Non-GL Showdown #3 (see below for results of first two) Which do you prefer:
"Your Song" by Elton John
-vs-
"I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" by Jim Croce
Both of these songs are love songs that explain how and why they were written. Self-referential love songs!
.....
Previous results:
Showdown #1 is mired in controversy (there really isn't a controversy, but I'll try to provoke one just for fun), but it appears Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle" has defeated Cat Stevens' "Father and Son" 10-9.
Borderstone pinch-hit for me and created showdown #2, where Mark Lindsay's "Arizona" defeated Neil Diamond's "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" 4-2.

"...In a Song" is not Croce's best effort, by a long shot, but it's better than "Your Song", which I find incredibly clumsy and clunky in parts. "Anyway, the thing is, what I really mean...", the ungrammatical "It's for people like you that keep it turned on". I know, don't blame Sir Elton, because it's a nice tune; blame Bernie Taupin, as usual, for the lyrics...

Oh,Winter's Claw...you just had to go n' pick 2 songs that both hit me where I live equally, didn't you? :D
Elton's song is a youthful, romantic kind of song written by Bernie T. in his 20's and I can relate to the somewhat innocent, romantic & wide-eyed lyrics.
Croce's song, tells of a more settled down kind of male, the type who uses action & not words to express himself but ends up putting his thoughts on paper to make a song for the woman who means so much to him.
I guess I have to matchg my choice to my personality and go with "Your Song". Because...
Unlike the character in Croce's,I never have trouble saying those "3 little words" and letting someone know what they mean to me. (Sorry,Pennsylvania! )
Besides,I'm a hopeless romantic. ;)

Okay, it looks like the voting is over on this one. Poor voter turnout is responsible for deciding many important presidential elections; I'm glad there's nothing at stake here! (Remember in '04 when everyone said the young people were going to actually vote, and give the edge to Kerry? Didn't happen!)Anyway, "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" has defeated "Your Song" 5-3.
