. I wish I was listening, but since I'm not into sports that would be unlikely. Obviously MIKE has great taste in music!

...ESPN must be affiliated with Disney...

Yes indeed. ESPN is part of the Disney empire.

I saw it on ESPN2--they simulcast a TV version of the show along with the radio version. I was surprised but thought it was pretty cool. MIKE even sang a few bars of "Sundown," I believe (might have been "Wreck"). He actually sang pretty well, too.

Oh, I see, apparently he sang a line or two of both songs. Didn't see that in RM's original post.

Just a follow up......

I'm not sure how they got on the subject, but this morning MIKE mentioned that he had received a message from Lightfoot's drummer stating that he had heard MIKE saying that he would like to meet Gordon, and that he (obviously Barry Keane) would like to help make that happen. MIKE said he'll try to arrange to attend one of his concerts.

Hope it happens.

hey rm, maybe they will go one further and have Gord and Barry come on the air for a brief segment and chat some sports...they did this for hours on a Toronto sports talk show (the Fan 590, with Stormin Normin) which I believe char posted online

then again, even though Barry is a sports keener, unless they talk lots of hockey, I don't know if he or Gord could offer much opinion on US college hoops or NBA or whatever the sports buzz these days is south of the border

...there is of course the ongoing Baseball classic (Canada has already got out their golf clubs) or the Tim Hortons brier, aka curling/drinking tourney going up here

maybe once the boys finally give up touring there will be time for a Gord & Barry in the Morning radio show, heh heh
