His voice is really nice too.

That is the first time I have ever heard Miguel. Really beautiful song but it's so sad. :(

Thanks for putting them up. :)

Every time I hear mention of Miguel, my mind travels back to the days when Lightfoot would pick up song requests placed at the base of his microphone during intermission. At one performance, when going through them, he uttered "Miguel ?!!!!" in a scoffing and incredulous manner. I don't think he was very fond of that song.

RM - I think part of the reason he doesn't anymore is it is physically uncomfortable for him. He's got his set list with spares and seldom takes the list off track..but it was great to watch for your piece of paper to be picked up and possibly read out loud..and then sung..
I love Miguel..it's a great story/song..

I always loved that song as well and Gord did a super job with it on the "Summer Side Of Life" Album. One of my favorites from that LP... :)

Well, the performance I was referring to was in the early 80's. I don't recall where I read it, but I believe he also said the song was "geographically incorrect" (Lightfootspeak). Has anyone here ever heard him perform it in concert ?

Nightingale
06-24-2008, 01:55 AM
Well, he did write the song, right?
I wish he would sing it in concert even if he isn't that fond of it....lol...we all like it.

That's a neat story about people and how they gave him their song requests during a concert.
That would be very cool to have your song mentioned and then played by him.
Shoot, I missed out on so much by not being a long time fan but I guess it's better late than never.

Summer Side Of Life...I sometimes wonder if I will EVER get all of his music bought and listened to....

Hey Nightingale,

I bought "Summer Side Of Life" when I was still in school. Listening to that Album in those days just simply made me happy to be alive, and I remember thinking Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian just like me. I really think that's when I started being proud to be a Canadian. The music and the words on that LP, his pronounciation of words on certain songs... and that face on the album cover, made me wish I was him... What A Guy !!!

In those days I had all the LP's, so when a new one would come out I would get it right away...

As for you Anne, discovering him this late in life, I suggest if you dont already own it, you should buy "Songbook" 4 CD's with songs from many of his LP's. But "Miguel" is not on there, nor is "Love & Maple Syrup", another great one. :)

Jesse Joe,
That's such a nice story about "Summer Side Of Life". Thanks for telling me about it.:)

I think music is magical...it's so wonderful when it touches your heart and makes you "happy to be alive". Gordon is amazing...hands down the best songwriter/lyricist that I have ever heard, Canadian or otherwise.

You have many reasons to be proud of your country and your heritage, my friend. Canada is a wonderful country with wonderful people. I sometimes feel a bit envious. I think Canada has a lot of integrity as well as many gifted musicians. :)

Yes, I will look into getting the SongBook collection...sounds like good advice.
I am planning to get every cd though...it's just a matter of when...lol.

Hi Bill W, you got me thinking of writting to Tim also, and I did. Basically inviting him to join Corfid. And I told him what a good talent he has. Here is what he wrote back... ~Jesse Joe~

Hi Jesse Joe,

thanks for the message, and it's fine with me that you're posting my videos. I can't imagine a group I'd rather have see them more than a bunch of Lightfoot fans like myself.

I actually got an email from someone named Bill yesterday letting me know about the posts. I stopped over at your forum briefly to take a look. I suppose I should join. If I haven't I guess it's because I worry about spending too much time browsing the internet and not getting work done! It's already a challenge keeping YouTube off my mind. ;-)

Still, it seems only right under the circumstances. Perhaps you'll see me there soon.

Thanks for writing Jesse Joe and for listening to and promoting my videos. I will be making many more.

Hi everyone,

it's me Tim. I'm glad you're enjoying my videos. I've been a fan since I was 8 years old and first heard If You Could Read My Mind - before I knew what it was about. The music and the voice was enough to hook me for life, and he doesn't know it, but GL taught me how to play the guitar.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad to be able to share the music with you. I will be making more for sure. Feel free to make a request if you like, or just wait to see what I've gotten up to next.

best wishes,

Wow, Tim. Your musical quest is almost identical to mine. Except I didn't hear IYCRMM until I was about 14.

I'm curious about your guitar. I'm pretty sure it's a Martin. What model?

Hi Cathy,

With the sound and the look Im guessing that it is a Martin... :)

Hi Cathy and Jesse Joe,

Cathy: It's a Martin D-35. I bought it new in 1980. It was how I established my credit history as a teenager. It took me two years to pay for it, and I had to spend about two months of that cleaning restaurant toilets to finish paying if off. It was worth it. I have since bought other guitars of course but nothing as nice. Someday I'll expand my collection to include something with a wider fingerboard. I have out-sized hands I'm afraid.

Jesse Joe: thanks for the welcome. I thought for sure that my idea for the screen name would be taken. There are a couple of similar ones but lucky for me (for once) I was actually able to use my first choice -though I mis-spelled it at first and had to re-register to get it right!

Cathy

I thought it looked and sounded like a Martin. I have two of them... an infamous D-15 (that Terry Clements played a few months before I fell off a float and cracked it up during a parade, but luckily it's fixed), and an OM28V that I paid for when the town of Mars Hill gave me $1260 to repair the D-15. The D-15 is a special guitar. I've been told that it's the best sounding D-15 in exsistence.

You'd probably like the OM28V. It has a wide fingerboard mounted on a vintage style neck. It's great for fingerpicking. I didn't like it at first, but after messing around with the saddle and nut, it's a great guitar.

Wow, that must have been awful to crack up your D-15 like that!

I was looking at the OM line a while back. I haven't had a chance to actually try one. I've tried other fingerstyle guitars like Breedlove and Brouwer (not sure on the spelling of that one), but I can't afford one right now. I keep saying to myself that I'll play out somewhere and earn what I need to feed my guitar habit but I never get around to it. Not enough hours in the day.

I'm also interested in the contemporary instrumental fingerstylists. I used to play a lot of Alex DeGrassi. I may post one of those some time if I can get a good enough sound.

Say I've been to your website but my mac doesn't like the format of the tunes you have linked to it. Do you have any YouTube vid's yourself? I'd like to hear your stuff. You play a lot of the same artists that I do!

DawnsMinstrel,

Do you have any Lightfoot concert experiences to share ?
Hi RM,

well, I've seen him twice, "but that was so long ago...." Once when I was maybe 13 or 14 and once again when I was 19. (I'm now 46) The first was memorable for how my sister and I ruined the experience by bickering with each other through much of the concert. I feel bad about that to this day. We were stupid teenagers. We get along just fine now. The second time was the one time I summoned the courage to ask the girl of my dreams out on a date. It may seem strange that a 19 year old would be having trouble asking for dates, but I was pathologically shy as young man. She said yes and we had a fine time. But just couldn't believe she really liked me, so that was that. She doesn't know it, but many of the songs I sang on my front porch, "A Minor Ballad," "Go My Way," and many others were sung for her. Sigh....

DawnsMinstrel,

Thanks for the reply. Unruly teenagers...egads ! You definitely got an early start. I have no idea where you reside, but do yourself a favor and try to catch him in concert sometime soon. This make not make sense...... even though the experience is not the same, it is the same, just from a different perspective.

I've really enjoyed your videos. Do you have any material of your own to present ?

Hi Dawnsminstrel,
Glad you made it over to say hello.
Your videos are great and I have really enjoyed listening to them.
You are very talented and it's hard to believe that you were such a shy teenager...lol
You seem very natural and at ease when you perform.:)

Anyway, welcome to the board and hope you can share your music with us and post often. There are lots of nice people here and quite a few talented musicians as well so you'll always have someone to talk guitars and music with.

Jesse Joe, thanks for finding this talented guy for us to watch. :)

Nightingale,

Thanks for the kind words. As for being shy. Well, I've never been all that shy about performing music. That was my one outlet. But I was shy with people, especially when they were beautiful young women. I'm almost embarrassed to tell you where I'm living now. I'm in Rochester NY and could easily drive to Toronto, and Massey Hall, "...in about three hours time." ---Sorry about the quotes, I can't help myself they just pop into my head straight out of the songs. I could have gone for his last series of concerts there if I'd had the money. It's a long story, but I've been digging myself out of debt for a while now and I have a hard time spending money.

RM,

I think it was you who asked about original material. I do have an instrumental piece that I wrote a long time ago, and I have a number of melodies for songs for which I haven't written decent lyrics. I have perfectionist tendencies and I've just never been very happy with the kind of lyrics I come up with. But, one of the reasons I decided to post to YouTube was in the hope that some listeners would start to ask for original material. I thought it might get the wheels turning. We'll see.

Thanks for the video and the requests. I'm especially glad you asked for The Gypsy. That's one I wanted to do anyway (I suppose in a way I want to do all of them!), but I like it when there's a request. I haven't gotten round to learning it yet, but I'll get there. If you don't mind, I'll list the gypsy and one others as your "official" requests in my request list on my channel page.

Oh, I forgot: about zooming in with the camera. I'd actually like to be a bit closer to the computer when I'm playing. Makes it easier to reach the keyboard. But there are two problems. First, it's a built in camera, so I can't really direct it, and second if I move closer, I can get my face in there better, but then the guitar is out of the frame. So I guess the two choices are my face and a little bit of guitar or keeping things as they are. I can experiment to see what works. Maybe I'll try that on my next video. Here's an awkward question: What's more interesting? My face or what my fingers are doing on the guitar? Oh, and whatever I do has to pass muster with my wife too! Too bad I can't do a split screen or something.

I played a very affordable sunburst Gretsch OM a couple of weeks ago. It was in the $300 price range, and was a great sounding, great playing guitar. I think with today's technology, spending thousands on high end guitars is a bit ridiculous, especially when you can buy one that sounds as good for 1/10th the price.

I don't have YouTube, but I have an account with MySpace with a few songs. I don't understand why you can't play clips right off my web site. Maybe they're rm format and you don't have Real Player? You can get a free version at real.com.

RM

Thanks for the remark. I find the greatest satisfaction in music comes from creating something new. The best approach is to just try one. There are songs I've written that I thought were rather poor, but were well-received. You never know.

Ok.....back on topic.

Hi DawnsMinstrel,
Shy but only with beautiful young women...lol.:)
Well, most women, even beautiful, young ones, can't resist a man singing a love song and playing a guitar:)
I hope you have found your dream girl by now:)

I can't imagine not being shy about performing...it's great that you aren't but I can't imagine anything more nerve wracking.

It seems as though most of the country is digging it's way out of debt these days...sigh...
Hope you get caught up and get to go to Toronto and sing with some of the other Lightheads at Massey. It would be great for you and all of us as well.

DawnsMinstrel
06-27-2008, 09:23 AM
Hi Nightingale,

well, not only with beautiful young women but they were (are?) at the top of the list. The stories I could tell you... but that would be off topic and I fear the wrath of RM. ;) I did meet my dream girl 4 years later in 1985. I figured out that she was my dream girl in 1986, and we've been together ever since.

As for not being shy about performing; I have to admit I've puzzled about it. I do sometimes get a little jittery but it passes very quickly. It might have rubbed off on me from my Dad. He's always wandering through the house singing totally unselfconsciously at the top of his lungs, often in silly voices. I do the same thing. Sometimes I'll come out of the shower and my wife will be cracking up over what she's been hearing.

As for debt-payment vs. Massey: I have to seriously think about this one. I'll be in Rochester only one more year, after which I'll be moving who knows where It may be my last opportunity to attend. Could be worth a few extra months of credit card payments.

Topic-wise: I hope to get another video posted tonight and hopefully at least one more over the weekend. I've started working on The Gypsy too.

cheers to all!

The Gypsy:) That will be a good one!
I love that song...well, I love pretty much all of them but that's going to sound really nice when you sing it.:)

Glad you got your girl and happy to hear that she puts up with your singing in the shower...lol.
That's funny about your Dad and the silly voices. I guess you picked it up more than you realized so it turned out okay for you both.

I hope things work out for you and Massey.
I just think it would be so much fun for you and the other musicians to meet and play together.
If I could play anything at all I would go and join in....lol.:) They always look like they are having so much fun...very joyful experience for all of them.

Have a good weekend:)

Okay then, I'll be adding Your Love's return. I absolutely love that song. Great chord progression. Such a real expression of remorse and love.

to all of you: because you have been so gracious in your response to my videos I am inspired to take my playing to the next level. The gypsy is going to have an interesting embellishment. It will take me a week or two to get it right, and I have to be out of town for a week coming up here soon, so you'll have to wait a bit. But I want to get it right for you.

Best wishes. DawnsMinstrel

Well, I am excited to hear "The Gypsy":)
It is interesting to hear all the different covers of various Lightfoot songs but that one doesn't get much notice. I am thinking that it might be one of the more difficult ones to play?

Take your time, we all know it will be well worth the wait, Tim.
All your offerings so far have been really wonderful and thanks for being so gracious as to take requests...very nice of you and very much appreciated:)

Hi Nightingale. Thanks so much. Another one is going up tonight. I'll let you be surprised. I'm not sure why The Gypsy doesn't get covered. It is not a difficult chord progression, but I guess it's maybe a little unusual in that it doesn't begin on it's tonic chord. So if you're trying to learn it by ear maybe that makes it a little hard. I don't know if there is any printed music for it, but if there is it shouldn't be too hard to learn. Maybe it just hasn't been heard that much. It's on an early album. But I'm with you. it's really neat song. I love the lyrics. They both profound a subtly humorous at once.

That sounds great, Tim
I love surprises:)

I am sure whatever you put up will be good:)

Yes, I guess The Gypsy wouldn't be one of his more well known songs.
He is one of those artists that you discover his music a little at a time.

I am still learning about him and all of his wonderful songs from the people here and I have a lot more to uncover. There is still a lot of his music that I don't have yet so I have a long way to go.

But, that's a good thing:) Always a new song to hear and a few more to love.
He is such a great talent and, as you say, many of his lyrics are very profound and subtly humorous at once.
He has a very wonderful way of singing about life and all of the experiences a person can have...he makes you believe that he has lived it all.

Who knows, maybe he has:)

The Gypsy

(F) Step inside my (Em) tent, said she, I'd (G) like to read your (Am) palm
(F) Leave the dollar (Em) in the jar, this (G) won't take very (A) long
(F) Leave the circus (Em) noise behind
(Dm) Close your eyes, re(Am)lax your mind
I'll (F) tell you if you (Em) should quit now or (G) if you should go (A) on

Then I said, (A11) "Now what do you see"
She said, (A) "deedly-dum, (A11) deedly-dee"
(A) "Where'll I go oh, (A11) what'll I be"
She said, (A) "deedly-dum, (A11) deedly-dee"
She threw some sawdust in the air and her hands began to shake
She told me the town where I was born and she almost knew the date
She lit a candle with her eyes and then she made the table rise
She took the dollar from the jar and then she guessed my weight
Then I said, "Now what do you see," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
"Your are so old, your are so wise, deedly-dum, deedly-die"
"Give me a sign, tell it to me," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
Then she spoke most quietly, oh, deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
When you were a child at school they taught you quite a lot
You were told when you should speak and when you should not
You were taught to read and write, to take your lessons home at night
A little knowledge serves you well but the golden rule does not
Then I said, "Now what do you mean," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
"Where'll I go, what'll I be," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
Then when I came home that night to lie awake in bed
I thought of that old gypsy and the words that she had said
And now I see with due respect, the more we learn the worse we get
So if you feel you've no regrets, go have your fortune read Then I said, "Now what do you mean," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
"Where'll I go, what'll I be," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
"Your are so old, your are so wise, deedly-dum, deedly-die"
"Give me a sign, tell it to me," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
"Where'll I go, what'll I be," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
"Your are so old, your are so wise, deedly-dum, deedly-die"
"Give me a sign, tell it to me," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"

Nice rendition and vocal range. I doubt if many others even attempt that song. My brain almost burst just thinking about using my cigarette-riddled lungs to perform it.

A couple of questions : What kind of gear are you using (mic, recording software, etc) ?

DawnsMinstrel
06-29-2008, 05:42 PM
Hi RM,

in my youth I narrowly escaped the lure of tobacco myself. Luckily I have a really low tolerance for dry mouth.

About my equipment. It's really very spare. I have a Fostex 8-channel multi-track digital recorder which I have pressed into service as a mixer. It also has some rudimentary effects and I haven't been shy about using the reverb. The mic I'm using came with it. The whole kit with headphones included cost about 300 US dollars circa 2004. To complete the hardware I have two 1/4" patch cables and a two - 1/4" mono to one 1/8" stereo adapter. This is how I interface with the computer. The computer itself is the one indulgence in luxury It's one of the newer iMac's with a built-in webcam. The software is just iMovie. All I do is send the audio to iMovie and record myself playing and singing simultaneously. The only editing I do is clipping the beginnings and endings, so that you don't have to watch me adjusting my seating position and saying things like "check" into the mic.

About the headphones: I've been advised by some not to wear them. The thing is I have a hearing impairment. It's a mild to moderate loss, but it's enough that I can't usually tell if I'm getting a good take without them. When I can get along without them I do. I'm in the process of getting myself some hearing aids. They're ungodly expensive which is why I haven't gotten them yet. I'm hoping when I get them in about another month I can dispense with the headphones. Thanks for the kind words. By the way, I have written an original song. I will be posting it within the next few weeks.

Thanks, jj, and I don't know if you noticed but I did try to move a bit closer to the camera. Good call. I think it's better this way

I certainly notice, Tim...much more captivating, in my opinion anyhow

I would even go a notch further actually, the triangle outlined by your eyebrows, your right hand and left hand is really where the magic is happening...there's nothing really going on at the top or bottom of your guitar or above your forehead so why not crop it out, again my preference only but since youtube is already limiting in quality and it's ability to emulate a live setting or full screen DVD quality viewing, I would creep in until it looks a bit ridiculous and then back off a bit...anyhow here's a screen capture framing of what I would suggest

now back to what really matters, the wonderful performance, Tim ... congrats on conquering that one...although I love to hear cover arrangements, there are a slew of Gord tunes I don't think anyone should attempt including this one, BUT I was wrong in this case, you conquered that whincing vocal... I've always thought it was one of the most lovely tunes I've ever heard ...I've always loved the bridge and I love your intro (same goes for your TWIF intro, very tasty)

cheers, thanks for this and have a good trip

DawnsMinstrel
07-01-2008, 12:31 PM
Thanks jj. I'm especially glad you like the intro work on this and TWIF. One can't always stick closely to the recorded arrangments (and some would say nor should one) when all you have is one guitar and one voice. So I guess where that's a lot of the creativity comes in, and you never now how it's going to play with your listeners.

I'm inclined to agree with you about framing the shot. It's a little difficult because I have equipment sitting around me, but I could be less lazy about how I arrange it I guess. When I get back from my trip I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for the suggestions. -Tim

Hi Pam, wow thanks for the primer on copyright! That's a lot of useful information. I really appreciate you taking time to write all of this. There is much in what you've written that I've never given much thought too especially regarding how registering copyright but never publicizing my music could conceivably deter efforts to protect my music. That had never occurred to me. The is very valuable and I thank you for your effort -- really!

I'm glad you like the song Anne and Ron. So far I've been getting uniformly positive feedback. It's very gratifying and encouraging. I'm very self-critical so to put in the effort to write a song means I have to believe that the effort is going to be worth it. You're all doing a lot to help me believe that it is. Even so, I don't mind a critique with some real points of criticism in it.

Ron - great assignment! I'll try to keep that in mind. Thanks!

Yeah that might be a cool idea as you build your catalog. Just like on albums, or at shows, most artists need to provide relief with some 'toe-tappers'. And it will broaden your potential audience. Tim, WOW man, THAT is the Right Stuff........I've not had dialogue with you so please excuse my lack of knowledge of your work, ( i think I saw you in youtube Lightfoot covers ...yes?) but do you have covers of Lightfoots I could listen to, and more importantly, more of your work to listen to ? That is a powerful song..... the line (if I heard it right..) of telling Laurriannie [sic] that the memory lives on [of her lost loved one] - did I get that right ? Well as I heard it, recently losing a loved one, really sank in...which seems one of the hallmarks of a good song to me, as a layman to song writing - that it reallty sinks in and grabs you by the yngs on something..... sure did....
Rock on man, keep 'em coming and recording..... yes if you have not been in the studio.... your home office their looks like mine down to the black filing cabinet...... you should indeed cut a CD - have you spoken wth Cathy Cowette of this ? Watching/listening to her success in personal, incremental apsirations with a first CD was very gratifying to know watch/see them via corfid and email, then watch them ascend to excellence..... you've got the stuff, man.

~geo Steve

PODUNK - on your well-thought on read of copyright law, I am only curious, I vaguely recall the subject of eminant domain and the public's ownership of a song after x number of years - does that number vary state-to-state as it does in the Boundary law end of *LAND* Surveying - as in someone can petition the courts for an adverse posession of a portion of a contiguous tract to theirs that they fenced in of the adjoining owner, encroaching, thow a few head of cattle on, build a shed, and then they must have satisfied about 7 rigourous criteria (and olddddd colonial times criteria at that - open and notorious, hostile, proof of improvement....continuous and uninterupted, etc etc) ?

But in music - does a song, say "America The Beautiful" become public domain in a state-by-state fashion as does the right to -attempt- adverse posession, with the music laws criteria, after the same x number of years in that state ? Or is it, as I suspect, being a federal registration, fall within the jurisprudence purvue of federal courts and law, and venue ? eg in 21 years Colorado, can someone simply start recording Tim's song capricuously along with ne'ery a worry of recourse ? - steve

DawnsMinstrel
08-07-2008, 09:46 PM
Hi Steve, I think the line you're remembering is "but the memories that still reside within his heart and mind, will remain within the many loves the old man leaves behind." Is that the one you meant?

Thanks for your kind remarks about the song. I don't know if you've looked through this thread. If you do you'll find some other videos I've made mostly of Lightfoot covers. To see everything I've posted you can go to YouTube and look up my channel. My YouTube screen name is "GordIsKing." "Laurianni" is at the moment the only original song that I've posted. I have one more I'm thinking of posting soon. I expect to continue posting as I have time to do so, and if you subscribe to my channel then you'll get a notice whenever I've posted something new (if you log into your own channel.)

I have exchanged a few words with Cathy here, but not about making cd's. I'm not there yet. I don't have enough original material that I like well enough to record. I would very much like to make a cd some day though, and since I've started posting videos and getting the kind of positive feedback, like the kind you and others have given above, I'm starting to feel like I ought to work harder toward that goal.

Thanks again for your kind words Steve, and I'm very sorry for your loss.

Best wishes - Tim

Podunk:

Yes thanks for correcting my twist from Boundary Law coursework - Eminant Domain - as I mis-stated at the top of my p.s. to you, as I am sure you know better than I, is when the U.S. Goverment can, when deemed in the public best interest ( with the ideology that "highest and best use" - [for the most people] land use/planning agencies espouse) make forced use of, shall we say - politely , and recompensed, -taking- , and paying for with "fair maket value" of a person's private land or chattels thereon, et al - for purposes that benefit needs of the masses -

eg the Federal Interstate Highways act - I-25 in Denver when it plowed through Denver, ripping out hundreds of homes, businesses, old planimetric features, and replaced it with the 10-lane wonder we have now that is -seemingly- yearly being ripped up and widened and HOV'd and , well, you name it - curent project with enough money assigned it ,it has an acronym - project T-REX, to make way for light-rail (yeayy!) through Denver , long overdue .

I understand the philosophy of eminant domain as it applies... versus Public Domain, but correct you are, as I noted lower in the post you refer to - the more applicable term in my question of music - Public Domain, of course.... I agree for sure. Slip'o the tongue/memory/keyboard on the first opener with eminant domain.

And, that "eminant domain" was further in the national interest with the Interstate act's primary reason - post WWII and Pearl Harbour - not to mention the lesser known ground invasion on the west coast - Aleutian Islands in Alaska and futher down the PAcific Coast, the Act's intent was primarily to provide a raised (so they cold see enemy troops or equipment) highway subtantial enough, and unintterupted by stop-lights, for the primary purpose of being able, in a national emergancy again, on the mainland, to mobilize the heavy defense machine thousands of miles as necessary without stopping except to commandeer gas, etc....

...that we may never again be caught defenseless in a given area without the ability to mobilize heavy troups and equip by instertate to the area of..entaglement.... one of Dwight Eisenhower's later great dreams realized - along with the (here I go) U.S National Mapping Program - mapping the whole country at 7.5 minute quadrangle intervals - sometimes 15 minute.....also for primarily military purposes - on what we call colloquially "quads" - or "topos" in the U.S. are typically these Federal Maps sold at cost recovery.

And to keep map talk short, one more ort from the program - the quads...contour maps AND lesser known planimetric maps of the country ( still being done first run maps in ALaska) employ a principle that, in Char's hyperlinks to Shelton's works, turned up a mis-statement by the academician that wrote on one of the papers she found - speaking of the ability in quadrangle maps to hide certain quantities of features and/or troups - had the number wrong - the USGS Rules and Reg's for The NMP call for "woodland tint" - the green on topos in amorphous patches - is called for when a "troup" of 12 men/woman soldiers could hide in one square mile.

Stated otherside - the vegetation/woods are dense enough that on average - very interprative photogrammetric work- a troup could disperse and hide in that square mile. Course, it seves us hikers well, too in navigating by map. I did my internship/extership in Mapping and Geodetic Surveying at U.S.G.S in Lakewood, at the Federal Center - old bldg 25..and the old Forest Service Bldg # 42- that also encompassed the third aspect of my intern and exterships - the BLM aerial photo lab, was in old bldg 42 , too, for Denver'ites familiar with the Federal Center city-within-a-city.

In addition to the first mis-statement I had you pointed out of eminant domain, I'd add that the term applies only when Federal entities are involved, or are grabbing up or commandeering land, homes, businesses, supplies, even situations -resulting in martial law commonly. And it is one of the four rights we do not "get" or convey - when we sell or buy property in US, even with fee simple absolute deed and title.... the right of eminant domain, escheat, estoppel, and Police Power. My old Boundary Law Professor would be proud :) .

And when one -private- party attempts adverse posession - thought to be easy - but in court, it is not.....is not intrinsically anything to do with eminant OR Public Domain, unless the feds are one of the contiguous parties or "legal persons" .

My question to you - I am still curious of - Podunklander - is still, do the states' number of years for their statute of limitations - varying state by state, apply in any way to where a person writes/publishes/establishes their date of original work? I think by virtue of inference from what you kindly wrote - the answer is emphatically - "no" - musicians' copyright factors are all Federal , national purvue and office questions, laws, and answers, not the Jeffersonian principle of states checks and balances of power versus Federal..., so the state laws or point of origin -or- travesty thereof, have no legal bearing - its all federal law and license.

I think i get that answered intrinsically from what you wrote. And, consequentially - state's statutes of limitation have no bearing on a strictly federal matter in the case of music then, like Tim's song and work..have I got it ?. OK....

Thanks !

DawnMinstrel - yes, thats the line...that grabbed by the yangs.... thanks....WHAT A WONDERFUL SONG.

And... thank you, for the condolances...very much.. I hear lines in verse now more than ever of loved ones, or love....lost. Gordon seems a master of this. And you seem well on your way.... to songwriting master that is of such.

I am sure you will get enough material to do a CD. If I understand correctly - Gord would deliberately take "sabatticals" for wrinting purposes - to England, canoeing, renting a farm house, etc. Do you have the surroundings that you could, as is germane to your choses subject matter, take a day.. in the woods.... in the snow.... in the city.... in Human Services centers - where "Home from the Forests" can be seen daily..... ?
Just a thought - from one who knows NOTHING about writing songs....

Steve, so far my songwriting gets done mostly in my living room. I love the idea of a canoe trip though. Wow, been a long time since I've done something like that. But more to the point, you're right. Gord is very disciplined about his writing and makes a point of going off by himself and enforcing some solitude expressly for the purpose of getting some writing done. This is something I have not tried, but it's worth considering.

Tim, had a few songwriters over this past week... at one point I showcased your tune

well, they suggested that you change your youtube account ID to ' TimisKing ' :)

hey, I'd rather you invest time in your original works but if you come into a dry spell, dont forget to fall back into whittling away at the Gypsy

besides, noodling away any cover may segue right into an 'influenced' yet original composition

good luck with the happy song, tough stuff

ps) was just playing one for my kid (he walked out not even halfway through, oh well...) 'clap your hands clap your hands and sing a happy song, clap your hands clap your hands and try to sing along...' but I cannot find it online, anyone know of a kid song catalogue?

Hi jj. Thanks for showing your song-writing friends my song and for passing along their good impressions. It has literally taken me about 3 decades to be brave enough to actually let other people hear songs that i write. Don't know why it's so hard for me, but it's getting easier.

it so happens I was in the middle of writing some song lyrics when I stopped to check in here. (Sorry to say they aren't happy!) But I really do want to get around to doing the Gypsy. I like that song a lot and I've been neglecting my GL covers. I wish I had more time to work on this stuff.

But I sure appreciate everyone's encouragement here. It all keeps me thinking about song-writing. I'm planning on posting another original soon.

sorry I can't help you with the children's songs.

jj . - I have one idea that'll almost surely have 'em - the kids songs anyway. Its a few minutes of phone work - And my wife use to handle all this stuff; she'd volunteer in the elementary where my daughter was in class "OMG my MOM is the room, how EMBARRASING" lol - that did not happen until around 5th - 'preen age, and its self-consioucness.

Well, my wife would find childrens song books when Mamie was in kindergarden and 1st grade I recall, and Mamie was happy to have her comforting mother there - and the intrinsically "2nd mom" nature of a GOOD elementary school teacher, notably in grades K - 2 or 3.

Anyway - Merry was given reference as to where she got them, turns out for us they were available in the lending library, but could be bought in big-box book stores too like Border's, Barnes & Noble, and no doubt of course Amazon.com and whats the other on-line book source ? can't remember. But to find out where to buy locally in person, my wife found that principal of the school she teacher-aided in , and the librarian(s) in the K-6 schools as well, would be able to cite their purchasing course, if not a big bookstore, and borrwing from the library is insufficient...

The 2 ladies I mention in school above where Mamie went knew the sources - I'd just call an Elementary school in your area, in a good area.... only because they tend to have better resources, sadly, and b morelikely to know. Ours did. Good luck. Didn't mean to "butt-in" in this exchange with what I hope are not painfully obvious no-sh** ideas, but maybe, without K-6 experience in the school, as my wife had, these things would not otherwise occur to you or me.

"Have a Gord day..., and Gord day to you" lol I gotta program that

Such a beautiful song and you have captured the mood of it perfetly. :)

nice and neat, nice and neat.
Don't miss any spots now, don't miss any spots now...
Brush, brush, brush. Brush, brush brush."

terrific, pam ...but to update it, you need to add a line about flossing

flossing is either a pretty new thing or I grew up totally ignorant to this requirement

I grew up thinking floss was something you just ate lots of at the carnival:)

anyhow, considering my lack of flossing, my teeth haven't turned out half bad..ok, maybe just 1/4, lol

btw, jr turned 4 recently...he likes lullabies and sad tunes (jim reeves is a fave)

steve, awesome post also...very helpful guys...I'm just trying to learned 'A Your Adorable...' somehow I grew up never hearing that tune before

and tim, what else can i say....beeeeeeautiful!

ps) jerre heskew's (Cumberland Trio) 'Lion Named Sam' is a fun tune to play & sing

Thanks Anne and jj. Glad you liked the cover. Sometimes I think I've got a lot of nerve trying to cover Lightfoot tunes, but it's not because I think I can do them justice so much as I just love the songs so much. Anyway, The Gypsy is coming along nicely and I'll probably be recording it pretty soon, but I have another original I might post first. I'm sorry I can't contribute to the discussion on children's tunes. I have no kids. Actually, come to think of it, I just thought of an old song my mom used to sing to me when I was a little boy. The words are:

I love to watch the streetcars
go up and down each track
the people at the windows smile at me as they go passed
so many many people
get off and on each car
I wonder where they're going
I wonder who they are

It's a bit out of date though. No streetcars so far as I know anymore.

Not sure about that but the cable cars in San Francisco do a fairly good imitation, and work well as a visual for a video of the song.

Tim,

I am so bummed - my flat LCD plasma monitor is out, (with speakers), amd I hoooked up my old honker 17' CRT tube monstrosity, and can't here a thing.... no little speakers.... I can't hear your version of "Beautiful" ! That was my wife and my "song".... dang it... and I CAN'T LISTEN TO YOUTUBE , either now..... I think it is why I am so cranky lately. But keep 'em coming... I remember my guitar teacher ( who I stared at more-than practiced for, she was 18, I was 17... an older woman...lol) and she taught me beautiful, and had this generalized remark to say about Lightfoot music on the guitar . Do you agree ? - She said his music, Beautiful being a prime example, is frought with "minor 7's" - and in Beautiful -"D minor 7's" true - or was I to entranced by her long black hair....lol

Thanks Patti!

Steve - Very sorry about your LCD monitor. That's a bummer. I hope you can get it replaced soon. If it's any comfort I have no plans to take my videos down anytime soon. About the minor 7th's; yes there are a lot of minor 7th's in at least some of Lightfoot's tunes. It really depends on the kind of song. But minor 7th chords are pretty standard. They're all over the place in jazz for example. James Taylor uses them a lot too. Maybe not so common in blues and rock though. Strictly speaking, the minor 7th chords in "Beautiful" are B minor 7th and E minor 7th. This is because of the capo at the second fret. If you play it from the nut of the guitar rather than capoed at fret 2 then the chords are A minor 7th and D minor 7th. (I'm picky about this, you have to go by the pitch). But I'm pretty sure Gord plays it capoed. I'll have to check that. I like your story about your guitar teacher. I don't know how you could concentrate on the lesson enough to remember anything aside from the long black hair! That sounds pretty entrancing to me.

Great job on "Beautiful" as always !

And I just listened to "Laurianni"... My good man you have 'SUPER TALENT' ! What a beautiful song, words & music !!! :headbang:

Do keep it up... It sounds like a song that the great little songwriter 'Paul Simon' would write. He must be one of your influences ? :)

 Thanks Jesse Joe! Glad you liked the original. Yes, I guess it's probably fair to say that Paul Simon is an influence. In fact, I'm currently working on another original that's probably even more influenced by him than this one is, though I don't consciously try to channel him (or anyone else) when I'm writing. I'm really just trying to use language that appeals to me. Then again, Paul Simon probably has something to do with what language I find appealing. Anyway, thanks for posting!

Is this cutaway, another Martin ??

You definetly have some great talent in writing, and as I said before in some earlier post your playing is very very good !

You should have a CD made of your songs, so more people could hear them. :)

Another excellent effort. Pretty tune.

Wondering........do you find that the music evokes the lyrics, or do the lyrics come first ? Does that make sense ?

(by the way, I'm still waiting for that "happy song")

DawnsMinstrel
09-01-2008, 11:17 AM
Thanks to both of you.

Jesse Joe: yes it's another "Martin," but I put that in quotes because it's one of their budget models. It's called a "DCX1E" and is made mostly of formica. Considering how cheap it is, it sounds pretty good, but it doesn't compare to the real thing. But I wanted a cutaway and it's the best I could do budget-wise. Someday I'll buy something better to replace it with. I've been using it lately because the D-35 has some serious problems that make it difficult to work with for recording and once again - no money to have it fixed. :( About the cd. I've been wanting to make one for a long time now. The reason I haven't is because I have so few songs to put on it that are my own. I've been simultaneously both very picky and very lazy about writing. The reason I decided to start posting originals is in the hope that the feedback I get might spur me on to write more (or alternatively convince me that I should stop!) If I can get 10 or so songs that I think are recordable then I'll start looking into making a cd. Your kind words help a lot in convincing me to keep trying.

RM - My own experience is that the song turns out better when I write the music first then look for words to match. This particular song's melody was something I came up with years ago, believe it or not, and I just waited until I was satisfied with the words that I finally found for it. I have other wordless melodies like it that are still waiting for their lyrics. The words and music for Laurianni arose simultaneously except for the bridge. In the case of the bridge the words came first, then I had to find something for it that matched the mood of the verses without imitating them too closely. But by then I had something to go on.

I still see myself as a song writing novice because I have so few finished songs that I feel are worth sharing. I'm waiting for a few more before I'm willing to start calling myself a "song writer." But I think my chances of becoming a decent one have improved since I started posting songs and getting the encouraging feedback that you two and others have sent. Thanks for that!

Tim

Join the human race.......trying to write songs is a "weird" experience. John Prine once said that "the best ones are the ones that take as long to write as they do to play". He also pointed out that those were few and far between.

Do us a favor.........share one of those (in your estimation) "sub-par" tunes, and see what response you get. You may be right, but you might be wrong.

Well, to be honest, there aren't many of these either, and some of them have melodies that I want to reuse with other lyrics. The fact is that over the years I've just avoided even trying much of the time. We'll see ...

Not at all Jess Joe! I actually kind of prefer it when you do it. It seems to be kind of a tradition. hi Tim
thanks SO much...i'm excited that I'll be listening to this tonight (when I get to my other computer that has 'full' speakers)

in the meantime, visually, that's a very natural looking guitar, nice (or it it just different lighting perhaps)....also, i want your barber and personal trainer's number...you're looking even better than usual, man

jj (note: straight male, lol)

DawnsMinstrel
11-10-2008, 02:16 PM
lol.. thanks jj. About the guitar, it's a martin DCX-1E. It's actually a budget guitar. I wanted a cutaway/acousto-electric and didn't have a lot of money to spend. This is a "Martin product" in that it carries the martin name but is mass-produced and made mostly out of formica believe it or not. It sounds and looks surprisingly good considering all this, but of course it's not as nice as the D-35. The reason I'm using it is because the D-35 has problems that I can't afford to fix right now and that make recording with it really difficult. I was putting up with it there for a while but just got tired of it.

As for my personal trainer: I don't have one. But I've been on a low-carb diet lately that has done wonders and I'm running 3 or so miles a day several days a week. My barber is a middle-late-aged chinese woman who works at a chain hair salon the name of which escapes just now. I paid 15 bucks for that cut. Thanks for noticing.
