Money Movie host Eddie Driscoll dies, 81

HALIFAX (CP) - He dialled for dollars, hosted The Great Money Movie and introduced Nova Scotians to the world of cable television.

Eddie Driscoll, the wacky entertainer who impersonated dozens of quirky characters on WLBZ 2 in Bangor, Maine, died Saturday. He was 81.

"He was endearing to so many Atlantic Canadians," said Mike Clattenburg, who created The Trailer Park Boys television show.

"He was so funny and such an interesting face to see on television. I think he had just as big a following here in Atlantic Canada as he did in Maine."

Clattenburg, like many Nova Scotians, grew up watching the television personality's slapstick shenanigans on a daily basis because when cable TV arrived in the 1970s, most of the channels - there were only about five - were broadcast from Bangor.

"We loved him here," Clattenburg said.

Those who tuned in weekdays after school might remember Driscoll's distinct voice - "Time now for what's goin' on" - as he shared details about events such as church suppers and invited viewers to send in their public service announcements, promising to "put 'em on for ya."
