View Full Version : Gord TV/Radio appearances - potential consolidated multimedia thread

hi (Jesse & Char, first and foremost :) )

thinking out loud here...I made a suggestion that we might have a section for youtube and other multimedia links related to Gord, but don't expect this would be that easy a set up, I wouldn't know, I don't know HTML or Flash or whatever

but, wonder if you could provide a consolidated reference to any video links relating to the below 'checklist' per www.Lightfoot.ca?

many fans have been collecting reel to reel, VHS, DVD, archives, etc for years and now that the internet offerings are extensive (although not necessarily high quality, for nothing can match watching uncompressed, full screen TV and stereo audio performances) I thought we could see where we stand from a got em/need em standpoint

it would be great for Gord fans who have just stumbled on the internet or corfid also because it's pretty easy to miss a video post or to attempt to search for specifics - this would also eliminate a lot of repeat posts too - oh, Radio audio could also be included

while I've got the suggestion box open, how about the same for "Lightfoot covers"?

the most interesting posts to me anyhow, are the Concert reviews given by fans here and I think it's ashamed that many of them get knocked to the bottom of the thread list so quickly when a slew of media posts (all appreciated fo course:) ) appear, and for folks who just stumble by once a week, well it makes it cumbersome to scroll through looking for these discussions - I guess the alternative is to have someone keep bringing the back to the top

I had never seen the Cash 'Softly' performance (any sign of the Steel Rail Blues/Train Song Medley segment? I love that) as well as the Wayne and Shuster appearance if not for your posts, so am glad I didn't miss your links to them, so thanks again Jessie and cheers :) jj

ps) ...I gave up long ago on hunting for the Tonight Show and 1973 Soundstage video stuff but perhaps all hope is not lost now that folks are posting everything but the kitchen sink (ok, even that!) online

Just responded to the other thread ...the Cash one.

YEs Yes and more Yes...

Although, I'd prefer a remixed 5.1 Dolby Surround of all the old stuff..rather than compressed..poor quality copied ten times youtube stuff. I bought a boot leg copy of the 75 show,...horrible quaility..

So.. great idea...whos got the ball on this one...

and...as I said ..it could be a beautifully orchestrated DVD by Gord's team.

Rather than put together by fans...

This is a job for "Super Duck" lol  Im going to let the moderator handle this. I sure understand what your asking jj ... I trust that you do know that every You Tube video can be watch in the full screen of your computer. But I also know that it's never gonna be like watching it in full stereo on a big screen TV. Funny you should mention The Carson appearance that Gord did, I was thinking of that last night. I never seen it but have read lots about it. This would be something very interesting indeed... Maybe it will pop up on You Tube in the future ??? Anyway Im open for anything that would make life easier for Corfidans. Char any thoughts here ? lol :)

hi guys, some comments:

i think Gord would rather that many of the TV appearances, that we already got our hands on, be taken out of circulation (might even pay $100K to burn them, lol)

so i dont see his people compiling something of high quality unless he is saving up to release all down the road and make for sale so that his dependents/beneficiaries prosper ...this may happen the same day that he or his estate starts letting his tunes be used for commercial jingles:(

bootleg VHS compilations have been made over the years, they have also been transferred to DVD for what it is worth but at no better quality

thanks for the tip JJo, yes, I more often click on the Watch in High Quality button (I notice audio improvement, which is usually what I am seeking) on youtube if available, then I might try go full screen but everything gets pixelated and even lower resolution so I just usually watch the 3X4 inch window with my nose to the monitor, lol

for above, how about pasting the existing URLs for clips or series (song by song) of clips underneath each of the appearance headings listed above ...I could give it a go but I thought it was a job for Mighty Jessie would might already have a catalogue of these links he has surfed out....maybe Sir John or Annie...I dont know if its a job for char, she is still working on mastering the copy and paste :p

I would recommend taking the checklist (we must have a good 20-40% already available online) into MS Word and assembling the URLs from prior posts then pasting it back into a thread... I dont know if folks do this at other fan sites, I would hope nobody would end up profiting from something like this ...a good rainy day task anyhow:)

Mighty Jesse ! NOT !!! jj you have a go at it, or Sir John, or anyone that would be interested. Thanks for your kind words, but I dont want to take such a project. Since I wont be around here anyway from mid July to mid/late August... This Im sure will make some folks happy !!! :) Im off to Montreal (Laval) Quebec, to visit my niece Lisa which I am her godfather,( dont know if this is good or not ??)

Then Alberta Bound to visit relatives, in Fort McMurray & Edmonton. And finally finish in Kitchener Ontario, my second home with lots of relatives living there, also want to catch a weekend of Jays game, and try to shake hands with Matt Stairs, my favorite Jays player, from Fredericton, NB. Will go to CN Tower for sure to check that glass floor elevator. And I want to visit Orillia before Im 6 feet under !

If posting videos from You Tube does not please certain folks, just one word from our dear moderator "Char," and that will be the end of that :) But I think "CORFID" is a nice place to visit and even join, for any Gordon Lightfoot fan out there. Lots to view and read here about this "Master Poet Genius."

There is no other singers (performers) that has a Site as devoted to he or she that I was able to find, like we have here at Corfid.

I really think this is the best informative Site on the Internet for everything Lightfoot!!! :)

Im sure some performers would like to have a fan Site like Gordy has here. Mind you he deserves it, and he may or may not check in here from time to time, but Im sure there are folks close to him that do read what goes on here...

Sorry for the long post... :)

Cheers,

jj

JJo, can't imagine who isn't thrilled by them...just need them centralized in a section or thread (but I suppose that would get very loooong)

here's an example of what I mean:

hey, sure sounds like a great trip:)

Thanks jj, you are right that example is very neat. I think you should do it here for the Gord stuff. And BTW I am/was a big fan of Glen Campbell. Before discovering Lightfoot's Music in 1967/69, Glen Campbell was my my favorite entertainer, would never miss The Goodtime Hour. :)

I've got lots on my plate right now and have no time to search out the links etc. to consolidate them into one thread. (plus my brain is still in 'vacation' mode - lol)

If James or JJoe wish to give it a go then that would be great..

Perhaps when all is centralized Florian can put the link on the HOME page..

Hey Florian - get out of the garden for a minute... I've got a job for you..

great, so maybe the solution for this consolidated gord TV appearances thread idea should be with the Youtube shared group channel approach

not quite certain of how many links I've saved to his appearances thus far

as for Gord covers, I must have over 100 saved which JJo, myself or others have stumbled upon and shared...I really don't know how to add them to John's cover lover:) channel...not even sure how to add the Massey jam covers...there are also some wonderful links to audio only covers, such as Wayne, Ed, DK, CC, Melissa, etc that are not to be missed...

anyhow, good stuff...i imagine the TV appearance ones will be deleted once the YouPolice and/or other authorities stumble upon them....act quick

jj - I'm not sure if the ideas above covered this thought I have, specifically some of the terms I don't know may have allready. Anyway - what of a dedicated files section just as we pick between small talk, test area, general discussion; what about a fourth - everything video/audio ? Then they wouldn't get lost in all the posts pushing them down. I know this would not be a P/R to pull-in new members or surfers-type of solution, but it would surely at least make watching, finding, and listening easy to find and pcik from. It probably got said above; maybe that one post suggesting a "section" for them meant the same thing ?

Also- an anecdotal comment on The Merv Griffin show. I remember watching that and was even sort of nervous 'for him' the way he seemed. He was wearing that velvety marroon jacket (smoking jacket ? ala The Heff lol ). Well, he played two excellent songs between the talk part, the 'talk' made me cringe for him. I've never seen him like that, I think he really meant it when he said directly to Merv in an allready stalled attempt at interview by ole Merv (that guy gives me the creeps, gotta say it)Gord says in response to some question I forget, but it pertained to TV appearances and his relative avoidance by choice compared to other stars as I recall, but what he then said I will never forget, Gord says: "I gotta tell ya, I really just hate TV. Saying that to a TV mogul lol.....

And - 'Thats why I am not on much at all. My manager gets on me about it" - pretty close but not verbatim. I died laughing, but Merv was sweating bullets, Gord was tight-lipped, seemed definately pi88ed-off about something, and he hardly said any other words besides that quote than 'yep' nope' 'maybe'.lol.... Merv was allegedly quoted afterwards that that was the hardest interview he ever did. Gord's performaces were great, though. I do have the impression that, as affable and nice as he is to his fans, he does not suffer a fool...lol

If Florian can make a FORUM for COVERS, TV APPEARANCES, RADIO etc. at CORFID then folks would have the stuff here and the thread wouldn't have to always be brought back to the top or searched for by anyone, including new visitors. In that FORUM would be separate threads for the COVERS, LIGHTFOOT on stage, RADIO, TV..etc..
If anybody has anything to add they would post the video etc. in the appropriate thread in that new forum.

just a thought..

youngstranger

I think a seperate thread for Gord and for covers would be good. It can be very disappointing when you see a new video listed and then discover it isn't by the man himself.

jj
01-30-2009, 10:25 AM
just a thought..

keep that thought:)

there are so many great covers besides the masterpieces performed by Tim, Larry, Kefera, Brian...this rejuvenated idea may just raise jesse jo from his winter hibe:)

if all covers are in one thread, it would be quite long....we talked of sorting covers by either by song or by performer ...i lean toward by song because youtube is already presented by performer, it would be redundant

for Gord TV clips or bootleg/handheld blair witch productions, having them chronologically presented would be nice

aint this one pretty fine? nice audio recording
he does about thirty Gord cover per his live set list

thinking out loud here...I made a suggestion that we might have a section for youtube and other multimedia links related to Gord...
but, wonder if you could provide a consolidated reference to any video links relating to the below 'checklist' per www.Lightfoot.ca?

it would be great for Gord fans who have just stumbled on the internet or corfid also because it's pretty easy to miss a video post or to attempt to search for specifics - this would also eliminate a lot of repeat posts too - oh, Radio audio could also be included

while I've got the suggestion box open, how about the same for "Lightfoot covers"?

ok, great that new section has been added:)

there is a lot fo work to do there, every day a new amateur Lightfoot cover must be appearing on youtube but even just assembling the mass of pro Covers out there (see Waynes full list at the Lightfoot site) is overwhelming...I bet Wayne gave up on trying to keep up on those, whew

but the Covers section was just a second thought above, I think what a new member would be most excited about is a section of actual Gord performances

oh, I didnt necessarily mean for them to be in Discussion area but perhaps off the main page similar to char interview:)

I would over ride the current "Live 8 at AOL Music" section and expand it to all available performance...TV or pro recorded ones anyhow, not all those cellphone bootleg videos unless they have decent audio...btw, char's SFAWN recording at Hugh's is definitely on the "include" list:):)

btw, something else that would be fine would be to have any of the Lightfoot dedicated lyrics posted for those who don't know the JP Cormier, Guess Who, Finnan, etc pieces...not every artist has a selection of songs written about them

anyhow, something to ponder...I guess adding a new section is not as hard as I thought....I guess the Covers could have a thread for each song or artist (tough choice) and then be expanded within each, by artist or song, respectively

way to go char, florian:)

charlene

yep - in the COVERS FORUM threads can be individualized by performer..
that's the plan.
yep. that's the plan.

I've found the links i saved and offer them to get you started, char

not sure if anything has been added recently but then again, many i tried were deleted (that's the problem when linking to video posted without consent/violating upload terms) so my list dwindled, it's pretty meagre actually but hopefully a joy for any new members who haven't seen Gord over the years and have not gone through the challenges of collecting heaps of vhs/dvds of televised performances

i excluded the many live bootlegs out there and tried to go for quality broadcasts...i had to put in the recent Huge's SFAWN cos it's just a gem and so fresh!

i also excluded the Reno DVD stuff cos it's easily available for sale and those links are bound to disappear sometime sooner than later...if new folks want to see those then they should drop $20 and see it all in high quality on their 60" plasmas, lol

How's this for a thought? Communicating with Val and Wayne, and working together to share the info so each of the 3 great web sites have it?

Couple of thoughts regarding the section on "Covers." How about Covers by Professionals and a separate Covers by Amateurs. I would hate to see Johnny Cash mixed in with Joe Schmoe.

jj

good suggestion, gitch...but don't think there's much collaboration amongst sites...actually, i think the corfid site is the only one which shares links to other GL sites

jjo (aka, super duck!:)), you have already knocked a bunch of off the big checklist

btw, i dont think there is any video archived of GL classic appearance on Carson, agh
