No,not a message about that song but a question for you. What Gordon Lightfoot song either when you first heard it or even now, brought or brings tears to your eyes? Or even makes you bawl like a baby? :( *sniff*.
Only one "really" does and a second one comes pretty close. The second one is "The Pony Man",I get a bit misty eyed but I don't cry outright.
The one that "can" do it? "My Love For You" :( In a serious relationship I had last year,I dedicated that song to the woman I was seeing. (Yes,we were in full tilt love! :) ) Unfortunately, after being together quite awhile,we went our sepearte ways. (Sorry,no details.) I still miss her closeness so,I try to avoid listening to that song.
I do on occaision, just to see if I can get through it. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
I'm better than I was nearly a year ago,so don't turn the topic into a "poor B" kind of thing okay? ;)
Like GL said,"I'll Be Alright". :) (I'm looking around again by the way. ;) )
At just the right (wrong?) time, Clouds of Loneliness can sure get to me. But I still love it.

Heck, there's something about the Old Dan's Records album overall that does something, but I don't know how to explain it.

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face can evoke feelings of longing and loneliness. It doesn't make me cry or anything though. I don't think I would say any of his songs make me cry, but some of them are certainly poignant and strike something within me.

I didn't elucidate on my song choice, "Softly," but, now will. The first time I heard it, I was driving. I was so overcome by emotion, I was sobbing and had to pull the car to the side of the road, I was that much affected. It brought up memories for me, painful ones, sad ones, but, it's not like I'm going to avoid listening to that song now. I'm going to play it TWICE (by hitting the repeat button on my CD player) whenever it comes on so I can just *totally* get into that song -- it's just that evocative.

"I'm Not Supposed to Care" gets me everytime, that not being ready to let go.
"First Time Ever I Saw You Face" reminds me of an old boyfriend who died in '79.(It ws 'our' song).

"I'll Tag Along" sounds like a positive song but the mood of it strikes me in a somewhat sad manner. I get a bit misty eyed with that one also, along with Wild Strawberries.
Wild Strawberries talks about "Is it really true, that you can really never win?" (Paraphrasing) That just hits me in the gut! :(
In Restless he mentions "When you think about your Dad". My Father's been gone 5 years this summer and that line is the unfortunate reminder. :( I better sign off here. Later.
Patti

I haven't heard "I'll Tag Along", but I read the lyrics and it sounded depressing. I thought Wild Strawberries sounded more uplifting. I believe God's people will finally win, cuz the bible says so. So, I'd say, nope, that's not true about never really winning, sweetie pie... Mmmmmm, strawberry pie.
;)
How about "Now and Then". I mean, haven't we all been in relationships where we should just let go but don't?
Sheryl

I'll Tag Along is a favorite of mine. To my mind, it's a positive song, perhaps I haven't been paying attention to lyrics, I don't know. O.K., I just went back and re-read the lyrics. I love this song because to me he's saying I'll share with you anything I have in this relationship. It seems like a second relationship and he's learned from the first. We have things we can do without, and if you have problems, turn to me and I'll tag along (I'll be there to help.) It seems very sweet and positive.

The songs that touch me? "Song for a Winter's Night" and "That Same Old Obsession". I think it has as much to do with the emotional place you were in when you heard them as the song itself. These two were always sad and comforting to me at the same time, if that makes sense.

I can remember hearing The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald when I was about 6 or 7 years old and it almost brought me to tears. I didn't actually cry but I remember grieving ( if that's possible) for a long time. That song has always had an effect on me. After 2 kids and a wife (age 33) I took my family up to Whitefish Pt. to see the bell. Overlooking Lake Superior and watching the waves crash while listening to Lightfoot's haunting balllad is almost a religious experience.
Does anyone know anything about the movie?????

Oddly, Drink Yer Glasses Empty, puts a lump in my throat.
I guess because my dad and father-in-law were both in WWII in the RCAF. Both lucky to get back in one piece. I see pics of my dad as a young boy, all of 19 years old, climbing into his big 4-engine Halifax Bomber. I see my father-in-law climbing into his Spitfire ... and I wonder ...would I have had the courage to do what they did voluntarily?
Today they are both still here -- one 81 and the other 87 -- both mere shadows of the men that I knew as vigorous and strong ... that is their bodies, but there souls and spirits are still 20 years old despite the lines that time has etched on their faces.
Every day that goes by I say thanks to them and the 1.1 million Canadians who served in WWII. We were a country of only 11 million people at the time -- over 10% of the population served. We lost more people per capita to WWII than any other country excepy Russia.

Good night all.

I was dancin'
with my darlin'
to the Tennessee waltz,
when an old friend
I happened to meet.
I introduced him
to my loved one;
and while they were dancin',
my friend stole my sweetheart from me.
[Chorus]
I remember the night
and the Tennessee waltz.
Now I know just how much I have lost.
Yes, I lost my
little darlin'
the night they were playin'
the beautiful Tennessee Waltz.
I know there are a couple more verses, but I'm not sure exactly how they go...this is the version played by a guy, and you can change the "him" to "her" for whomever is singing it...such as when Patti Paige sang it...back in the day :D

Debra,I saw Patti Page on PBS earlier this year on one of those 1950's music specials. She sang that song as if it were still the early 1950's!
It was extremely moving, not just for the lyrics but in seeing the folks in the audience that are my Mother's age & up. They looked so happy to see her up there, like they were in a time machine or something. :) :( (at the same time.)
Even more touching that night was another singer from that time Gogi Grant (not her real name). She had a huge hit in 1956 with,"The Wayward Wind".
Pat Boone introduced her and out strolled this now 80 year old woman and she sang it and sounded almost exactly like the record I 1st heard all the way back in 1972 at age 4! I got "misty" in my eyes. ...and I'm not even of that era.

Gotta look for that PBS thing.
I figure I've sung that song across the yrs almost as often as dear Ms Page. Loved it each time. And I could do a mean waltz when I was 10.
Maybe the two finest hit-record-type waltzes from the 50s are The Tennessee Waltz and Waltz Across Texas. Patti Page & Ernest Tubb. Oh, my!
I don't think Strauss was still writing then.

I find Home from the Forest rather sad. Also, The Lost Children, especially the lines: "Their laughter filled the countryside but they'll not laugh again" and "And the young boys were the middle name for guns to pray upon". (Although I always thought that line was "And the young boys were the middle men for the guns to play upon", but I think the meaning is the same). Especially hard to listen to in times of war, when so many young people are not coming home.
