Hey Jesse Joe, I've noticed that you sometimes post newspaper clippings of Gord articles. They copy great and of course, I'm a collector of all things Gord. In other words, feel free to post others of your probable vast collection. I'd certainly appreciate it.
T.C.
Anyone here can post old clippings, {etc} of our guy if you wish too...
Might be interesting to discover more about: 'Gordon Lightfoot' !!! :)

Lightfoot at 40 !
Jesse Joe,
I find these to be fascinating......thanks for sharing them.
I'm especially taken by the Peter Goddard article that attempts to delve into his psyche. It's kind of eerie, but it also correlates with my perception of Lightfoot at that time. Was/is Peter Goddard a well respected journalist ?

Your very welcome RM, Im glad you find these old articles fascinating, and Im happy to post them. Im sure there are others that have lots to share also, hope they do. As for Peter Goddard, I know nothing about him. Google might have something though ?

Hey Pam, do you mean Marilyn Mackay's Autogragh ?
Assuming I have the right Peter Goddard, he is definitely accomplished :

I think you got the right Peter Goddard. Because the article for Gord turning 40 was in Maclean's Magazine.

Gord as Bank Teller..
What do teenagers know anyway ?
This has to be one of the best threads ever.......As a 19-20 year old, I struggled to find any info at all on this mysterious artist whose music touched home somewhere. Again, I appreciate the enlightenment.

I posted this one before - you might have missed it.
It's written by Lightfoot himself.

Hey Pam, do you mean Marilyn Mackay's Autogragh ?
The blurb for the Junos "St. Elsewhere's manic medic, Howie Mandel". I still miss that show (well, except for one episode that left me horrified). It took me a long time before I could sit through an episode of ER because it's such a ripoff of St. Elsewhere.

charlene
03-25-2008, 10:41 AM
JJoe- there should be an option to turn the scan clockwise or counter-clockwise before you save it..little arrows or something..then you don't have to scan 2x..
I found that out after I'd scanned lots of things for Florian that he has here at "Char's Vault"..
lol
Jesse Joe
03-25-2008, 11:00 AM
Yes I know Char and that's exactly what Im doing. You see I scan the entire page from my photo albums, because there are some articles that I cant remove without damaging them. And I can only place the photo album pages one way on the glass scanner. So I scan some twice that have articles positioned in 2 directions on the same page. And then I click either right, left or 180 degrees. I hope you understand what Im trying to say here...
Jesse Joe
03-25-2008, 11:05 AM
I think Char's treasure vault should be posted here. Notice Char there are 2 you did not turn clockwise... :)

Thanks JJ for the scans-they also answered my "speech impediment" question on another post.
FYI for less experienced computer users who are viewing the articles, if you hold down the "CTRL" button and hit the + or - buttons, the browser will zoom in or out, allowing you a closer look. Or if your mouse has a dial built in you can use that instead of the + or -.
Jesse Joe

Thanks Next Saturday,
I always have to double right click my mouse, in order for those scans to be readable. But I didn't know about the "CTRL" button and hit the + or - buttons.
I tried it and you can bring the image very close and way far, but I find it's not as sharp as only clicking the mouse twice. May be only me though ?
But it's something new for me, thanks again for sharing this. :)

Nice to see the newspaper clippings. I'm not one to save newspaper clippings but once like 12-15 years ago, I clipped one about this place in Superior that was planning on making a place for outdoor concerts. I think I still have it stashed away. Later Gordon Lightfoot played there. I don't even know why I clipped it. I might have been having some kind of a premonition. They don't even have concerts there anymore.
I thought the "Relaxing With Lightfoot" article was quite enjoyable. The writer is an obvious fan, and presents his thoughts with a great sense of Canadian pride ("the man is what he is, and he is one of us").
He mentions 'new' songs from Shadows. The only single that got radio play in my parts was "Baby Step Back". How about in Canada ?
Jesse Joe

Ok.......it's time to admit I'm totally confused........
Jesse Joe, the latest clippings were enlarged and easier to read. With all of your clippings, when I click on them I get a 'magnifying glass' pointer to enlarge them. The last ones start out larger. It's an improvement for my eyes.
On my end, with the "Ctrl + or - ", the forum text enlarges, but not the clippings.
Jesse Joe
03-25-2008, 03:23 PM
This is the best way I can explain this. If the photo is too large I have to set my resolution at a lower number. They usualy scan at 100, some I have to bring it down to 75 or it wont fit, so it tells me your photo is too large. At 100 it's perfect when you use the magnifying glass 2nd click. Ive been able to use 100 for the latter ones. But the first bunch are all 75. John Fowles would probably explain this better. For me Im not a computer wizard. And this scanning thing to me is very new... I place the photo's to be scanned, and hope for the best. {lol}

Sorry for being late,
But here is an answer to that last question Ron M... Here in Canada they played "Baby Step Back" quite a bit, and I seem to remember hearing "Blackberry Wine" from time to time. But it was {B S B} that made it up the charts, never made it to #1, but it got a lot of air play.
I scanned the pic again, "Relaxing With Lightfoot."

re: Article about Illness..- I remember speaking with Barry before the show in Orillia at a side door where he was having a butt with some venue staff a couple of hours before showtime. He told me that Gord wasn't feeling well and had driven himself up to Orillia from home and was in a lot of stomach pain when he got out of the car in the Opera House parking lot. Barry thought it might be food poisoning because he wasn't feeling great himself..they had taken him over to the Orillia Soldier's Memorial Hopsital to be checked over..
We went down the street for dinner and came back about 45 minutes before showtime..Shortly after that a staff member of the Opera House came out and announced the show had been postponed due to illness..We milled around for quite a long time with a few other fans..sort of in shock and worry..forms were handed out in case we wanted to submit them for ticket refunds..when it got dark we headed back home to Whitby...oblivious to what was really happening..

It was a very sad time for all of Canada in my opinion. The other day I listened to that 590 interview Gord & Barry Keane gave just before the holidays. And to hear Barry Keane say that one nurse told him when they lifted him for Hamilton Ontario, she didn't think he was gonna make it to Hamilton... Thank goodness he battled it.
Char on the photo of the Auditorium in Orillia, is it that the building that today is named after Gord ?

Great pics Charlene, thanks for posting them. :)

yes - he told the audience at Massey that Meredith put that HAPPY FACE sticker on his guitar..
I have no idea about the black patch..perhaps I'll remember and ask him in May..
or not remember..

That patch, most likely, is to keep his belt buckle from digging into the wood on the guitar. I've seen other guitar and banjo players use them for just that purpose.

It is really your thread, since it was your idea for these articles. :headbang: ;) Last checked 1907 views... Maybe wasn't a bad idea after all... :)
Im happy if some of you guys enjoy them. I have been collecting anything I was ever able to find about this great Poet Genius since discovering his music in 1969. "Black Day In July," is the first song I heard of him, and was hooked.
Before owning a computer and discovering this board, I really thought I was the only big fan he had, pretty crazy since Gordon sang all over the world. Made an Axx of myself because of it. Thinking no one else could possibly know as much about Lightfoot than me.
This group which I think is like a family of Lightheads is really wonderful, and they have taught me a whole lot about ~gl~ that I did not know. Great people fine folks, all sharing great admiration for this super Canadian singer songwriter. :)
Hey Jessie Joe, do you have the publication (the sounding board) from Martin Guitar that features Gords D-18GL?
Tony
Jesse Joe
04-12-2008, 02:42 PM
Yes I do Tony ! However the entire publication is not about the D18-GL signature guitar, if that is what you meant. The one I have only has a small article on that particular guitar, which I posted a few pages back, page # 4 to be exact. :)
Jesse Joe, I did see that article on page 4. What I have shows Gord on the front page along with George Jones. Then page 9 is all Gord and the D18GL. The reason I'm asking is that I have an extra copy of it. If you do not have it and would like me to send it to you, PM me your address.

The Canadian Press
TORONTO
When Canada decided to boycott the 1980 Moscow Olympics, Jay Triano couldn't fathom the thought of another four years spent sweating in the gym to get back to the Games.
So he returned to Simon Fraser University -- to play football.
Triano, now an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors, and Leo Rautins, Canada's national men's coach and a Raptors TV analyst, were both members of the Olympic men's team that never made it to Moscow.
The decision to stay home became a defining moment in their careers. Rautins would never play in an Olympics. Triano lost interest in basketball for a while.
Now, amid rumblings about boycotts of this summer's Beijing Olympics, both say they believe skipping Moscow may have been the wrong call.
"It served no purpose,'' Rautins said. "In my opinion, it accomplished nothing. The athletes basically became the pawns and it really didn't do anything. Everything we did for four years was to gear up for that, and then all of a sudden it was gone.''
Recent bloodshed in Tibet has human rights activists and some politicians calling for a boycott of the Beijing Olympics.
Pro-Tibetan activists held a rally on Parliament Hill demanding a Canadian boycott, although Canadian Olympic Committee officials have said they're not considering it.
The Belgian government, though, has said it wouldn't rule out a boycott, while French president Nicolas Sarkozy suggested boycotting the opening ceremonies was a possibility.
In 1980, U.S. President Jimmy Carter led calls for an international boycott of the Moscow Games to protest the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan. Canada's then-Liberal government supported Carter along with the opposition Conservatives, and on April 23, then-external affairs minister Mark McGuigan told the House of Commons that Canada would not participate in the Games.
"We were at the qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico when we started hearing about the different rumblings,'' Triano said. "I think it was right before our final game, and we had already secured a spot (for the Olympics), when we heard there was a good chance we would not be going.
"The thing that bothered me is . . . the Afghanistan athletes (11 of them) went to the Olympics in Moscow,'' Triano added. "We thought what (the Russians) were doing was wrong, but the country they were doing it to didn't think it was wrong enough not to send their athletes to the Games.''
Men's basketball, coached by the late Jack Donohue, was the only Canadian team that qualified for Moscow. When the Canadians pulled out, Brazil was bumped up to take their spot.
"By many accounts, that might have been one of the best teams Canada's ever had, so we were pretty optimistic that we could win a medal,'' Rautins said.
"We peaked at the right time, we had gone to Puerto Rico for the Olympic qualifying tournament, got on a little bit of a roll,'' Triano said. "Who knows what would have happened? We definitely had something pretty special at the time.''
Instead of battling for a medal in Moscow, the Canadians were flown to Toronto and put up at the Royal York Hotel for two days. They were feted with a dinner, offered tickets to a hockey game and attended a concert in their honour featuring Gordon Lightfoot and Harry Chapin.
Small consolation

This was in my newspaper in April 09, made me think of you all. Maybe some of you have not seen or read it elsewhere ? :)

Err Umm Just who is this "Jesse Joe"
Character??
Today 20 June he posts a new clipping to a thread he last contributed to in April 2008,bold as brass with absolutlely no word of explanation for his long absence
His most recent posting before the 19th of June was way back on December 10th.2008 3 postings on that day in fact.Since then he aparently indicated to one corfidler that he no longer had internet access and moreover he has steadfastly ignored Private Messages seeking to find out if he was still breathing.
If he should deign to look in his inbox there should be three unanswered PMs (Private Messages Mr Hutchison )from me alone the last one with the subject title
"Have You Passed Away or what?
And a numbet of his friends here such as Nightingale. Patti and myself have been concerned about his welfare but other than by PMs or emails and even the odd snail mail via a known friend we have no means of communicating
with him in circumstances where he decides with no warning to go Absent WithOut Leave
I seriouly consider that he should offer some explanation
PDQ and/or et/ou toute de suite
comme ils dites

Jesse Joe...:) It's so nice to see you back here, my Canadian friend!
Now, I am not sure if I should smack you or hug you :) Okay...it's a big hug :)
Sir John, ignore the pm that I sent you telling you that I am sure Jesse Joe is okay and hasn't passed away...just doing other things these days...lol.
Little did I know.................
