Coldwater is a short distance from Orillia.. zoom out on the map at the page linked below.
In Summertime Dream there's mention of a mill and a stream...
Coldwater could still be classified as a lunch pail town in a one horse way..
;)
this mill is still operational:

That's kind of what I pictured when I hear the song. ;)

I would think that is what the song is about. A good question to ask him on your next interview or when you see him in May Charlene ! :)

"In the valley below where the river winds
There's no such thing as bad times
And a soft southern flame
Oh Cotton Jenny's her name
She wakes me up when the sun goes down
And the wheel of love goes 'round" ~gl~
"Where the road runs down by the butternut grove
To old Bill Skinner's stream
Do tell at the noonday bell
It's time for a summertime dream
Birds in all creation will be twittering in the trees
And down below's a pond I know
You can swim in it if you please
And if you come 'round when the mill shuts down
You can see what chivalry means
Let's steal away in the noonday sun
It's time for a summertime dream" ~gl~
I always pictured a small mill as it was probably powered by Bill Skinner's "stream" and not some river so the Coldwater ON mill seems to fit the bill. Others that came to mind were the Elora Gorge Mill in Elora Ontario which now operates as an inn. Having stayed there overnight, I had my own 'Summertime Dreams'. Elora is pretty much a "Lunch pail town in a one horse way" situated on the banks of the Speed River if I recall.
The other mill is Roblin's mill located at Black Creek Pioneer Village in Toronto. Again, seems somewhat too large to fit the images conjured up in 'Summertime Dream'.
If not the Coldwater mill then something like McConnell's Mill in Pennsylvania. After all, I don't think that Gord specified it was a Canadian Mill.:)

ah but wee Gord talks of the imagery of his youth and growing up around Orillia and the places around town always finding their way into his songs.. fishing in the creeks, morel hunting with dad in the woods, riding his bike out of town..Coldwater would be a lovely bike ride, even today, for a young lad looking for adventure..
