In my opinion the evocative, fine, imagary of GL lyrics are one of the reasons his songs are the best.

'Listen to the pictures flow
Across the room into your mind they go'.

'How long said she can a moment like this belong to someone'.

'When the green dark forest was to silent to be real'.

Which is his greatest or most profound lyric?
Which is your personal favourite?
Which is the one that will be remembered more than others?

Hi Frank V. -

excellent thread ... Gord has written an amazing number of deeply poetic lyrics and has displayed a unique craft in creating genuine poetry on all aspects of life, but I am (still) somewhat of a romantic so I go for the lines he wrote on love and passion like

"The last time I walked with her
her laughter was the steeple bells
that ring to greet the morning sun
a voice that called to everyone
to love the ground we walked upon...
those were the good days"

from one of my faborite GL tunes.

I mean, everybody whoīs ever revisted a place he (or she) has walked hand in hand with that someone special lost a long time ago (like I did this Saturday) will feel that song running through his/her veins eventually.

Some of my favorites:

"See the soldier with his gun
who must be dead to be admired." - Don Quixote

"Now will you try and tell us, you been too long at school
That knowledge is not needed, that power does not rule
That war is not the answer, that young men should not die
Sit down young stranger, I wait for your reply" - Sit Down Young Stranger

"Forgiving is to lovers as trusting is to fools" - Too Much To Lose

Chriistian,

Bravo! I am of the opinion that no more powerful a love song exists than 'The Last Time I Saw Her.' The first time I heard it I was blown away, and I am moved each time I hear it again.

Great reply Christian.
Amazing classical overtones on that song.
Almost as good as a great German composer.

Its the richness, clarity and depth of his lyrics that strike me.
The style is also different.
To a non Canadian like myself it seems exotic
Not in the hot sense if you know what i mean.
The romantic side is realistic and reflective.Natural and sincere.

I Just cant get enough of it...

This is as hard as choosing a favorite Lightfoot song. But here are some of the lines that never fail to make my spine tingle. Oh, and they tend to be the ones that paint a big picture with relatively few words - so here goes:

"When the autumn wind goes singing through the trestle we would climb
Like brave mountaineers" (Brave Mountaineers).

"When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck saying
Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya
At seven PM a main hatchway caved in, he said
Fellas, it's been good to know ya" (The Wreck).

"But the sands run out within her heart
A tiny spark glows red
It smoulders through the evening
There's laughter overhead" (Yarmouth Castle).

"Deck The Halls was the song they played
In the flat next door where they shout all day
She tips her gin bottle back till it's gone
The child is strong" (Circle Of Steel).

"Fortune will not find you in your mansion or your truck
Brothers will desert you when you're down and shit out of luck" (Seven Island Suite).

"And if you meet him you must be
The victim of his minstrelsy" (Minstrel Of The Dawn).

"some people join the party, and others say goodnight"

Hi Frank v,

What a great topic idea!
(and some new ideas for my Spotlight on Lyrics! (http://www.corfid.com/gl/spotlight.shtml) section).

Let's go, here are some of my favorite lyrics (~259 others to follow soon http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif)

Did She Mention My Name, The Way I Feel:
But as she walks, she waits for him
the pavement is a shoulder for her tears
But in her heart she knows there is no way
She can hope to change him

Carefree Highway, Sundown:
Turnin' back the pages to the times I love best
I wonder if she'll ever do the same
Now the thing that I call livin' is just bein' satisfied
With knowin' I got no one left to blame

If Children Had Wings, Endless Wire:
With a smile on my face and a tear in my eye
Everything will be fine by and by

Christian Island, Don Quixote:
I'm sailing down the summer wind
I got whiskers on my chin
And I like the mood I'm in
As I while away the time of day
In the lee of Christian Island

Fine As Fine Can Be, Cold On The Shoulder:
Like the rain is for the crops
You're like food for my thoughts
You're like true is for knowin' what's not
You're like leaves are for trees
You're like bees are for buzzin'
You're as fine as fine can be

Christian,

You were not by any chance named after the song Christian Island, were you?

potter

'I knew a man from Windsor
Who went to Detroit every night
And stateside of the tunnel
Customs agents gave him flight
He threw his stash in the river
And his bedroll on the ground
And when they finally got there
A sleeping man was all that they found

He just let it ride
Ride let it ride
Leavin' on the evenin' tide
Just let it ride'

Let It Ride from East of Midnight

No, I was not named after "Christian Island", as I had already been around for 11 years or so by the time Gord cut the record.

I traveled Canada extensively in 1989, though, to Gordonīs tunes blasting off the rented-car stereo, and had a chance of visiting the roots of Gordonīs creative roots - including the beautiful lakes of Ontario and Orillia (which proudly displays a huge wooden "Hometown of Gordon Lightfoot" billboard).

Thanks Potter - please excuse my sloppy typing which is usually done in a candle-lit attic way after midnight (with GL playing on a small portable stereo).
And thanks Frank V - even though Iīm more into Canadian or American balladeers than German classic composers.

A heavy rain has just started pounding on my roof here, so...
"I wish you good spaces
in the far-away places you go
If it rains or it snows
May you be safe and warm
and never grow old.."

Itīs great to be in touch with all of you.

Cheers,
Christian

I have a few more masterful lyrics to throw out there. With so many wonderful lyrics, this thread could go on forever!
From Tattoo:
Time has been wasting away, you know time doesn't
Wait for nobody to find what they're after
It just keeps on rolling on down the deep canyons
And through the green meadows into the broad ocean, good night
From 10 Degrees and Getting Colder:
He was standing by the highway
With a sign that just said Mother

Here is yet another lyric which I enjoy:

'I'm sailing down the summer day
Where the fish and seagulls play
I put my troubles all away
And when the gales comes up I'll fill my cup
With the whiskey of the Highlands
She's a good old ship and she'll make the trip
From the lee of Christian Island'

and so it goes.............
it's an endless list of life and feelings and I can't for the life of me choose a lyric, a phrase or thought that would be my favourite! It is such an emotional, heartfelt grab on my very soul each and every time I hear a Lightfoot song that I am too weak to even verbalize how I feel.
Mostly I want to weep at the beauty of it all. It's been like that for almost 3 decades and I hope I never get over it. Bless you Gordon Lightfoot.

You know, one of the interesting things about this song is that originally - back in the late 70s when he first released it - Gord would occasionally say in concert that this song was about US immigration policy. He never says that today; he just says that it was his mother's favorite song. But you really hit on the key lines in it.

Silver Heels...you said it best. Hearing and feeling the voice, overlays, inspiration, lyrics and heart, at one of
Gordons concerts, causes one to hold on to
every second wishing you could remain there
for eternity. I find myself wondering how many in attendance share the same thought
and feelings.

I love all of Gordo's lyrics but I especially get a chuckle out of "I wish that I could love them one by one" from
"All The Lovely Ladies"

I can't remember ever leaving Massey Hall right after a Lightfoot show. I always am planted in my seat by some unseen force and I literally have no power to get up. I don't want to leave. The lights are on and the set is dismantled, the usher has come by and given me the "time to leave" look a couple of times but I can't focus on getting up and leaving. My head is so full of "Lightfoot" that I can't stand the idea that it's over for another 12 months or 18 months - I sense a slight panic start and I feel my husband tap me on the shoulder, saying, "come on they want us to leave." I get up reluctantly, looking back at the stage several times. I hesitate in the lobby and slowly leave throught the huge doors and out into the night. I walk to the marquee and look at Gord's name there and sigh. It takes me until I am almost home to realize that it is over and I have once again heard the finest singer/songwriter/poet that Canada (and probably any other country for that matter) has ever had. I smile and give thanks for the beauty of it all and wish Gord a silent prayer of safety so we can do it all again the next time.

Let us all keep him in our prayers as, for sure, it is not too late.

I love the flow of "Dreamland" and the lyrics
that jumps out at me are:

"you make me do what you want me to do then you ran the rules on me"

"you could rap me around your finger till it
caused my heart to break"

I think we've all experienced the above at one time or another. His lyrics take us from the valleys to the peaks and it's such a nice journey.

There are so many lyrics to list its hard to narrow it down, but here goes.

"Picking up the peices of my dream shatter'd sleep, I wonder how the old folks are tonight."

"The fire is dying, now the lamp is growing dim. the shades of night are lifting."

"There were no illusions on the summer side of life."

Well those are just a couple lyrics that come to mind, although there are so many more. Great topic Frank.

Not to even start on lines because there are too many perfect ones, but, Florian - Second Cup of Coffee is just so well written!
"I'm on my second cup of coffee and I still can't face the dawn
The radio is playing a soft country song
And if I don't stop these trembling hands from reaching for the phone
I'll be reaching for the bottle, Lord, before this day is done."

Been there.

Don Quixote is such an excellent piece of work. Probably my favorite of the whole bunch - but right in the middle of an incredible string...

Yes Florian and Fezo..."2nd cup of coffee" is great and what about "out on the road like a low down joe and the bar where we are is so cool I'd like like to stay" from "Somewhere USA".

How about: "Where the road runs down by the butternut grove to ole Bill Skinners Stream do tell at the noonday bell it's time for a summertime dream"

also

"Birds in all creation will be twitterin' in the trees and down below is a pond I know you can swim in it if you please"

"If you'll come around when the mill shuts down you can see what chivalry means lets steal away in the noonday sun it's time for a Summertime Dream"

Yes, indeed. Stay safe Gord and please come back to the UK soon. I'm suffering terrible withdrawal back here!

You guys hit it dead on with "Second Cup of coffee". That one consice line conjurs up so many images, and brings back alot of memories for many of us, I'm sure!

Some other lines that really strike a chord include:

'The one man band philosophical man
Didn't lie when he said to us
I seen the high rollers come and go
It's the holy rollers I trust'

'From Dusk until dawn,
They searched all day long
But there's too many clues in this room'

There's just so many!!!

Hey - speaking of Gordon the Poet, I'm sure alot of you are familiar with the verses that are printed on the "Summertime Dream" album. Has anyone ever heard Gord put these great words to music? I wonder if he has any other works of poetry, not set to music, just waiting to be uncovered by his loyal disciples.

I really love how you have all posted some of his best lyrics, but just this evening my wife and I were driving along singing Triangle together and laughing about the clever poetry of the song. It certainly is fun and the words just seem to fall together.

rob

When she made her last tumble,
The sea bottom rumbled,
There was no confusion or blame.
The Captain said, "Men we must answer again,
To the sea,
So yea shall not complain."
And as they lay sleeping down there in the deep,
With their faces turned up to the stars,
A tunafish turned to a mermaid and said,
"There goes another sand bar".

bobo,
Speaking of poetry, apart from lyrics, if you have the Back Here on Earth Album, there is a poem on the back of the album, connected somewhat to the song Cold Hands from New York. (In my mind anyway they are related.) Now Cold Hands... is a great song. The lyrics and music are so melded and the story so tragic... It's in the same vein as Cirlce of Steel, but anyway the poem on the back of the album is something else. I still remember when I bought the album way back then and sat down to listen and then read the poem and thinking, man he is a genius. Just another Gordon moment to share!

Me too. I think it is one of the most beautiful and brilliant songs ever written.

My favorite lines (in addition to the ones you quoted) are:

"Now will you try and tell us, you been too long at school
That knowledge is not needed, that power does not rule
That war is not the answer, that young men should not die"

and

"The answer is not easy for souls are not reborn"

- Sit Down Young Stranger, c1970 by Gordon Lightfoot

I "discovered" the song on the album, probably about 10 years after it was recorded. It was instantly and always a favorite song after that. In 1996 or 1997, Lightfoot brought the song back into his act and I first heard it live in May of 1998, and again in July (both times by request). He hasn't done it at all since 1998, much to my chagrin. Time to get those requests in! What an incredible song to experience live.

Here are a couple that came to my mind:

"Down in the dark of a burnt out soul, there's a few good second hand dreams" (Endless Wire)

"When I'm drinking to you I get down in my shoes in a waltz with the blues" (Sometimes I Don't Mind)

"The songs of the wars are as old as the hills. They cling like the rust on the cold steel that kills" (Patriot's Dream)

Great topic -

Among the lines that GL will be most remembered for are these:

"But stories always end,
and if you read between the lines,
you'd know that I'm just trying to understand
the feelings that you lack,
I never thought I could feel this way and I've got to say
that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
but the feelings' gone
and I just can't get it back.

My favorite?

"At times I just don't know
how you could be anything but beautiful.
I think that I was made for you
And you were made for me. . . .

Laughing eyes and smiling face;
It seems so lucky just to have the right
of telling you with all my might
'You're beautiful tonight.'"

(Beautiful)

Or these:

"There's peace in the garden
there's peace in the air,
peace in the sound of the river.
There's peace in the meadow,
the sun shines like gold,
and if you were with me
there'd be peace in my soul."

My favourite line in IYCRMM .... "I walk away like a movie star who gets burned in a three way script"
i actually did not care that much for that song until recently, after the Songbook came out. i never bothered to listen to it much before then because i wasn't really compelled to, but after songbook came out i rediscovered it, good song.

Although I can't imagine anyone else covering "Beautiful," I would like to hear someone try. A truly great song permits various interpretations.

For example, Gord's cover of "Me and Bobby McGee" is similar to but better than the Kris Kristopherson (spelling?) original and utterly different from Janice Joplin's huge hit.

Also, last summer's disco version of IYCRMM, which I found difficult to listen to, nevertheless made the song accessible to my teenage daughter, who now likes to listen to Gord's original version.

If "Beautiful" were performed by someone like Jewel, Boyz2Men or SavageGarden, it might be interesting. It could never replace or equal Gord, but it would open up his music to a new generation.

Oh how I wish your heart could see
How mine just aches and breaks all day.

I've watched the country growin' like a fair and mighty thing. . .

And the people rise in anger
And the streets begin to fill
And there's gunfire from the rooftops
And the blood begins to spill!

I'm not sayin' that I'll do
The things you want me to
I'm not sayin' I'll be true
But I'll try!

The big drive wheels are poundin' all along the ground
Gonna get on board and I'll be homeward bound!

Guess we all got problems of our own to bear
But still we share tomorrow
Could get better
Than today

Go my way, it's the only way to go
If things aren't working out, you'll be the first to know
Come on along and together wee'll go
Please love me
And say that you'll be mine!!!

I guess it just goess on and on.

As much as I like Gord's version of Bobby Magee, I love the feelings that Kris puts into it - especially when he I've seen him perform it in concert. Knowing his trials and tribulations puts pictures in my mind and Kris is the vision I see. His voice is definately not on par with Gord's but I feel the song when I hear Kris do it. He never knew Janis Joplin had recorded it until after her death - they had been "dating" prior to that and he has said he loves her version.

Stacy -

My May 11 posting listed that lyric as one of Gord's greatest, so we are on the same wavelength on this one. I have the advantage of preserving the gender as written.

I associate this lyric with a 5-month solo backpack trip I took in Europe after college. Sort of the equivalent of an Australian walkabout. (Didn't get as far as Vienna on that one, tho I've been there since.) The lyrics of many of Gord's songs were my traveling companions during those days. "Sometimes it did get lonely but it taught me how to cry ... " "Is the ice still in the river? Are the old folks still the same? And by the way ..."

The song also evokes memories of a few wonderful and special people who were almost (but not quite) the right persons for me to have married. Unfortunately, a few of their (and my) "same old obsessions" kept us apart.

For the record, I also had one of those "Betty Called Me In" relationships, but I have different memories of that one.

No regrets. There was too much to lose for me to stay around. But since then I've found someone to whom I can say "I was made for you as you were made for me."

As I hope you have.

I had to throw that in because there was a bobby mcgee kick going there. anyway, a personal favourite (for what i am assuming is an obvious reason) - from High and Dry - "if it wasn't for long john silver all of us pirate's would have been martyrs"

CRT Contains more profound lines than any other song I know.

"Time has no beginnings and history has no bounds".

One of how many...?

Love lost pain...

"I know I should hold no fear to Love again,
because "Love" anytime at all,
Is worth the price you pay to fall."

Fred Neal (Decembers Dream).

Frankv - the CRT is a very profound song for Canadians when you really know the history of Canada being settled by the English and French, the injustices to the native peoples, the movement west and the introduction of our own government which brought the rail line from sea to sea into fruition. My daughter studied it this year in Gr. 7 and I always had CRT running through my head as I helped her understand her lessons. The way Lightfoot captured every detail of the above mentioned things about Canada back in the 1860-1870 time period makes me believe that CRT should be printed in every Canadian history text book across this country.
Oh the song of the future has been sung....

Fezo,
Great your back.
you're my 'music taste' double!

Char,
Its a complete 7 min History song.
It could be a three part Novel or Movie in anybodys imagination!
If thats not enough, there are three different versions of it(TWIF SC GG)
Each one has its own feel.
The music is as powerful as the lyrics. That isn't always the case with narrative songs.

zzzz Its Sunday morning Folks.
(Well it is here anyway...)

Another lazy mornin'
No need to get bothered
I'll think about Monday
when Monday comes.

I can't say that one line is better than another because there are so many great ones, but one of mine that I did not see was:

"Where are the boys in their coats of blue Who flew when their eyes were blind"

My brother was a pilot in the Air Force and I always think of him when I here this line.

I've just got back from Spain folks.

"Spanish Moss
keeps on followin' my thoughts around."

The family insisted it should be a Gord free holiday.
No music. No chat. No Net!

They couldn't stop me thinking about him though......

Who needs sun and palm trees...

"Bless you all and keep you with the faith to let it pass"

"It's a wicked wind and it chills me to the bone"

"You can't jump a jet plane like you can a frate train"

"1 day win I gru older, I found I could not hold her"

"Does anyone know where the love of God goe$ when the waves turn the minutes to hours"

So many favorites,,...one on the lighter side I always get a smile from ,,,..."Let it now be known that throughout all of these years,,..I have been wearing polka dot underwear." and another "Light" favorite that always paints a vision that could not be better captured by Kodak,,.."and tender young snails,,as brown as the seaweed with old rusty nails.."...to even incorporate the word "snails" into a song, and in the next breath paint such a vivid vision,,,,,thats Gordon Lightfoot, our Painter, what else can be said..... Iron,,,...smiling

It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words.

For me Gordon,s words paint a stunning picture.

A stand out lyric, for me, is:

When the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the sun. Long before the white man and long before the wheel, when the green dark forest was too silent to be real

If I spent the rest of my life in an atelier with palette and canvas, I could not paint a clearer picture than those 31 words.

Here is a Buffett line that makes me smile.
I made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast. Never meant to last, Never meant to last.
