well, seemed the world was pulling for the Sox when they were removing the jinx against the Yanks but other than folks who live in Beantown, how can anyone not be stunned by the Rockies historic streak and be pulling for them all the way?

but we dig the city + folks of boston and most of all their park :)

hope it's alot of fun for both cities but keep the game MOVING!!!

:) BO SOX  BO SOX :)

The Rockies have some talented players but the Sox are a much, much better team all around. They can outplay the Rockies at all levels. Tonights game was no fluke, that's for certain. Best bullpen I've seen from most any team in a loooong time.

Hate to say, but if the Rockies pull a single win in this series, that would be a feat. Of course, just to be on the safe side, I'll be sleeping in my #24 Red Sox jersey to bed. It's day 4 wearing it during the day. I shared this fact today with the great ladies at the hospital auxillary thrift store and they applauded my dedication .

Manny Rahairmess?

False sense of security for the Sox fans. As I said, win or lose Rockies are a great team and I am proud that they made it this far. I do believe that the Sox will have to work for a win.

NAH, not a false sense of security at all. The Sox play bettah as a team than the Rockies do. Sure the Rockies have some talent, but they're lacking the overall teamwork, experience (and the bullpen) among other things. I'm sure or I hope their performance in subsequent WS games here will be an improvement over last night's.

I can't argue that the Rockies are the best in their league...they've proven that, but this is the WS now.

Great effort by the BO Sox!

for you BoSox fans - a little history lesson:
(I, as a kid attended some of the games in Toronto mentioned in the article)
From Toronto Star:
Red Sox Nation – here in T.O.

Jim Coyle

Had a birthday yesterday. (Don't ask.) Time rolls on and a man counts memories more than years. So let me tell you about the best birthday present I ever had.

It was delivered 15 years ago in the wee hours at Women's College Hospital, a little redhead (the Vikings passing through Ireland long centuries ago, I figure) announcing himself to the world with a set of lungs worthy of an umpire roaring a called third strike.

As luck had it, she who bore him was an old hand at such matters by then, he being heir No. 3, and we were all home in time to watch the Blue Jays, one birthday boy in another's arms, win their first World Series that night down in Atlanta.

So this date never passes but I think a bit about generations and baseball and, the World Series starting last night in Boston, get a little wistful for temps perdu.

For as it happens, some of us growing long(ish) in the tooth around town actually carry dual citizenship when it comes to the grand old game – associate members, as it were, in Red Sox Nation.

Gather round, kids, and I'll explain. Wait, while we get the pipe fired up and the rocking chair going. There, now off we go down memory lane.

It was a thing of beauty, so it was, that ballpark built in 1926 at the foot of Bathurst St. on the lakeshore. Cost the harbour commission a cool $750,000. Held almost 20,000 fans, the equal of many major-league parks.

It was home to the Toronto Maple Leafs, a baseball team before they were a hockey side, colours worn by legends like Rocky Nelson, the club owned for a spell by the brassy Jack Kent Cooke, skippered by Sparky Anderson.

Long before the Montreal Expos brought major-league baseball to Canada, long before the Jays hit town, it was as good as it got around here for ball fans down at that damp, dank (a lot like Fenway Park, as it happens) diamond by the lake.

By 1965, the Maple Leafs had become the farm team of the Red Sox – the Leafs as successful an operation on the field as the parent club (losing 100 games that season) wasn't.

Under Dick Williams, famous as a dugout despot, the Leafs won the league championship and the Governor's Cup in 1965 and '66. Fireplug third-baseman Joe Foy was rookie of the year, MVP and batting champ in '65. Reggie Smith, an outfield whippet, took the batting title in '66, the same season big right-hander Gary Waslewski was pitcher of the year.

For the 1967 season, the Red Sox called up Foy and Smith and Waslewski and second-baseman Mike Andrews. Williams was hired as manager.

And one of the great Cinderella seasons ever was had, the 100-to-1 underdog Red Sox going from last to first in the American League, all the way to the World Series, losing in seven to St. Louis.

As the Boston writer Dan Shaughnessy rather arrestingly put it, "the skinny little girl next door became a Playboy centrefold overnight."

Teenagers of the day appreciated the imagery. And the way we figured, the Red Sox might as well have been wearing a Maple Leaf on their uniforms for all the help the Toronto pipeline had delivered to the turnaround.

Back home, alas, the Leafs folded the next season. They tore down Maple Leaf Stadium a year later.

But in Toronto, for ball fans of a certain age, the link to Fenway was forged for a lifetime.

So, from those of us who remember the Stadium and the summer of '66, Go Sox.

(And happy birthday, child.)

Here's a BIG history lesson and a very important one:

Just like the Red Sox ballclub themselves, the fans of the Red Sox Nation are multi-national/ethnic/cultural. There is no place in baseball for any form of ethnocentrism and it is simply unacceptable. You won't find that at Fenway Park - not among the players, not among the fans.

For a few seconds there last night, I was concerned but quickly came back to reality, knowing that despite the Rockies getting into the game, the Sox were still ahead! My faith never faultered.

Yeh...the Curse was a long time!! But don't forget that the Sox won some before then (and came close some other times).

The Rockies had a great run and into the wild card. A tremendous effort. A good team but not solid, great. Some really good players...but all have to be in top form, etc., for it to be a great team and great enough to win a WS. The Red Sox were better than the Rockies at every level. Better bullpen, better offense, defense, etc. Great rookies!!!

The Red Sox had it all together...a great team and even better than the 2004 WS team (stats).

Matt Stairs

Stairs inks $3.25M deal with Jays

N.B. slugger signs two-year deal to stay in Toronto

THE CANADIAN PRESS Published Saturday November 3rd, 2007
Appeared on page C1

TORONTO - His first multi-year deal in nearly a decade, a prominent role with the 2008 Toronto Blue Jays and the chance to finish out his career in Canada was pretty much all Matt Stairs could have asked for in his latest contract.

One request the Fredericton native didn't make was that the US$3.25 million, two-year agreement he signed Friday be paid in Canadian dollars rather than the American greenback.
"I suppose I should have with the Canadian money being higher now," the 39-year-old quipped on a conference call from his home in Bangor, Maine.
"Nah, I'm just glad it's over with, glad the talks are done and now we can get under way with winning some games up in Toronto again."
The Blue Jays feel the same way after aggressively working to get Stairs back in tow to share left field duties with Reed Johnson, play a little first base when needed and offer a big stick off the bench the rest of the time.
There was at least one other team seriously interested in the veteran slugger, but they never stood a chance. His only other multi-year deal was a $5.275-million, two-year contract covering 1999 and 2000 with the Oakland Athletics.
He's signed seven one-year deals since.
"Other deals had to be just unbelievable for me not to return to Toronto," said Stairs. "And with Toronto offering me a two-year deal, it's hard to say no."
Stairs' first season with the Blue Jays was one to remember as he hit .289 with 21 homers and 64 RBIs in 125 games. He came up north on an $850,000, contract to be the team's fourth outfielder last December, but became an integral part of the club as injuries to several regulars mounted.
He ended up getting 357 at-bats, far more than expected, and showed he had plenty more left in him than simply being a bat off the bench.
That's why Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi didn't mind giving Stairs a front-loaded contract. He'll make $2.25 million in 2008 and $1 million in 2009, when he's expected to become a role player and Adam Lind is projected to take over left field.
"Matt knows he's going play, probably the same amount of at-bats he had this year, which would be great for us," said Ricciardi. "We want to have the same kind of guy back and probably not give him more at-bats.
"I think right around 250 to 350, 400, 450 tops, with him and Reed out there I think we're pretty solid."

If Rheal decides to play another year or so, man I would love to see him pitch for The Jays. :)

Jesse Joe, I don't know if podunklander remembers him, but I do.

Like podunklander, I'm a native New Englander and have been a "member" of Red Sox Nation since before it was called that. I've been following the Red Sox since I was...<ahem>...a child. Memories of the "Impossible Dream" loss (the year Rheal was born) are as fresh in my mind as 2004's World Series win.

Unfortunately, Rheal's stint in Boston didn't stick. (Fenway Park is a southpaw's nightmare.) He might have better luck playing for the Jays. They could use him, for sure!

(Ironically, I'm also of Acadian descent. It is almost certain that Rheal and I are cousins of some sort. My g3grandmother was a Cormier (from Nova Scotia) whose grandfather was from Beaubassin, NB. Just about all Acadians are related in some manner!)

Hi Cathy A,

Great to hear all of this. It is indeed a small world eh ? I do believe this is the first I get to answer one of your post. I somehow heard Rheal didn't do to good in Boston.

I didn't follow his carrer all that much, as I am a hockey person first, and then in Baseball, the Blue Jays are my team.

He did play with the Montreal Expos. I can't speak for him but I think he would probably be happy to finish a couple of years in the great Canadian city of TO. What Canadian boy wouldn't ! Matt Stairs seems very happy to be playing in that fantastic Dome, and he is doing his share, helping The Jays... (He was born in St-John, NB.) But as far as Rheal, one would have to see. Everything is possible I guess.

It was a big thing in the early 90's down here when news broke that Rheal was going to play for The St-Louis Cardinals. Local small town boy making it to the majors. He grew up about maybe 3 miles south of where I grew up.

Very nice to get to hear from you catrinka. maybe you and I are also related.

You must love our musical hero Gord, to be on this board. :)

All the best,

~Jesse~

You could be related to J.P. Cormier too Catrinka/Cathy!
Hey Jesse-Joe - Catrinka is Yuri's wife....glad she's stepping into the world of the "Net People" on-line like the rest of us!
It's a small world...geeze- THERE'S a song if ever I heard one!

Oh well many thank's for telling me this Charlene. Yuri's wife, I did not know that of course. But I do remember that Yuri said in an earlier post that his wife was from Boston. So there you go. Still hope she keeps posting. Another great Lighthead. Yuri is a friendly guy as Im sure Cathy is as well.

I appreaciate you letting me know things like this, Char.

Thank You Much ! :)

Hi Cathy!!! Nice to have another native New Englander/sports fan on the board  WELCOME! I sorta/kinda recall Rheal...I know my son would better than I. That's the way it goes with pitchers though - some have come and gone but all have left memories! We certainly remember them if they gave us the 'middle finger'!

Well, I've been impressed by your knowledge of New England sports even before you joined us here ;) lol! Last Friday night in the chatroom, Yuri was typing the names of the football teams from the 40's you were rattling off!

I only found the one copy of a newspaper article (1945) about the football team that my father owned...and that was from very soon after it was formed. I only have a partial clipping of the newspaper article, so the name of the team isn't indicated in what little I have. It does indicate the Italian-American sporting club and the Cercle Canadien as sponsors.

PATS were GREAT last night...AWESOME game!!! and how about Ray Allen over the weekend WOOOEEEEEEEEE!!!

Wow! So many postings to comment on! I'll take them one at a time...

Jesse Joe ~

It is indeed a small world! And, you're quite right...Rheal didn't do very well in Boston. Kinda like Marc Gagné this year. Seems like Canadian baseball players have a bit of trouble catching on in Bean Town. I wish him luck for the future, though.

Although I'm a baseball fan, hockey is also high on my list of favorite sports. I've been following the Bruins since before becoming a Red Sox fan. And, as podunklander has guessed, I'm also a Patriots fan. Toss the Celtics into the mix and you get an idea of how I spent my youth!

If you are Acadian, chances are very good that we are related! Genealogy is a passion for me (to Yuri's consternation), so feel free to send me a private message and I'll be happy to check it out!

I've always loved Gord's music, but haven't had much time to get involved...I've kinda tagged along with Yuri. But, the people here have been very supportive of Yuri, which has endeared them to me. I'll probably not have a lot of time to contribute very often, but will be back!

Charlene~

I'm quite sure I'm related to J.P. Cormier, but haven't been able to trace his ancestry. If you know of anywhere that can be found online, I'd love to know!

Thanks for letting people know that I'm Yuri's wife...I forget that people here don't know that!

As for stepping into the world of "net people"...I've actually been online for about 10 years (computing for almost twice as long), just haven't joined up with any forums!

podunklander~

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm very happy to be here...and thrilled to find another rabid Red Sox fan!

I wish I could take credit for prior knowledge of the football teams from the 40's...but I have to admit I had to look some of it up! However, my Dad played semi-pro ball, so I probably have a better background knowledge than many.

I'm fascinated by the team that your dad owned. With those clues, I might be able to tap into my research sources and come up with something. Give me some time and I'll report back.

The Pats had me a bit worried, but they managed to pull it out! Whew! I missed Ray Allen's debut here in Toronto, but caught some headlines...Wow! If he keeps playing like that, the Celts might have a shot at getting back the title!

(Just so you know, my siblings and nephews are HUGE Yankee fans...they haven't been talking to me lately!)

SilverHeels,

In yet another display of great bravery, I did check Spieling's blog. Just as I figured, he's mighty full of himself and apparently mighty full, period (weigh-in clause ?). Seriously though, he has to be one of the best big game pitchers of all time.

Yankees don't do blogs......they.... (I'm working on this part).

Did your dad play in Masschusetts too? I really have to find a day to get to the library in Mass and go through the newspaper archives. But if you could find some info...kewl! and thanks! :)

Yeah that Pats game was a nail biter for a minute there! Ray Allen is SUPER and glad to have him back East. I've been following him since I was a student at UCONN (the same time as me) -had him sign a poster for my son :).

congrats to Bosox! ....I missed most of the series, IMO, such a slow sport unless your team's invloved...not sure of this one was more boring or not than the Bosox series win a few years ago but the journey there is certainly usually most exciting for most fans:)

I wish there was a salary cap to even the 'playing field' a bit, it's rediculous for small market teams and i really love it when they somehow manage to knock off the big spenders :) :)

I heard that Yanks paid ARod more than 11 different teams TOTAL payroll....and Bosox paid over $100M for one of their Japanese pitchers...crazy, and Toronto is starting to follow suit....to bad the days of seeing the young prospects develop through one's farm system and then play and star for that same organization are pretty much gone....i guess money can buy happiness but i love when it occasionally buys misery instead

glad nobody was killed during the celebrations, just a few nuts got out of hand which is not fair if it tarnished the feat or fine city of Boston...seems like more normal than not in any city

to us others, maybe next year :)

Red Sox coming to N.S.

the canadian press Published Wednesday December 12th, 2007
Appeared on page C1

HALIFAX - It may be the middle of hockey season, but baseball will be the focus when Boston Red Sox team officials bring the World Series trophy to Nova Scotia next month.

The Bluenose Bosox Brotherhood, a fan club of the team in Nova Scotia, has convinced the Red Sox to include the province on the trophy's tour.
Brooke Taylor, a member of the legislature, said last night the visit will include a stop in Province House.
He said it looks like the trophy will be here Jan. 8-9.
Taylor said he doesn't believe any current players will make the trip, but a former player might. Names being kicked around include former pitchers Bill (Spaceman) Lee and Jim Lonborg.
The Red Sox enjoy a huge fan following in the Maritimes. An official with the Red Sox media relations office confirmed the trip is on, but had no details.
The Red Sox swept the Colorado Rockies in this year's World Series for their second title in four years. Their 2004 championship ended an 86-year drought

VERY KEWL!!! In fact, I was supposed to go see/visit the trophy at 5:30 today at my son's college...but due to the snow, it's been cancelled. BUMMER. We're hoping it gets rescheduled SOON...but exams are next week and my son's concerned that he'll miss out on seeing it.
