View Full Version : Who could portray Gordon in life-story film?

http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif You know what would be so cool? If there was a movie made about GL's life! The question is,who could play him. Off-hand,I can't think of any "serious" actors that could do it,but get this. I was looking at the back of my copy of East Of Midnight and I could swear by the way Gord was grinning that he looked a little like Jim Carrey! (I hope that's not taken as a put down.) I think Jim could play the thinner/older Lightfoot but for the younger, stronger looking one,I can only picture Will Farrell of SNL. Again,no joke intended. He has sort of the same face, definetly the same hair but...could he and/or Carrey pull it off? So,what's your opinion? Let me know! P.S.-By the way,I've been deleting my past topics as soon as I'm sure there are no more responses. No sense leaving old topics up here. Borderstone,Out. H. & A.B. !

Interesting topic. I seriously doubt anyone would do the G.L. story, but then again some probably said the same about Buddy Holly. Nope...I can't see Gary Busey in this role. And I hesitate to mention it since he's had a string of bombs but how about...Kevin Costner? I think there is some resemblance today between the two, though not when Costner was younger and Gord was younger. Carrey might well be able to pull it off since he's a very good actor but I don't really see as much physical resemblance between Carrey and Gord as I do between Costner and G.L. That's my two Lincoln-head's worth!

Borderstone, that's no fun. So many new folks who find this site enjoy going back and reading the older topics. Not to mention that if you start a thread and delete that first message, the whole thread including all replies, is deleted. To delete your own messages is one thing, but it's really not fair to delete everyone else's http://www.corfid.com/ubb/frown.gif

I have to agree with you Janice. Besides...us "older" guys can't remember whether we've posted to a topic or not, or just thought about posting, without going back and looking!

I agree with the Kevin Costner, I also heard that Kevin Spacey was going to do a Bobby Darin movie. In some pictures of Spacey I can see a resemblence to Darin. I think that would be a good movie. But as with the Buddy Holly movie it has been a long time since these singers have passed and Kevin Costner might just not age as well as our Gordon in years to come.

I would have to say Bryan Cranston--"Dr. Tim Watley". He was the dentist on Seinfeld. He is a dead ringer for Lightfoot. Kinda even sounds the same when he talks. He looks like a young Lightfoot.

The other person that comes to mind is Eric Braeden from that soap opera. http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/PersonDetail/personid-26175

Gord himself said he looks like Eric LOL

I just saw some old footage of Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac) and thought I saw
a pretty good resemblance to GL.
They looked somewhat alike when they both had alot of hair and beards.

I didn't think about the fact that everyone elses replies would get deleted too. I guess I just thought that once a topics been answered there was no more need for it. I also thought that since we have topics going back to '99,I din't think I should clutter up the board. Anyway, yeah that guy from Seinfeld looks pretty much like him. Is he the on who had the Penthouse Mags. in his office? If so,that episode put me off of seeing a dentist for awhile. Good choice though. I wish I could play the role, but I look very little like him. I can sing like him though. Borderstone,O.H. & A.B. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Yep.lol He's the dentist that had the Penthouse mags in his office. Also the dentist that was going to take Elaine to the SuperBowl and also the same one that converted to the Jewish faith so he could tell Jewish jokes. He is also the dad on Malcolm in the middle.

For the young Gord - Luke Perry. Maybe with a perm, he could do the middle aged Gord too. And I couldn't help but think as I watched the SAG awards Sunday night that Clint Eastwood wouldn't make a bad "Waiting for You" and beyond Gord.

Clint Eastwood's a good choice-- ever see his movie "Honkey Tonk Man"? (at least I think that's what it was called.

Too much emphasis on a look-a-like and not enough comment on who can capture style, poise, manner and presentation. Who can emit the aura, articulate what goes on in the head that produces the beauty and complexity of music and the poetry of the lyrics. Who can portray the man, bring what's inside to life and have it transposed to film; this transcends the music and also must include the personal side of his life. This is a difficult one. Musicians are generally, by nature, very complex, and the simplicity of movies loses that which actually forms and makes the artist. Difficult.

You know something? I just realized this today. Now,don't make fun but I'm serious. I took a good look at myself in the mirror and you know,I actually do kind of look like an early Lightfoot! Not perfectly, but pretty darn close! What's more,I can sing like he does and with a little practice I think I could bring out the essence of the man. I wonder,is Ron Howard available to direct? Once again,I'm not joking. I can't post a picture but I kid you not! Borderstone, outta here & Alberta Bound! Or is it Hollywood http://www.corfid.com/ubb/confused.gif ???????

The tough thing about biopics is that most
of them stink. Either boring or superficial or glossy praise or hung up on hitting the main public high points of the person's life rather than being character driven.
This can be especially true when portraying
an artist, writer, etc. as visualizing the creative process is rather difficult. Sitting down and writing on paper, thinking, strumming for hours isn't quite the same as a car chase or explosions.

But anyway, Ethan Hawke might make an interesting choice.

Ideally, the person cast should be able to
play & sing. I think that was a contributing factor to why "Coal Miner's Daughter" or "The Buddy Holly Story" were superior efforts. Mostly though, it was in the writing.

psa has got it right.

Sorry, Borderstone, but I could say I look like an early Lightfoot, although my mirror may have shattered, and I have performed his music for over 30 years. That would mean I can play guitar and sing, so can the chimp I saw with the music grinder, but let's not be presumptuous and think that this brings out the essence of the man. Only joking!

psa, you did get it right.

Boy,was this topic far down on the threads list! 3 months already? Anyway,I'm posting in here today because last night I was watching an episode of 3's Company from 1982 in which Janet buys a blonde wig to make herself more appealing to men. She meets a guy named Bill and he likes her at first but then Janet turns dumb blonde and he dumps her. The man playing Bill is an actor named Robert Swick and aside from being a 99% Gordon Lightfoot twin (think Summer Side LP Cover) he has a vocal tone that is nearly equal to Gord's. I saw this on Nick at Nite and it "might" be on again this evening. If it is watch for it and see if you agree or not. I only hope he's still living, after all,it was 21 years ago. He may still look mostly the same, you never know. It's been the B! Catch ya on the flipside of Sundown! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif

I've always told my wife that Eric from the Y and R and Clint remind me of Gordon.[I've always wondered about the Y and R part in Restless] As far as capturing style, poise etc.,I think either one could do it easily and present day looks could be a tossup. If I had to pick one, I would say ,take away Clint's .44 and replace it with a D-18 and "take one". That fella who plays Aragon in the "Lord of the Rings" movie. I think he's fair-haired in real life, too.

Old Dan
06-08-2003, 02:50 PM
What about Sam Shepard as the current, 'older' Gord?

Also, I have thought about this, and what would make the movie different from other bio pics, which, yes, usually are awful, is that one of the main characters, besides Gord, but equal it him, is Canada himself. You can't separate his music, nor the man from Canada, and it needs to be celebrated in the film, too. It made him what he is, influenced him, provided succor and inspiration, motivation, healing... Canada has been an endless well for Gord's talent.
So the film would have to be a bit 'bigger' than just a retelling of the statistics of his life.

Does that make ANY sense?

Borderstone
06-08-2003, 05:33 PM
Yes,Old Dan that makes perfect sense to me. If this bi-opic were made, just focusing on Gordon Lightfoot alone would only be telling 1/2 the story. Showing the overall Canadian perspective would definetly make it complete. We all know here on this site that Gord is held in such high regard there that when the 1 time group Northern Lights, made up of famous singers from Canada, recorded Tears Are Not Enough for African Relief Funding,Gordon was naturally their first choice to be in the project and sing the very 1st verse of the song. I knew there was some fact missing from this topic and Old Dan hit the nail on the head! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Thanks, man! Now that we have all of these factors in place,I wonder who we should contact to take up this aspiration of a project. Personally,I would choose Ron Howard. Not just because he won an Oscar(c) last year but because of why he won it. His direction of,"A Beautiful Mind", brought out a perfectly realized portrail of the real life main character. I know Mr. Howard would bring out the humanity and overall persona of GL and would very evenly work in the Canadian point of view. Anyone agree? Let it be known. It's been the B! Catch ya on the flipside of Sundown! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif (Let's see, what to wear to the Academy Awards...hmmm..... http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well it's 9 months later now and it's been a year and 5 months since i brought this up.

...but tonight while watching a M*A*S*H re-run I figured out who else could play him and have the strongest resemblence. Mike Farrell who played B.J. on the show after he grew that moustache.

Check out LSH's current thread with her pics and sketch of Gordon and then (to anyone who can find a pic to put up here)put a picture of Farrell next to one of them.

I still contend Will Farrell could play the young one and now Mike Farrell (no relation) could truly play the older one. He's about the same age as GL,I believe. I never noticed the similarities until tonight. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/eek.gif

If we could only find someone inteested enough in doing a film like this. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif Been me. Later http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif

Watchman,I think with a bit of Hollywood's special effects make up,Mike could look like he does now but Laurel did have a point about him being too tall, although they can change that these days too. I still contend tha Will F. could be Gord, with the right make up and a bit of weight loss.

Watch the episode of MASH though, where Winchester refuses to talk and Pierce & BJ try to make him. I think he (Mike) looked like him then.

Jaqouin Phoenix (Hope he will forgive me for the misspelling of his name)do his own singing in the Johnny Cash movie??

Yeah Patti,03/13,pretty weird huh? ;) Then,I always have felt this topic drifted off and was incomplete,so maybe it was destined to resurface with Mr. Parks now being in the picture.

Shouldn't Michael Parks be quite a bit older now?
I thought his series was on when our kids where young and now we are grandparents.

For some reason,on the subject of the thread,Gerald Macreany just came to mind! You know (Simon & Simon / Major Dad)?
Or is he too tall too? http://www.corfid.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif Boy,if this keeps up,we may end up casting Don Knotts! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/eek.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif (Oh,wait...too old.) http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif U-m-m, hasn't Don Knotts passed on?? I think so,

I really wish people would notice the dates of messages before they post. ;)

Louise,I posted that humorous comment about Don Knotts back on August 16th,2004. That was a good 1 year & 1/2 before he passed on in February of 2006.

I was certainly kidding of course.

What about Jack Wagner who plays Nick Marone in "The Bold and the Beautiful?" He's not just a soap star. I've seen him in a couple of movies and he's a pretty good actor. He could easily play a younger Gordon and with makeup, etc., could portray Gordon in later years.

Just a thought.

Sorry about the repeat. I have absolutely no idea why that message was printed twice. When I try to delete one, it takes them both away. So please accept my apology.

Cat-Writer your two messages are worded slightly different.
If the system was responsible for the "double posts",they would be worded exactly the same.

What I think is that you tried to post the first one and it went but maybe it took to long so you typed out another.

I'm not nit-picking at you or picking on you, just pointing out that "exact" double posts are usually from hitting "add reply" to many times.

Overall though,no biggie apologies aren't necessary. ;)

I still say Billy Bob would be able to pull it off. Tall, lanky, and what a artist.

I think a good young Gordon could be portrayed by an actor named Chris Pratt.. here are some of his pictures..I think he's pretty much a dead ringer

Had to bring this back to the top. Chris Pratt is on the cover of EW magazine this week. All I could think of was how much he looks like young Gord:

Steve Forrest reminded me of Gordon so much in the 1977 mini-series "Testimony of Two Men'' in so many ways. It was a great story, too. He died in 2013.

I still don't know how to post a photo but there's a promotional photo on the series with Barbara Parkins on Google that shows him where he looks so much like Gordon. That man had lots of charisma.

Someone mentioned Michael Parks a few years ago, but he is in his 70's now, so too old.
