David Liberty
Labyrinth of Leers
**

It is never a good sign when an album opens with a blatant rip-off of another song.

Such is the case with this album from singer/ songwriter David Liberty, whose debut opens with a song which sounds almost exactly like the classic "Sultans of Swing." In fact, it is evident throughout the CD that his music is greatly inspired by Dire Straits, right down to the Mark Knopfler guitar style which can be heard in a few songs. Besides this influence, Liberty showcases a rootsy sounding voice, almost like Gordon Lightfoot's and his songwriting style isn't that bad, though kind of repetitive at times.

Patrick Brennan rates his music reviews on a scale of one to four:

Patrick Brennan is a Grade 12 student at Riverview High School. His CD reviews appear every Saturday in Whatever.

You can hear clips from his new album at his website: http://www.davidliberty.com/

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't hear any resemblance to Gordon Lightfoot, myself.

Thank's Mouse, I agree with you fully, there is no ressemblance to Gordon Lightfoot whatsoever. This Patrick Brennan from Riverview Grade 12, makes me wonder if he ever heard GL, poet extraordinaire, at all.

Thanks again Mouse, hope Cathy gets to hear it. :)

I can hear Dire Straits in about 4 or 5 of the songs but not even a hint of Lightfoot anywhere. His voice sounds like a male Shakira, not Gordon Lightfoot.

I only listen to about 30 seconds of the first song, after mnmouse posted his Web site.

A male Shakira, very interesting, Im going to listen to it all, if I can stand it. Later! :)

I guess one should never assume. I read the thing this morning, and thought to myself, well if this Patrick Brennan, says he sounds like Gordon Lightfoot, I guess he must. I wasn't able to listen to him, until mnmouse posted his Web site. Sorry for the whole thing.

Don't worry about it, Jesse. I always find it interesting when someone describes his music as sounding like a famous singer. To tell you the truth, I've never heard anyone who sounds like Gord. I think he's probably a Gord fan, and he probably wishes he sounded like him.

This is one thing that Murray McLauchlan, told Gord once while he was interviewing Lightfoot.

He said, "your sound is so unique, nobody sounds like you."

So your probably right Cathy. Wondering though, what you think of Gary Fjellgaard, he did a CD with Valdy?

I like his guitar playing and the background music, and his songwriting is great... but, I'm not really crazy about his voice.

Same here, some folks think he sounds a bit like Gord, but I tell them not really.
