Hypothetically speaking (sorry if I got your hopes up but I couldn't help myself ;) ):

If there were to be a CD released of Gordon Lightfoot love songs, and assuming you were invited to choose one and only one song to be included on that CD, what would it be? My first choice would be:

1. Softly

Jesse Joe

Thank You For The Promises :)

Thankfully, via the Wonderment of the Digital Domain,
there exists such an album;

Thankfully, I've been blessed to select the music;

Each song crossfades into the next; as

The Suite begins and ends with: *I'm Not Supposed to Care*

The Aspects of Love expressed betwix the album's first tone and final fade,
just happen to be each of your selections . . . even those to come.

John, I absolutely agree. I LOVE his version, it gives me goose bumps every time, and if it's good enough for Gord himself to include on what was I believe his very first album which was titled "Lightfoot" then it is certainly good enough to include in our collection of lovesongs. I will add it as your personal choice.

I will not be satisfied until one other song is included, so we'll see if anyone comes up with it.

Jesse, I very much like the photo of Gord on the cover.

Thanks for the warm & fuzzies everyone. Here's the new list:

1. Softly (Gitchigumee)
2. Thank You For The Promises (Jesse Joe)
3. If I Could (RM)
4. If You Need Me (Claudia)
5. The Last Time I Saw Her Face (mnmouse)

12. My Love For You (Borderstone)
13. Shadows (Tim)
14. Song for a Winter's Night (Brannah)

I'd be interested in more info regarding the "Anything For Love" album (words by Gordon Lightfoot, music by David Foster). Here I go again showing my ignorance (please be kind).

Actually, "Anything for Love" is not an album. It's a song from the "East of Midnight" album. I believe it was the first single released off the album, as I recall it getting some radio play before "EOM" was released. It was indeed a collaboration between Foster and Lightfoot.

But then...is that photo not of an albumn cover?

And if it is a photo of an existing album, then who sings the songs if only the words are GL's and the music is DF's? And why would GL be on the cover if he wasn't the one singing the darn songs?:eek::eek:

OHHHHH... it's a photo from sheet music isn't it? Light bulb!

Well back in the day.......singles (or 45 rpms) would be released with artwork/photos. Maybe Jesse Joe can say whether or not this is the actual single sleeve that was released. I always just waited for the album to come out. But it could be a sheet music photo......or it could be a photo-shopped picture.

There is no "Anything for Love" album.

OK I expect everybody has at one time or another wanted to burn their own favo(u)rite's CD and as far as I know it is perfectly legal to make your own compilation CD from favourite tracks on CDs that you own. but not to then distribute it of course. Now as anybody who has tried to make such a compilation, whether on a CD or a cassette tape, as the redoubtable Sober Rodent once reported on at L E N G T H, knows the problem is totting up the Total Running Time in order to decide which tracks will fit on a chosen tape or nowadays a standard 74 minute blank CD. (In passing note that IF your favourite track is Beethoven's 9th symphony you are in luck because the reason why the length capacity of a CD is 74min is that that is the "outer limit" of the time it takes for an orchestra to play that masterpiece.
at least that is what the Compact Disk Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_disc) would have you believe!!
I was sure there must be some program to tell you this without having to create a specialised spreadsheet I knew that Nero burning actually helpfully tells you the TRT of a selection as you load it up viz:-
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/mp3_quality/nero.jpg
But what I really wanted a method that could be used earlier in the process, besides other burning programs work differently, for example Roxio tells you the remaining time on the CD after you select a group of audio tracks
I frequently googled to find something but the best I found was a Java applet that entailed you you typing in each track time to give you a running value for the Total Runnng Time as it were.
However this was not acceptable to me for two good reasons.

it would be easy to make a typo
as I have reported with regard to the Chat Room Java applet my computer and other late model PC browser versions cannot display Java without installing a large Java Runtime program I decided to try another searching approach having recalled the good results I sometimes got by using an earlier version of the ASK (http://www.ask.com) search engine which emphasised and encouraged you to enter your search requirement as a colloqial question Therefore I simply googled for this question:- "how do I calculate the total running time of a folder of mp3s" As you can readily see the result was astonishing a veritable bullseye in one http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/mp3_quality/google.jpg Of the possible 166,000 to sift through top of the list was this forum result "Google Answers: utility to calculate total playing time for all ... (http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=295146) MP3 file and the total playing time for the entire folder or CD. _MP3INDX.EXE may be run from anywhere, including a CD-ROM. Simply double click it's icon or" at:- http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=295146 which contained links to not one but a pair of free items:- [list=1][LIST=1]
MP3INDX.EXE

"[_MP3INDX.EXE] Creates an index of all of the .MP3 files in a folder
or on a CD-ROM including those in all levels of subdirectories. The
index, when printed out, is handy for use with a portable MP3 CD
player, especially one which does not have the capability of
displaying the file names. The index includes the "song length" of
each .MP3 file and the total playing time for the entire folder or CD.

_MP3INDX.EXE may be run from anywhere, including a CD-ROM. Simply
double click it's icon or the icon of it's "shortcut".

_MP3INDX.EXE [d:\Folder] [>"d:\Output File Folder\Output File Name"]

In order to include the optional parameters, simply create a text file
with a ".bat" extension and double click it's icon. Here is an example
of the contents of such a .bat file:

md "c:\My Music\MP3 CD Indices"
_MP3INDX.EXE d:\ >"c:\My Music\MP3 CD Indices\SPL-2003.2-1.txt"

Is a very good program for testing MP3 CDs, since it opens and reads
from every MP3 file on the CD-ROM."
http://llbest.com/_MP3INDX.htm

"MP3-Mixer" (Shareware): "You can select and highlight all the MP3 audio files ( or WAVs ) and let the program calculate the total playing time ( taking the mixing length in consideration ) so that you can match the total playing time of 74 minutes allowing you to record it to a CD." http://www.audiotoolsdirect.com/DJ_and_Mixing/more3.shtml all I then had to do was download these programs and try them out
the first was a doddle as mp3indx.exe turned out to be a ginormous file of a staggering 64,000 bytes
whereas the mp3-mixwer .exe program was far harder to locate to download and was a very much more complicated program of 2.36MB
thequoted download page as shown above is incorrect but
http://www.audiotoolers.com/
is however worth visiting as it has much info on digitising vinyl albums
but the home page of mp3-mixer is actually at:-
http://www.mmpx.nl/hsoft/
with another link to downlod it
Anyway I had noted in the blurb for mp3indx a reference to creating a batchfile (*.bat). and rather relished the challenge of renewing my handling of such old DOS files since for most of the 10 years that I ran and developed my UK company's accounts department we relied on a very compact and adaptable DOS accounts program and in order to do several tasks I had taught myself a great deal about batch files
However I quickly found that simply pasting the relatively tiny mp3indx.exe file in the same folder as a selected group of mp3s and clicking on it there gave the desired information voila:-
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/mp3_quality/fillmore_trt.jpg
OK enough for you to read today I'll be back ASAP with a further report after I have ripped the existing list, with a guide on how to do so (hint the original free Musicmatch Jukebox not the inferior replacement Yah..bloody..Hoo Jukebox and will have checked its TRT then we can see what room is left.
here endeth today's history and auditory lesson gals and boyos
"Sir" John Fowles BT
I'll be back ASAP with an alternative artwork proposal for the resulting CD front insert , as I too am not very enamoured of "Anything For Love" nor of that particular "Belt and Braces" picture. BTW the Americans rather quaintly call what in the UK are "braces" " suspenders" which to all red blooded Englishmen is an entirely different article of female clothing with pronounced erotic connotations.
OK Ruth you asked for it
found by image googling for
"ladies suspender belt uk"

I originally displayed a picture showing what such an item looks like but have been nicely asked to remove it and instead provide just the link to it which is:-
http://www.enjoy.co.uk/acatalog/12M.jpg
I was going to display a distinctly more erotic picture at:-
http://www.argoth.co.uk/acatalog/hnrh1150.jpg
but then I thought that would offend a few here so I had plumped for the still somewhat erotic pic originallty displayed of an
allegedly "Edible Candy Suspender Belt"
Sorry everybody

John, I will not even pretend that I understand all that you say, however, I understand enough to know that you have figured out a way to fit the songs onto the CDs. Wonderful! I am probably not the best person to figure out which order is best, so maybe someone will come forward who has the expertise needed. I am not quite prepared to finalize the Love Songs CD, and as I have stated before, I'm waiting for at least one other song to be nominated which belongs on that disk.

As to the artwork for the album cover, yes I think we should keep working on it. This is SO MUCH FUN! Thanks everyone! This is going to be a wonderful Christmas present to ourselves!

Happy Thanksgiving to all the my fellow Americans!!

P.S. And yes, I envisioned Gord with braces on his teeth when I first read that...even though I have heard of the suspenders explanation before. I am however, very interested in seeing a picture of the "female clothing with pronounced erotic connotations" which is the English version of suspenders. Oh my goodness! That is bloody funny!

John, your post about how to choose tracks to fit nicely on a CD shows that you have done a lot of research on the subject. I think, though, there may be a simpler way.

If you take a look at the CD-Recordable FAQ on this page:

http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq01.html#S1-5

you will see that a recordable CD will commonly hold either 74 or 80 minutes, translating to 650MB and 700MB respectively. (More specific information can be found at http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq07.html#S7-6 )

Knowing the amount of space required for 74 minutes (650MB), you can determine if your chosen tracks will fit by:

1. go to the file folder/directory in your file browser
2. highlight the tracks you want to record (hold down Ctrl key while selecting each track with the mouse or Ctrl-A for all of them)
3. right click on one of the highlighted items

This will bring up a menu; choose "Properties". Look at the size of the selected files on the display that pops up. If the total will fit on your CD, you are all set! No need to install any programs or run a separate batch file.

It seems you are using Nero Express' My Audio CD to display the selected tracks. In their wisdom to make things "foolproof", Roxio has chosen to display the audio tracks by time, rather than size (although changing this may be an option for the program.) In the end, the total size of the files is what matters. Time notwithstanding, they will still have to fit on the CD and those are written byte-by-byte until the disk is full.

However, if "time" is important to you, then the programs you're using seem to fit your needs.

(By the way, see http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq02.html#S2-29 for the background behind why the standard length of CDs is 74 minutes long!)

Looking forward to the final list! Thanks Gitchigumee!

In Tim's honor, Go My Way. Any song that is a favorite of Tim's deserves to be included.

And yes, that is the cover from the single of Anything For Love. I ought to know. I have it. I may have all the singles, but I am not certain. I spent a lot of time (and money) at Ebay back in the late 1990s and early 2000s!

As a historical note, in one of his radio interviews (1968 or 1969), Skip Weshner christened three songs Gord recorded a "trilogy" of sorts, about the phases of love. The songs were: First Time, Softly and Last Time, in that order. I suggest that you place them on the CD in that order, rather than keeping the set list in the order the songs were nominated. Hey, be a producer and order all the songs after careful thought (and a few more listens). Of course, we can each do that, when we burn the CD ...

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

I'm sorry to say that I've been away for the long holiday weekend, and was unable to view John's photo of "suspenders" before it was taken off (I'll bet he picked a good one), but I did google the topic and now I get the general idea. Funny how something that was invented for a functional purpose can turn into something sexy and naughty.

Zoneranger, JohnFowles, and anyone else interested: Please submit as many album covers you would care to design and then I think we should take a vote. Of course, anyone is free to print anything they want to use as a cover, but maybe we could have one "official" cover. How would a deadline of 12/3 (one week from today) work for anyone interested?

Val, Peter Bro 10 beat you to "Go My Way" so please feel free to choose another love song not yet nominated (I would personally be honored to have your choice included). I will definitely keep those 3 songs you suggested in the sequence you requested once we get around to rearranging things.

Here's the updated list:

1. Softly (Gitchigumee)
2. Thank You For The Promises (Jesse Joe)
3. If I Could (RM)
4. If You Need Me (Claudia)
5. The Last Time I Saw Her Face (mnmouse)
6. Now and Then (GJA)
7. Inspiration Lady (brink-)
8. Fine as Fine Can Be (joveski)
9. I'm Not Supposed to Care (The Rez)
10. Your Love's Return (Rainbow Trout)
11. Beautiful (Kathy in Michigan)
12. My Love For You (Borderstone)
13. Shadows (Tim)
14. Song for a Winter's Night (Brannah)
15. The First Time Ever I Saw Her Face (johnfowles)
16. Go My Way (Peter Bro 10)
17. The Way I Feel (gwen snyder)

Anyone care to help out with the dates (year) of the original recordings of these songs and the length of each? I know there must be a simple way...I just don't know what it is, other than picking up all my CD cases and taking a look.

P.S. The forgotten song was mentioned in an earlier post, but has yet to be nominated.

P.S.S. or is it P.P.S. YIKES! I just found John's links! The photo I found was pretty boring compared to his: http://www.corsetsandcrinolines.com/timelineitem.php?index=190046

hope this makes a good gift for you and loved ones, gitch:)

as an aside, any GL compilations I've done are based on recordings having a similar tempo (bpm) rather than common lyrical theme...I suppose the last GL comp I made (eons ago) was an exception to this when I ripped all the unreleased tracks off Songbook and put onto 1 disk

am optimistic the zoner or our stonewaller can whip up a creative, appropriate cover...I would love to but only seem inspired when some sort of twisted wit is the theme...maybe when they do so, they could also make a subtle CD title change for this...the Love Songs title sounds like something the Carpenters or Bread would release, heh ...I think Your Love's Return works nicely as a title and has the key word in there too, great selection, RT

well, you may need a full box set to get all my fave GL 'love' tunes compiled but to make it simple, I'll just go with the final track found on his final studio album: "Sometimes I Wish"....thx, jj

ps) zoner, I think I dig your HOT album cover best...very KTel :)

Um, well, I notice that nobody has nominated If You Could Read My Mind! I presume it's because you consider it a "not love" song, but if you look at the list you will see several others that are about the end of a love affair. In fact, the theme of Last Time isn't that different.

So, if IYCRMM qualifies, obviously that would be my pick.

Then there is Stone Cold Sober ...

YESSSSSS!!!!! VAL!!!!!!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!! If You Could Read My Mind is probably the best known and perhaps the best loved Gordon Lightfoot song of all time. And in my book, a love song doesn't have to be a song that professes undying love for someone, it only has to speak of love, in any of its forms, past, present or future.

I think if we get 1 more song nominated, then maybe we should close it out at an even 20.

Here's the updated list:

1. Softly (Gitchigumee)
2. Thank You For The Promises (Jesse Joe)
3. If I Could (RM)
4. If You Need Me (Claudia)
5. The Last Time I Saw Her Face (mnmouse)
6. Now and Then (GJA)
7. Inspiration Lady (brink-)
8. Fine as Fine Can Be (joveski)
9. I'm Not Supposed to Care (The Rez)
10. Your Love's Return (Rainbow Trout)
11. Beautiful (Kathy in Michigan)
12. My Love For You (Borderstone)
13. Shadows (Tim)
14. Song for a Winter's Night (Brannah)
15. The First Time Ever I Saw Her Face (johnfowles)
16. Go My Way (Peter Bro 10)
17. The Way I Feel (gwen snyder)
18. Sometimes I Wish (jj)
19. If You Could Read My Mind (vlmagee)

Congratulations JJ on your 1,000th post! And If You Change Your Mind (hey that'd be a good name for a song!) about designing a cover..... I would challenge you to come up with something as un-Carpenter-ish and un-Bread-ish as possible...please! All due respect.

In view of the controversial and irreverent way young Jimmy has approached this task in his second version I dare to suggest that "Approaching Lavender" should also be included on this compilation album!!
here is my first effort

Don't worry I'll be back, not least because I have a load of comments to make regarding Cathy's response to my well

I like "Songs of Love" better than "Lovesongs."

I have ideas for a cover, but no idea how to use them.

I think it would be cool to have a cover that includes Gord at different ages/stages in his career...and along with that, something along the lines of "love is timeless" (just like our man GL is timeless). I think this would be appropriate because the songs to be included on the CD are from many different decades, and I would love to see a clever depiction of Gord through the years. Also, I LOVE the idea of the Canadian maple leaf subtly used as a shadowy background or border. I am also envisioning nature...mountains, trees, a serene lake, etc... I think Gord would like that.

Anyway, just some of my ideas...

I like the first Love Songs, he looks like he knows all about love....sorry John the Christmasy one looks like he is thinking about his first divorce and does he ever want to love again.

JJ - great picture, he knows all about Santa eh? Just because I want to be right, it was the last Massey event that you said you were sending piccies...that was November of '06. The ones from 30 months ago - did find their way to me - after a while. :)
Hope Harry has a fabulous Christmas, I bet he just makes it a blast for you.

exactly my feelings
In fact I had already decided that hoped that somebody would nominate Romance as one of the songs to be included which led to a slightly revised version

She contuinued:-
I have ideas for a cover, but no idea now to use them

I was also thinking that I get so much satisfaction in designing these covers, as no doubt do jjand ZR, that more of you should be encouraged to try the results of your creative juices as it were (no not those juices Ron:p!!!) and I intend trying to find the time to create one of my famous tutorials:
I envisage an illustrated guide showing where to get suitable free programs then covering picture cropping and resizing , plus detecting fonts and colors, then composing, including what the keener sighted of you might have spotted the simple and creative use of a little HTML to create a web page style "table" into which one can plonk your basic artwork with an effective bicolor shaded (to make a "3D" effect) border as used on these examples which can then be saved as a jpg file using the easy to use Gadwin Printscreen screenshot freeware program.
Again I'll be back

Well I'll go back to one of my faves and one I spoke about with Mr. Lightfoot in our chat.... "I'll Tag Along" ..
He told me it's one of his faves as well..and he plays it on his own at home as a practice tune..

It speaks to my feelings about him and his music..I love it..
It's as simple as that..

I've been 'tagging along' for many years, to many places and if my wishes come true I'll continue to tag along on this marvelous journey he's taken me on..and all of you as well.

As a "relationship" song it talks of commitment and trust, hope, belief and a history between people in a relationship even in the face of abandonment.. love creates those feelings..

"You've got time enough for two of us
What is mine I will share"

OK can we therefore assume Bru that that is your nomination, and could some kind souls add the sublime and saddest GL Love song ever "That Same Old Obsession" and the very vocative"Spin spin" , plus the two premier "not love" songs (after IYCRMM that is) namely I'm Not Sayin'" and "For Lovin Me".
I have a good reason for including one or the other of those two, as before the rules were clarified I was already thinkng that I could make a convincing case for so doing as it seemed to methat a "not love" song could make a better "sandwich filler" than "Softly", on the basis that that would realisically portray the three phases of a failed romance, namely the initiation "The First Time" the failure or denial, followed by the denouement "The Last Time" as a fitting illustration of the previously mentioneecd Love story Triology,
or as the late Canon Paul Goddard, one time vicar of Sherborne Dorset England and a former Spitfire pilot once told me
"My business is "Hatch Match and Despatch"
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/sherborne/Sherborne_Abbey_West_Window.jpgThe modern stained glass Sherborne Abbey West Window, inaugurated by HM the Queen in 1998 to celebrate the Abbey's 1000th birthday
I found that those 4 and the previous 20 after conversion to mp3s
proved to be just under the CD-R Limit of 80 minutes
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/images/TRT_24_Tracks.jpg
OK now I'll have to substitute I'llTag Along for one of the others of approximately the same length
I'll be back!!!

FINALLY, THE TRACKS FOR THE CD:

1. Softly (Gitchigumee) 3:23
2. Thank You For The Promises (Jesse Joe) 2:53
3. If I Could (RM) 4:18
4. If You Need Me (Claudia) 2:50
5. The Last Time I Saw Her Face (mnmouse)
6. Now and Then (GJA) 3:09
7. Inspiration Lady (brink-) 3:10
8. Fine as Fine Can Be (joveski) 2:59
9. I'm Not Supposed to Care (The Rez) 3:31
10. Your Love's Return (Rainbow Trout) 3:57
11. Beautiful (Kathy in Michigan) 3:22
12. My Love For You (Borderstone) 3:37
13. Shadows (Tim) 2:59
14. Song for a Winter's Night (Brannah) 3:01
15. The First Time Ever I Saw Her Face (johnfowles) 3:10
16. Go My Way (Peter Bro 10) 2:16
17. The Way I Feel - Version 2 (gwen snyder) 3:02
18. Sometimes I Wish (jj) 3:37
19. If You Could Read My Mind (vlmagee) 3:40
20. I'll Tag Along (charlene)

NOW, here's the problem, we have more songs coming in. I would suggest this:
(A) Songs 1-20 are ON the CD subject to (B) below
(B) That we have 'til Monday to decide if we want to replace OUR song with a different song
(C) That we can make more suggestions for songs and if someone who has not made a nomination yet wants to, they can borrow our added suggestions as their own subject to (D)below
(D) That the additional tracks nominated are only included IF there is room on the CD (based on the expertise of Sir John)

Love...if you believe your nomination is about love, then that's good enough for me. After all, this is art, not science, and I really prefer not to get into a debate about what songs are worthy of being considered love songs and which ones are not.

Here's the possible additions to the CD:

21. Romance (Silverheels) 3:32
22. It's Worth Believin' (2nd choice of Silverheels)
23. That Same Old Obsession (2nd choice of johnfowles) 3:44
24. Spin Spin (3rd choice of johnfowles) 2:29
25. I'm Not Sayin' (4th choice of johnfowles) 2:31
26. For Lovin' Me (5th choice of johnfowles) 2:27

We still have a few songs with no times listed. Also, anyone care to figure out the YEAR?

jj

yeah, Sir, you put your finger on the Gord song type CD comps that I fancy: denouement (or as I call them, post mortums) ...Changes was perhaps the first recording that hooked me (if My Love For You can be considered a Gord tune then so can this I suppose)

I dug up an older comp that has my 2nd, 3rd, etc choices on it:
Changes
Talking In Your Sleep
The Circle Is Small
I'm Not Supposed To Care
Looking At The Rain
Miguel
Never Too Close
On The High Seas
I'll Prove My Love
Only Love Would Know
It's Worth Believin' (ah, bru...everything a song should be :) )

not sure if this complicates things further, I'm still trying to make my way through the 1000 year abbey timeline ....hey, great pic and font on the first CD, JFo ....terrific Lavender line, certainly....yes, that sportcoat and scene does somehow look Christmassy...I'd like a coat like that...wow, it's almost December

don we now our Gord apparel...

Hey slow down everybody ,I am struggling with this accursedly slow witted dial up connection , which means that by the time I have loaded uo the thread at any moment then revised this draft reply and got the quote to come up then paster then waited for the page to reload, then try to correct my inevitable typos a dozen more replies have been made and I have to start the whole sorry business over phew!!
let's try again
OK I guess we could argue and debate the exact CD contents until Kingdom come whatever that means!
I have now withdrawn Spin Spin very apt though it is IMHO in favo(u)r of I"ll Tag Along., on the strength of CHar's brilliant justification
(reminds me my response to Deb's comment
I like the first Love Songs, he looks like he knows all about love....sorry John the Christmasy one looks like he is thinking about his first divorce and does he ever want to love again.
is that I did not realise how like a Christmas card that Inspiration Lady screenshot is and yes at the time early 2004 that he made that video no doubt Gord was ruminating on the break up with Elizabeth, and he was not yet over the Moon so to speak in that regard and had yet to make his famous "Ring Ring" call to CHar!!!

Now as for the track times the solution was staring at you and I suspect Ruth realised that fact
I admittedly had to make mp3s to do it but unless I find a similarly simple program to mp3indx.exe that will work with a folder full of wav's that is to my mind an easy and elegant way to go. In fact having now exchanged "tag" for "spin" the revised TRT for my suggested 24 is still in line with a CD-R's capcity viz:
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/images/24_TRT_Revised_With_I'll_Tag_Along.jpg
Note as I think yoiun subsequently did Ruth that the value shown after every file is in fact its running time in minutes and seconds.
As far as the date of the recording you can either I suggest check the circle P year on the CD rear insert
for example I see that "EOM" was1986 and use that or subtract one if you have good reason to believe it was the year before, or consult the oracle/cornucopia at:-
http://www.lightfoot.ca/albrecno.htm
where Wayne states the recording dates of every album
(My Love For You is obviously pre the film release date)

Thanks Jimmy
the font is actually the one used on the Songbook box set and after scanning the Gordon Lightfoot from the case I submitted it to the fantastic WF (What The Font} site as described on the old "Wolfgang's Vault" thread I resurrected yesterday, and from there I found that it is footlight MT Light I then found a free download of the True Type Font (ttf) file and attach it to this for anybody interested to dowload and then copy to their c:\windows\font folder
Now I AM going to attempt to burn my latest 24 selection and then get on with a sample rear tray insert artwork
And finally since Deb has kindly sabotaged my cover design by withdrawing Inspiration Lady I am forced to change my own number one to IL.
Now would some kind soul nominate "The First Time" else the love song trilogy is kaput!!!

Assuming that under "Here's the possible additions to the CD" listing are tunes that one might consider to replace their original choice : I offer "If Children Had Wings". I'm not making a change, and I think the original 20 were excellent.

ahh, good selection, B.... not sure if that falls under the love or not love category, heh

reminds me of another fun thread, perhaps the Duets team seletions could be refreshed so as to bring them up to date with current events, maybe add more and someone design new cover for the original must have alienated many international or new members...it's dated

also, perhaps JFo's seasonal CD cover could replace the old Xmas CD, plus revise/add tunes

hunting through some archives I also found the rap CD plus others, speaking of controversial

cheers & goodluck with CD homestretch, gitch...your cover sounds like job for the zoner

jj (umm, deb, okok, I WAS wrong...ya better archive this admission, i rarely confess...lol)

ps) Sir, never know about What the Font...interesting, maybe I need to put the G5 online

BTW, for those curious, here I reveal my source pics for recent odd, time-killing creations

oh, deb, as you can see, twas not my bod....my neck is only 1/2 the diameter of Bolton's

...forgive me Gord, perhaps I've sinned...but these superimpositions only happen once a year

I was rather alarmed today to see that an opportunistic ebay seller identity manaver3961 (http://myworld.ebay.com/manaver3961/)
from Ohio was offering a third copy of the so called "Whisper My Name" CD I have previously displayed the artwork for in my thread about "lazy ebay"as an example of poor font selection
This is an audio only version of the well known PBS Soundstage 1979 Video and is therefore likewise an ROIO (Recording Of Independant Origin) for which no payment gets made to the artist
The three auctions are the current one that started today ending on December3 item number 320189998953
starting bid US$19.99
and a pair of completed auctions
item 320186947815 ended November 26
and item 320184283441 ended november 20
for allt hree auctions the seller cheekily claims
"Comes shrink wrapped with full color factory inserts." Oh yeah
Both completed auctions ended with a single bid for the $19.99 but
this means that this character is making $60 a month on the side
It got me thinking
in my initial posting to this thread I carefully said
"OK I expect everybody has at one time or another wanted to burn their own favo(u)rite's CD and as far as I know it is perfectly legal to make your own compilation CD from favourite tracks on CDs that you own. but not to then distribute it of course."
but this sort of behaviour is quite obviously illegal.
It then occurred to me that our task here is providing such reprehensible people with more material
In addition our public display of artwork based in copyright images is also most likely illegal and I for one do not relish the thought of somebody using my artwork to aid their criminal activities and putting money in their pockets.I have therefore replaced my two offerings in this thread with a suitable "image not available" graphic. However I hope the more creative of you have now got the general idea and inspiration, and I can see no harm in continuing to discuss a track selection that is purely for our own benefits and pleasure, and I intend returning with my promised free software guide to help anybody wanting to try their hand at their own artwork. Perhaps we can all eventually private message our best efforts to the Mother Superior, who could if she so desired then send out multiple PMs displaying which one is in her opinion is the winner
(it was her idea so Ruth should be the sole judge IMHO)

hmmm, only speaking for myself, should any wiseguy plan on using any of the light-hearted pic parodies I've shared over the past decade as part of of his criminal activities, well, I'd like to think they atleast cut me in on a piece of the action ;) ...honestly, I'm thinking the chances are slim and none ...onward, enjoy

How thoughtless of me...
I have been driving to work for almost a month enjoying "Spin Spin" and then I select a different song...

This is a great topic.

Sad that someone is capitalizing on an artist's art.
Very much the reason I jumped out of commercial art back when dinosaurs still roamed the earth. I enjoy my art now as a topic of personal thought.

Out of respect for Barry Harvey, I will return to this topic next week. May he forever rest in peace. Love and comfort to all who hold Barry dear. May a song of love help to ease the pain during this difficult time.

Hello everyone, here we go!

THE LIST is finally final!! I have taken it upon myself to choose what I would like as the first three songs on the CD, as well as the last song. The rest we need to figure out a sensible order, how to fit them onto the CD(s), etc. Are there any unwritten rules in doing this? If not, then may I suggest that we mix it up, and not have the songs run chronologically.

I have begun working on an insert for the CD case which will include all of the other nominated songs, perhaps a small tribute to Barry, and anything else that anyone would like to include or suggest.

Please PM me any possible album covers. This was Sir John’s suggestion and I happen to agree with him. I will make sure to PM all who have participated with the final selection. And of course, we are free to print and use whatever artwork we choose for the cover, but I think it’s kind of fun to have an “official” cover.

If anybody sees any mistakes or can think of anything I have forgotten, please let me know.

Thanks Jesse.

If my math is correct, I have a total running time of 74:03. That would be including 10 seconds at the beginning, 10 seconds at the end, and 10 seconds between the songs.

Why isn't "Nous Vivons Enseble" included? That song's very romantic.

It's only 3:45 too. :)

Hi Borderstone, each person only got one nomination (yours is My Love For You) and I limited it to the first 21 people who responded. I will be sure to include it in the "other songs nominated" section of the insert, and of course, you can surely include it on your own CD if you wish.

OK Jimmie is being his usual modest self. in fact for recent new members and those with, as Paul Simon memoriably put it "short attention spans" the three thumbs he has displayed recently were only a part of a project to develop a range of Lightfoot fantasy themed albums to which Love Songs is a worthy addition.
the earlier ones were inspired by an innocent question 3 years ago now about Gord's "Christmas" album ,
"I heard a Christmas song by Gordon Lightfoot this week. I don't know the name of it, but would love to have it.. Does anyone know of this song?"
so it is very relevant to resurrect the old thread at this time of the year. As soon as I post this I will bring the old thread at:-
question (http://www.corfid.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=11951)
I was very impresed by the subsequent responses and at the time I saved the whole lot to my hard drive in a new folder that I named
Master Not Songbook stuff
I always intended to create a suitably modified box set err umm box to put the resulting fictitious CDs in and here is the front of it.:-
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/images/not_songbook_front.jpg
OK now to write the other post and add a pet fantasy album project of my own

I have just rediscovered this old thread and again thought it worth resurrecting
'sídes which it gives me another chance to see if this poxy forum will play ball and display a YouTube video

Ditto although I think the YouTube display facility has been behaving itself recently Let's see
