Thanks! I enjoyed hearing these songs very much. The Fast Freight song reminds me of the time I rode on a freight train from Spooner to Superior when I was 18. It was a car with a big open door on the side. The car rocked. It was a little scarey, but later I had some coffee up toward the front of the train.
The Dark As A Dungeon song reminds me of one of my best friends whose husband works in a coal mine.

The first time I heard "Dark As A Dungeon" it was by Johnny Cash, great song. :)

Yes, it is a great song. I didn't know it was by Johnny Cash. I would like to read that book he mentioned reading in The Man Comes Around booklet called Dreaming of the Queen. I like what he dreamt about Queen Elizabeth ll saying that he was like a thorn tree in a whirlwind.

Hey Patti,
Johnny Cash did it, but it was written by Merle Travis. :)

Right you are joveski...Many including Dylan have recorded 'Dark As A Dungeon'. But I was only trying to clarify the guy who wrote it... Merle Travis. :)

Up until tonight(1/30/08)I had never heard this before.Whats really interesting to me is:
throughout the years,Gordon's basic style/sound really hasn't changed all that much.
If anyone knows where I can get copies of The Two Tones albums, please let me know.

I beg to differ with you! In the early years, Gord's style was different; more an interpretation of then popular music styles. There is nothing in the style of his 1962 Chateau studio recordings that suggest the style he would develop soon after. On this record, Two Tones, the style is 50s/60s folk, not "Gord", except for one song, Dark As A Dungeon. In that one song, we hear for the first time (on record) what I consider to be Gord's unique singing style. Then, in about a year, the first Gord-penned songs in his songwriting style start to emerge. I have always thought that Echoes Of Heroes was the first one of those, but I don't know the exact dates that the songs written in 1963 were penned.
As an aside, in a live performance in the mid 1970s (Toronto Rolling Thunder, where Gord also performed), Dylan sings Dark As A Dungeon and introduces it by saying it is dedicated to Gord. An interesting comment, isn't it? Dylan too considers that song to be something special relative to Gord.
Two Tones was released on two record labels, Chateau and Canatel. You will see copies auctioned at Ebay from time to time. And, sad to say, you will also see home-made CDRs available there as well.

Definitely 50s. Here's a link to Cliff Richard's version:

not sure if it's on youtube but somewhere in the basement archive i have merle travis performing dark as a dungeon and a bunch of his other works plus him chatting about and demonstrating his influential guitar technique
i agree, val, echos of heroes - i also agree with pattibear, when the term 'style' used loosely
jjo, not to be anal (this site's never lacked this:) ), but i think it's spelled Whelan, RIP
cheers

In the Intimate & Interactive show on Much More Music, when Gord was ask who did he like as a guitar player, he mentioned Merle Travis & Red Shea. Also said there was a lot of good music coming from eastern Canada. Pretty smart guy that Gord eh ! :)

After digesting the whole Village Corner meal, my two new favs are This Is My Song and Summer Love. This duo kind of reminds me of the Fred Neil/Vince Martin album, Tear Down The Walls. Anybody remember that one? It's out on Collectors Choice, I believe.
Jessie Joe, thanks for dinner.
