Since I know that a lot of folks rarely visit the 'Small Talk' forum I'm taking the liberty of moving The Watchman's excellent post over here. It would be very cool if all corfid members put themselves on the map. Here it is:

I saw this on another site and thought it would be cool to see on a virtual map where all Lightfoot's fans are located. I set up an account there for us and it's very easy to add yourself. No personal information is needed and you can also post a picture. The default setting is for North America but you can zoom in and out wherever you want.

The directory notes that our #1278 member signed up yesterday. The new map has 28 members listed. So we've only got 1,250 to go. Not bad for only a few days.

BillW it was a boring day, so I did some searching. There are 64 pages of registered members, 18 of those have listings of people that registered but never left a post, 16 pages of people that left 1 post, out of the last 30 pages 21 pages of registered users had less than 20 posts. Wonder how many still read this site and just never post.

and leave a suitable message and with luck the requisite Admin guy , which I assume to be the erstwhile watchman Al will sort you out.
In passing I noted the pretty canine picature displayed by "someone". Is that Mary an indication that you are a bitch??
I thought there was a very nice shot of you there before. feeling shy??
Not so the Sydney hooligan who chose to display himself I presume squatting on his outside "dunny"
I am most impressed with the mapping facility which looks like the handiwork of Google earth no it might be digitalglobe/earth atlas.
Whatever even with my slow dial up with patience and after I got used to the zoom and direction controls I was able to capture the following small screenshots
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/sherborne/map1.jpg

the general Bristol/Yeovil/Southampton area I know so well having been my own company's salesman for nigh on 30 years.
now to zoom in:-

Nearly there

Bingo!

Now lets try the "satellite" view:-

Nar too much cloud (this is England remember)
Oh well it'll have to be the "hybrid" view:-

Thanks. I got a deal for you. It's a three for one. I'll take your Mother-in-Law in trade for my three siblings? All three live on the west coast and they're too cheap to buy a plane ticket to come and visit you, and the only time they'll ever call you is if someone in the family they don't like dies. Whadda ya say?

Oh, hmmm, gee, did that maybe sound a little bitter? Can't imagine why that would be :)

Well Not Allright
I have heard frem Bru that when she tried to show another picture of herself (her existing one is a very nice study of her droolling over a "Lightfoot Trail" signboard in some obscure Ontario town they call Orillia) she is told that London and Surrey sre both invalid names!! I tried Croydon and Shirley and got the same stoopid result.
I checked the site's FAQs and found a provision to request adding more places to their obviously woefully inadeqate database
I also note that forum founder Florian has yet to reveal himself but in today's UK Travel Telegraph email is a short article extolling the unique blend of the historic and the modern of his home city at:-

Oh dear.
Mr Fowles yet again puts 2 & 2 together and comes up with 5.
Its not the names of the towns John ! Its the identity of the requester. Use a pseudonym. Try Sydney Steve ! This name engenders serious credibility & respect (and is nearly as acceptable as American Express around the world...)
John has overlooked the fact that most of the modern software will not recognise questions from anyone with an internet history of being of a certain sort (if you Corfiders catch my drift)[lol]...

This doesn't explain Bru's problems though..Must have been a glitch in her case...

Once you have a smaller file (which also then has the benefit of being quicker to load for dial-up readers) you have to find somewhere else on the internet to store it. It so happens that I have recently found a superb free website outfit that allows hotlinking and I am working on a fairly simple tutorial on how to use it. Oh do shut your face Stevo. Hi All. The pic seems to have caused a little excitment. It was taken back of Massey Hall Sat 26 May before the concert. Gord was explaning and showing how a guy run off the sreet and into his dressing room in Rochester with a camera. Gord said he grabbed him as in pic, clicked then run out, and he hasent seen him since. Anyone know who it was?
Anyway my thanks goes to the stranger who took pic. his name is Mac from Massachusetts. I hadent relised at the time he had taken such a great pic.He was such a nice guy, because during the time of taking the pic and before the concert he went and got it developed and came looking for and found me in the Massey bar.

I will try sending a Private Message to him and see if he knows anything (it was Al who started the map after all)

I don't know if the original map is retrievable or not. Frappr would not let me choose the name corfid for the map claiming it was already in use. But that's standard practice. Most websites protect a name for anywhere from a few weeks to months after it's been deleted. But on the other hand there could be an on/off switch to these maps too and it may have been deliberately or inadvertantly turned off. I have no clue. It's all I could do to create one, never mind making sense of the ins and outs of the site.

Hi guys the "frapper-mapper" is a great idea !

Am preparing a photo of my signed-by-Gord canoe paddle (per Sir John's suggestion) to attach to my map entry ( us odd and wordy mapgeeks call them nodes, pass-points, pug-points and other utterly fascinating cartographic terms to most end-users... not..).

If it is of interest to anyone ( raising shields, captain...) the satellite imagery-based process is the same as mapquest's newest on-line geoprocessor, and originated from USGS Terrabyte Project.( U.S. Geologocal Survey ).

if you all new how much interactive editing and cubic hull-warp polynnomial splines it used to take us in the mid-80's just to get the linear features (as in the mapquest version with center-of-oil road centerlines) to overlay correctly with the imagery, you would think that was the cretacous period.

This excellent application of the Terrabyte project is the same exact map engine less all the linear features as mapquest, and also is appearing on higher-end handheld GPS-receivers for gear-toting mountain-folk hacks like me.. :)

Well I digress. It obviously excites me to see spatial data e.g. maps and remotely-sensed imagery become so user-friendly a desktop product. It used to be the career-making or breaking pervue of GIS "power-users" waiting for one tile to process on a rather large mainframe.

I'm adding my 2 locations in Colorado if I can stay awake here in a minute, after scouting it out ahead. What a wonderful addition to corfid !

Thank you for adding this cork-popper exciting addition to corfid, from a loquacious old mapper in Colorado ! - Steve (GEO)

geodeticman

Watchman, and everyone, err.... sorry I did not read all the preceeding discussion of the deletion of the corfid map after, as John put it ... the "run-in" Watchman had with me.

I would rather have thought it the other way around (at first), but I sincerely feel I am the boob if the umbrage I took, followed by the umbrage Watchman took.... err.... well caused retraction of the first map. That explains why I could not get into it on first try and looked at others instead. Do I understand this sequence of events correctly ? Boy do I feel stupid...

I sure feel silly that two nice GL fans could take issue with one another over such a little thing, I feel bad about this and take responsibility. Watchman - (Al ?) - your inclusion of this interactive map thread was certainly a great idea and I applaud you.

I was not aware of it or its subsequent withdrawal until now, AFTER reading my previous enthusiastic map-guy waxings posted just before this.

Watchman (Al) - please accept my apologies for not graciously accepting your straightforward and well-meant constructive critique on my addmitedly hard-to-read starting stuff. You were right ! Everyone - don't worry I am not starting the "umbrage" tack again.

Rather, I humbly apologize to Watchman AND the group if my unwarranted lashback caused such a loss at first (or when ?) of this wonderful addition to corfid by Watchman.

Watchman, please accept my apologies and a tip-o-the-hat on the link to this interactive geo-coded satellite mapping engine. I am very sorry to over-react, as I look back and read. You are to be commended.

Al please do not think I am being a sycophant or am being disingenuous when I retract and about-face on former ramblings of mine that hit a bit too hard on my part. Keep on with the cool work and posts ! To Gordon !

Sincerely, Steve Dunbar DA mapster... :)

I have now reentered my two locations:-

I have now made a screenshot showing the two of us Brits (me and Ron from Waterlooville) who have so far joined up
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/sherborne/england.jpg

I also noticed that compared to how frappr was originally presented it looks like they have updated their format. In particular the "add yourself" entry form is quite different and the existing member's pix that previously were shown on the right in a "columnar" style are now shown under the map in a scrolling "slideshow" presentation.
there is also now under the "add yourself" area a section headed "markers" that lists the current members(4 so far)
Let's be having you!!!
My bet is that they must have temporarily taken the whole site down to upload the revised version then omitted to restore each group's existing content. If so it was nice of them to tell us!!

http://www.frappr.com/corfid Not exactly Charlady
for one it was not a complete link
that would have been
http://www.frappr.com/ ?a=showmap&gid=62138&landing=1
No it just will not show as a complete hyperlink
which when I copied it and pasted it in complete it opened a generic frappr page but deleting the extraneous space (after the .com/ gives
http://www.frappr.com/?a=showmap&gid=62138&landing=1
Lo and behold it opens the original corfid group with the world map showing all 77 members and oodles of pix including a scrolling display of most of Mary's Florida shenanigans
Golly just as I was composing this I got my own "John Fowles's Frappr Update" email
saying in part:-
"... and more! Click below to see more new members:
http://www.frappr.com/sitdownyoungstranger" (http://www.frappr.com/sitdownyoungstranger)
but no mention of the original corfid group
so perhaps when I signed on at the corfid group I failed to provide my email addy (which I had done for the SDYS group)
I noticed that the old (corfid) map only has red pins for "people" whereas the new SDYS group that violet started has red pins for ladles and blue pins for jellyspoons!!
How odd!!
John Fowles
Of course unfortunately this means that once again we have to put up with the earlier disgusting picture of the Sydney hooligan:-

I think that on balance I prefer the later almost equally disgusting "smelly armpit" picture!!!

ack! Yes Yes dear Charge d'affaires
but you over corrected the original hyperlink which was:-
http://www.frappr.com/ ?a=showmap&gid=62138&landing=1
I said that there seemed to be an "extraneous space (after the .com/)"
If you peek carefully at my second screenshot above you should spot that removing the said space produces:-
http://www.frappr.com/?a=showmap&gid=62138&landing=1 compared to your most recent attempt:-

John,

What is the upshot of all this please ?
Type slowly so I can follow.
Do we now have 2 maps accessible? Did it turn out that we didn't need to restart a new one and that it was not in fact deleted in a moment of fury ?
What's the John Dory ?

PS Stop baiting the Queen or you will be back where you belong...

Yes it appears so although the correct address for the original tells you to get lost and as Violet found trying to resurrect the group using plain "corfid" leads nowhere fast

Hey Stevo if you are so obviously adept at manipulating images and are that damn good you had better take part in one or other of the artwork topics.
For starters since you are such a Carefree guy can you concentrate on a "C/Highway" Picture Sleeve

I found a real picture of him properly restrained

I also found an amusing Castaway parody featuring Forrest Gump's alter ego Tom Hanks

John, I could not help but try to help in some way, seeins' how I am the MAPster. Simply a point of interest I hope for you. You seem to be a very detail oriented man, with, as you put it, a desire to understand. Banking on this keen interest, a bit of trivia. As you noted, regarding the mapping engine's database of annotation being mis-spelled:

Per John, as follows:
<snip>
I have now reentered my two locations:-
my current New Jersey one with the picture of me in Sherborn MA and one showing me in front of my house in my home town of Sherborne (note how Americans have this odd habit of either mis-spelling words or omitting letters....they also in Massachusetts mispelt Barnstaple as Barnstable)...Dorset <snip>

As I mentioned farther above, this mapping engine, essentially the same as mapquest's alternative program, hails from U.S.Geological Survey's Terramapper project. It was also partnered by an outsourced *bigggg* private software company as a general contractor of sorts.

As such, with multiple layers of farmed-out labor, it is subject to the limitations that have come close at times to paralyzing USGS' work in cartographic data entry such as the annotation in question.

in aproximately 1999, USGS weathered what was called "Black Monday", obvious to GL fans as a name applied to other events as well...

This was a day essentially of pink slips, firing, laying-off, early retirements, "re-purposing", and in sum total nearly 50% of their Cartographic professionals, paraprofessionals, and technicians were let go, flooding the industry with Government personnel.

This sad event was in response to legislation referred to as the Brook's Act that required that (among other things) 50% of mapping be outsourced to private industry, in keeping with the precept that the U.S. Government should not compete with the private sector, e.g. private Mapping Companies.

Point being, these private sector companies, austensibly could do the same work "faster and cheaper" and profit to the benefit of the constituency the Government in principle serves.

However, as farming out so often does, it actually hamperes the output quality of what is a painstakingly detailed and normally thoroughly researched part of the work, despite it not falling into the pervue of professional Cartographers in larger projects like this.

Unfortunately, having been involved in many contracts myself to outsource mapping services to private companies, one of the means by which they can do it cheaper (and often worse) is by (you guessed it) farming-out the labor intensive non-professional components (such as annotation - street names , town names, etc....) and other quickly-trained data-entry map database elements.

The foreign outsourced companies in particular, employing extremely cheap labor in "second (and third) world" companies, adds a huge amount of annotation in databases ....such as these. The emphasis, in order to make contractual time obligations, is of course speed. And of course speed in detail-oriented work breeds errors and omissions such as you are seeing.

I have seen outsourced contracts in satellite mapping projects post-processing work where the private vendor bidding actually would offer two prices. One would be be made in the "good-ole U.S.A.), and the other, for aproximately 40PERCENT LESS was to openly send the labor-intensive work to their "foreign subsidiary" (read:sweatshop) often in Malaysia et al .

It seemed of at least mild interest to point this out as things have gotten rolling again in what sounds like the first corfid map still existing, to my relief as I worried previously that my "run-in" with Watchman may have spurred a suspected retraction of the first map. I now understand this is not true.

This Terramapper project is also widely spoken of on the internet as being the brainchild and effort of one of the "giants" in the software business. Such company's name will not be mentioned here, as I understand Bill G(oops) has an army of lawyers eating company authorized junk food and looking with NSA tenacity for any cheap defamation of the project (j/k Bill).

It, in fact, despite errors and omissions, is an incredible piece of work placed free of use into the public domain, as you all noted with glee in the novelty of the product.

Rather than being able (yet) to make a salient contribution to the problem you guys worked through, I thought my only area of input could be thoroughly little-known minutia pertaining to the annotation that is contained in this mapping engine, and at least save some face as a mapper myself ;)

Does this also mean, if the first corfid map *is* still intact, that I do not need to grovel in apology to its progenitor ? (j/k Watchman... err... just an observation :) ) All in good fun.

Since of course all people think idle shop-talk specific to their field is utterly fascinating to the world, and represents over 75% of known information in the whole world as well... I did hope this little fact would help alleviate some of the frustration encountered when annotation was missing or wrong.

Just occurred to me this info would not do a bit of good. In true government tradition, or at least historic teutonic form as Trevanian would say (any British folk know this author?) I will therefor proceed unsullied by the facts, and make an error better by making it bigger. hehe - Steve all in fun.

Changes , personal abuse of any kind is normally a no no on a message board. It would not surprise anyone that your posts are being deleted if they cross that line.

It may be time for you to take some of your own advice and head to another area in cyberspace where you feel more appreciated. Without fully understanding all the issues involved , I confess I initially felt elements of sympathy for you, but your drama queenesque hysterical rants and tirades which would appear to be more in keeping with excerpts from a B grade soap opera have brought some "changes" in my attitude.

For someone who was professing a christian ethic only recently a remarkable set of "changes" has come over you and they do you no credit.

I suggest you go and take a couple of the coloured pills the nice Doctor prescribed for you, listen to some soothing music and please do not kick the cat. There's a good little changes - this site does not require more than one of the delusional variety. I already occupy that niche.
Unfortunately there is no emoticon which adequately describes my view of your rants. This is probably because they would cross over into your sphere of innappropriate rudeness. Also they all depict the head rather than what I would rather choose ,which is that of someones rear end. :D
