The other Sunday I was amazed to find myself watching on American television, for a nice change from NASCAR, the British Grand Prix from Silverstone,IMHO real motor car racing
A google alert today brought me to "WINDSOR'S WISDOM" on the British Independant Television site at:-

where he is talking about the upcoming United States F1 Grand Prix on July 2 at:-

Watkins Glen (up there in upstate New York-Aunburn Annie territory)

"Watkins Glen, obviously, because it was such a beautiful circuit in such a beautiful part of the world, held at such a beautiful time of the year (the fall)."
and
"I used to stay in Corning and drive through the woods at dawn, listening to Gordon Lightfoot on my slushmobile’s "stereophonic radio"

Well, NASCAR can be fun also. In fact, I was at a race in the southern US many years ago. I sat next to a loud, foul-mouthed, beer-swilling, tobacco-chewing, topless race car fan. And I had a nice conversation with her husband, too. :D

Ah, Watkins Glen. It's about an hour south of where I live, depending on route.

My husband and I spent part of our honeymoon nearby and every year we go back to the glen to hike the trails. Not so sure about this year, though. They've discontinued the shuttle bus service to the top of the glen; we used to hike to the top, then bus down again. Now we'll have to hoof it both ways (puff, puff.) Most of it's not bad on the way up -- until you reach Jacob's Ladder, where the ascent *feels* damn near vertical and I don't bring hiking boots and crampons. And of course there's always some little old lady who zips past me and makes me feel about 100.

We continue on to Corning, just south of WG, to shop along Market Street and have lunch at Murphy's near the Corning Glass Museum. And then we come home along the wine trail between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. Makes for a nice day trip.
