Shutup and Deal, I'm Losin'

I know this is more of Lightfoots fine poetry at work here, but in the song "If You Need Me":
"But if you need me
Show me a way to get through
Cause I've not see anyone like you
Since I was a man"
but when he says "since I was a man", what exactly is he saying? Is he no longer consider himself a man anymore? Or could it mean he no longer considers himself a young man?
