View Full Version : New twist on favorite Gord song
For most of us, it's been extremely hard to choose a favorite Gord tune. But how 'bout if we go a step further and select one that leaves us speechless everytime we hear it. For example, I absolutely love "Summerside of Life". To me, that song lacks nothing! The first time I heard it, It wasn't the words nor the music that got me. It was the way Gord's voice floated up and down and all around me. The second time it was the music and lastly the lyrics. This song I cannot sing along with. I just listen, close my eyes and sway with the changes in his voice. What about ya'll? What song(s) leaves you breathless/speechless?

I have a few:
The Last Time I saw Her
Softly
The Pony Man
Summer Side of Life
Fine as Fine Can Be
A Lesson In Love
I'll Prove My Love to You
On Susan's Floor
there are others and they take my breath away every time.

Mine is "Hey You".
Stay loose, eh?
LAMS
------------------
"Love and maple syrup
go together like the
sticky winds of winter
when they meet....
If you go into the forest
Gaze up through the trees
The sky is white.
You can understand
What makes the forest
Greet the man
Like a mother's only
child ..."

There are so many great Gord songs that it truly is hard (impossible?) to pick one. My favorite for sentimental reasons is The Last Time I Saw Her, the first Gord song that I ever heard. But one song that I still find stunning every time that I hear it is Canadian Railroad Trilogy. And let me only tell you that I have heard this song many, MANY times (and often very LOUD)!!
I find such great poetry and power in Gord's performance that the song commands my attention.
"On the mountaintops we stand
All the world at our command
Wehave opened up the soil
With our teardrops. . . and our toil!"
Wow, I thrill just to typing those lyrics.

I know what you mean, Jay. Once I committed myself in selecting "Summer Side of Life" as my example, I then thought about how hearing "Seven Island Suite" has the same effect over me, however, I will sing along with it.
And I can't believe my eyes . . . Char did not include "Beautiful" in her list!

For me it is 'Christian Island'. I just have to close my eyes and listen. It brings me such beautiful images. Then how about'Its Worth Believin', 'Song for a Winter's Night','Triangle' or 'Gypsy', 'Did She mention My Name' 'Walls' ... this is silly - they are all my favourites.

When I am up in Christian Island territory I close my eyes and see Gord out there- the wind blowing through his hair and the sun shining on his tanned shoulders and upper arms. The area is totally beautiful and peaceful. It's no wonder a song came out of Gord's sailing experiences to the lee of Christian Island.

Hi Jay K (not to be confused with registered Jay),
Oh yes, I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say, we do indeed, like the songs you mentioned. Gord has SO MANY great songs its difficult to narrow down those we consider favorites. I guarantee that when someone reads your post and sees what's on your list, in their minds they're saying: "Oh, yeah. I forgot about that one! I know I did when I saw "Now and Then". From another post I saw "Triangle" and like Silver Heels, thought . . . this is silly- they're all favorites!

For me it's "Don Quixote"...very poetic, visual, and wonderful beat/intrumentation.
Or "Brave Mountaineers" for the same reasons.
Or "Mintrel of the Dawn" for the same reasons.
Or "Did She Mention my Name" FOR THE SAME REASONS!

Good topic. I have to agree with Jay. Though CANADIAN RAILROAD TRILOGY is not my favorite Gordon tune, it is the one that commands the most admiration both for it's incredible story-telling success and perfectly mastered instrumental "railroad" which the listener rides on from start to finish. (Of interest: my husband is an architect; he says that this song is architecturally perfect. I can't agree more!)

How about On the high seas?
Any one going to the Sun ON Sept.! to see GORD? Beside me that is.

Sandyo,
Which version of "Song For A Winter's Night"
do you like best? I prefer the one on "Gord's
Gold" best. It takes my breath away and
makes me abuse the rewind button!

Well, got to work today after I left here, only to find that 99% of the work had been done! I worked a solitary hour! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif ..but that's okay,I've missed you guys, despite the very few minutes I've been able to be on in the past week or so! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif
Okay, nice fresh perspective on the "favorites" question,so let's see.......
End Of All Time
My Love For You
Rainbow Trout
The Pony Man
Beautiful
A Message To The Wind
The Way I Feel (both.)
Wherefore & Why
Saturday Clothes
You'll Still Be Needing Me (la-la-la-la..la-la!) http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif
Your Love's Return
Nous Vivons Ensemble
Long River
If You Could Read My Mind
Cotton Jenny
Summer Side Of Life
