As some of you might have noticed I keep a daily watch on Ebay auctions using my quick link to the listing sorted newest items first(currently showing a somewhat overestimated claim at the top
"1593 items found for gordon lightfoot") at:-
http://www.ebaylightfoot.notlong.com
I do this partly to find new items for my growing collection of GL album and single picture sleeve artwork. Today I was rewarded with a "MEGARARE PORTUGUESE 45"
http://i1.ebayimg.com/03/i/06/41/39/da_1.JPG
http://cgi.ebay.com/GORDON-LIGHTFOOT-MEGARARE-PORTUGUESE-45_W0QQitemZ4835831273QQcategoryZ306QQrdZ1QQcmdZVi ewItem
Interestingly the seller discosziggy2 of Madrid claims to:-
"INCLUDE 1.- SUNDAWN 2.- TOO LATE FOR PRAYIN' "
John Fowles
Obviously the singer is some sort of Minstrel of the Sundawn??
Another auction is for a vinyl copy of the original "Sit Down Young Stranger" album with a sticker on it:-
http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/0/7/4/5/7/3/webimg/6357913_o.jpg
John Fowles
to the high side of the bay, 'cross the bay
Will it ever end I’ve been all the way to biscayne bay
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
With a heavenly sky and moonlight on the bay
She’ll be headin’ south through biscayne bay Into the open sea
and of course:-
Christian Island (Georgian Bay)

Cool sleeve for Sundown but I have to say...I have never liked pictures of celebrities (especially my fav's)smoking or holding a cigarette! tongue.gif
It's not a very flattering thing to have your picture taken with something hanging from your mouth. Ick! He'd have been cool enough without it.

http://i3.ebayimg.com/03/i/06/56/de/83_1_b.JPG
the seller one "deadlywolf" is in Rae Edzo, NT Canada
and he must be pretty desperate as his reason for selling is:-
"All discs are in excellent condition and were only listened to once.
My wife can not stand Gordon Lightfoot so either she goes or the collection goes!
Hence after much consultation the collection is up for auction.
This is a wonderful collection and will fill your life with as much joy as mine was,
until I met my wife.
Please save my marriage and buy this collection from me. PLEASSSE!!!!'

Wonderful, truly impressive, compilation and collection of items. Thank you for the e-bay refrence, I will have to start looking myself. I've been listening to the albums since I bought my first one in 1967. Borderstone, please realize that the cigarette was a cultural thing at the time, and not what you would consider politically incorrect. This is a great post.

sure like to buy that collection , I have 'em all but Ii've gone thru *3* Songbook sets , 4 sundowns, and 3 Old Dan's records. i treasure my old LP's the most. I've got the "master" audiophile copy of Sundown LP i wonder what that is worth... no matter. boy If my wife of 25 years had said its me or the CD's.....hmm......j/k poor guy up there that sux. I am having trouble with CD's "going out of print" allegedly in Colorado on releases since 1982 , noteably last 4 and songbook. - steve geodeticman

There are a pair of Canadian produced GL Karaoke CDs available from:-
http://www.karaokecloset.com/singking/main.php
http://www.karaokecloset.com/singking/images/products/sk008.png
Volume 1
and would you believe?
http://www.karaokecloset.com/singking/images/products/sk009.png
Volume 2
I recalled that a young (?) lady (Janie) from singking posted here when these were issued
Perhaps our resident artist (ZR) should contact Janie to try to offer his services to improve their offering's desultory appearance, sorry Janie but these two show precious litle imagination IMHO
and after a search I found the topic at:-
http://www.corfid.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=003035
That March 2005 topic reveals that said Janie is Member # 1036
I re-air this now because I spotted one of these on ebay at:-

And here are a fine pair for Bonnie (bjb) and anyone else reading this from Edmonton:-
http://i8.ebayimg.com/05/i/06/ed/0b/02_1.JPG
the Albertan seller opines at:-
http://cgi.ebay.com/Gordon-Lightfoot-1970s-Concert-Poster-2-Edmonton_W0QQitemZ7612249146QQcategoryZ104938QQrdZ 1QQcmdZViewItem
"This is a one-of-a-kind Original Concert Poster that was displayed at Mike's News Stand - who was the main ticket seller in
the City of Edmonton during the 1960's and 1970's. It appears to me that this poster was hand painted onto thick cardboard
style material. It is the same type of material that was used for all weather style signs in the 1960's. I am not sure of the
year of this Concert but it had to be early 1970's"
Had he gone to the Javascript day site at:-
http://www.kerrnow.notlong.com
he could have found that Tuesday November 19th was 2 days after Gord's birthday in 1963 or 1968 or 1974 but not 1979 or the leap year 1980. Take yer pick
For the second one the same seller at:-
http://cgi.ebay.com/Gordon-Lightfoot-1970s-Concert-Poster-Edmonton-Canada_W0QQitemZ7612239099QQcategoryZ104938QQrdZ1Q QcmdZViewItem

The same "gentleman" has now added another interesting unauthorised bootleg CD
(actually a 2-CD set) of the aborted 1974 Massey hall recording that was abandoned after Gord had spent (I read somewhere very recently but cannot refind dammit) $20,000-$25,000 setting up the recording "session" because he was disatisfied with the sound because of a broken fingernail.
He must have had very bittle nails that year see Bru's breathless recount of how he nearly sat on her lap at London's Royal Albert Hall when he dropped down into the audience to cadge an emery board see:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000069#000024

Those who are fortunate to already have this will know that it contains very nice "Live" versions of the following unreleased songs
Tennessee Stud
Pleasures of the Night
Divorce Country Style
Partners
and an earlier live Stone Cold Sober
this 1974 concert has been discussed here before at:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001842.html
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000069.html
It all goes to prove how fastidious Gord is which means that he probably strongly disapproves of the existance and ready disemination by means of mp3s of many unauthorised gems

Just as Walter (broderstone) is hung up his Billboard chart positions,so was I in my later schooldays obsessed with the UK hit parade,Our favo(u)rite source of information in those days was the http://www.nme.com/layout/nme_logo.gif (http://www.nme.com/)
no not the "enemy" but the "New Musical Express" a weekly Black and White tabloid
publication described by answers.com as:-
"The New Musical Express (better known as the NME) is a music magazine in the UK which has been published weekly since March 1952."
I still have a few cuttings especially from 1959 with details of that year's plane crash near Clear Lake Iowa that took the life of my then musical hero Buddy Holly.Fast forward to 1971 I was then back in the UK, having become a Lighthead in a big way, and had of course bought the IYCRMM LP, but news of Gord was to put it mildly scant. All the more interesting therefore to be reminded that in 1971 the NME actually had an article on Gord in an issue I sadly missed but possibly Bruna has squirelled away??
This has just come up on ebay again at:-
http://cgi.ebay.com/Gordon-Lightfoot-UK-Interview-1971_W0QQitemZ9135066483QQcategoryZ2312QQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem

I recently found that the NME had itself been the subject of an American University
"Class Project" see Contents listing for 1953-1969 at:-
http://www.skidmore.edu/~gthompso/britrock/NME/index.html
Now Skidmore University is in Saratoga Springs, New York home of the Caffe Lena and two great GL tribute band concerts see:-
http://mageenet.org/LightfootTributeBand/home.shtml
http://mageenet.org/LightfootTributeBand/jpgs/DSC00130-400.jpg
of note is this that I found on
http://www.skidmore.edu/~gthompso/britrock/NME/nme6512.html
where I read a note from December 1965:-
"American folk stars on February tour [The Ian Campbell Folk Group headlines a tour with Gordon Lightfoot and Ian and Sylvia.]"
1971 is of course ouside the timeframe of 1953-1969 that the above referenced page covers

another nice new Ebay item yesterday a poster for "Saturday November 24th"
(the seller said "This is an unknown year promotional concert poster")
but using the Javascript "Find any day for a given date:" at:-
http://cornish-family.netfirms.com/findday.htm
or http://www.kernow.notlong.com
(Kernow is Cornwall,UK if you did not know)
that was either 1973 or 1979
and per:-
http://www.lightfoot.ca/1979.htm
Gord did not do such a concert in 1979 so 1973 it must have been

This is very interesting Sir John, Im constantly looking for old Lightfoot performances like the soundstage one, I have that on VHS which I recorded in 1980 on a PBS station from Maine. The sound is terrible, and it last only 1 hour. I remember when he introduces his then new song, "ON THE HIGH SEAS", he must have been playing a joke on the audience as he says, " This one is called 'On The Tv."

Hey Sir John this is a great post. Are 8 track tapes worth good money these days? I doubt it J-J although I am amazed how often GL ones appear on ebay, obviously collector's pieces for those obsessives who already have the vinyl cassette and CD, Susan still has 30 assorted 8-track cartridges AND a home-machine to play them on,which I think still works. The 30 include 4 GL(EW,SD,SSOL,and DSR) and, don't tell her I told you, John Denver with the Muppets and one by Mr Nose (Manilow) himself!!

Bru, am I correct in thinking that "quid" is slang for "pounds" - similar to how we use "bucks" to mean "dollars"?

A recently posted auction gives UK fans a rare chance to acquire the excellent Canadian 3-CD box set that includes all 5
United Artist albums:-

I don't think I have ever seen it on ebay.co.uk before, and doubt that it was ever on sale In the UK.
My own copy was bought in 1994 in Montreal by an English friend visiting Canada who was armed with a comprehensive list of
all albums (vinyl and CD) that I at that time owned, in addition to this box set she also found to my delight the 1993-issued Waiting For You CD which in those primitive pre-internet days I had never even heard of.
Fortunately by 1998 I had internet access and heard of APPT in time to grab the solitary copy on sale in the HMV store on
Oxford Steet London on June 21st

in reply to Janice's query about the slang term "quid"
I found this site:-
http://www.businessballs.com/moneyslanghistory.htm
which states amongst other theories that
"The slang money expression 'quid' seems first to have appeared in late 1600's England, derived from Latin (quid meaning
'what', as in 'quid pro quo' - 'something for something else'). "
I have previously written about the pound sign itself (£) on the Newsgroup see:-
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.music.lightfoot/msg/a2dadc0bfb53798b?hl=en&
Noow regarding the US slang term "buck" two entertaining theories are on:-

And now one for the underpriviledged hooligan wannabee concert goers down under on auction from Brisbane is this at:-

this bill is billed according to the seller as
"1975 ORIGINAL STREET POSTER"
but September 19th was on a Thursday in 1974
when Gord did indeed play in Sydney and obviously survived!!

I cannot read all the text on it but fortunately the seller says it is
"Poster text is: Gordon Lightfoot 8:30 till 11 P.M. Thursday September 14 University Hall Wolfville 1.50 advanced tickets student building rear"
And yesterday a Warner Bros attempt to muscle in on the United Artists regurgitation antics with their own compilation
note Made in 1981 i.e. released after GG and GG2 and this example attributed to Germany but I recall seeing this on sale in the UK in both vinyl and cassette versions
