I don't know how it sounds like Led zeppelin, but I agree with you about Cabaret. I much prefer the faster section of it towards the end (...from the coast of california)

I don't believe in miracles if it's all the same by you
Your wishes would come true if I had my say
Whether it's right or wrong the words of every song
Remind us of a love we knew where love should not go wrong
In yesterday
Hang on ye drifters now you got so much to go and gamble on
Watch out for the shifting sand where ever you may ramble

Even now as I look back and see all that's come to pass
I can't remember how it was I got here
Look around this place there's a smile on every face
We're somewhere in the afterglow out there among the stars
Out there among the bars

Hang on ye drifters now you got places to go and people to meet
Watch out for the shifting tide where ever you may travel.

I know I should not complain because life's been good to me
It feels real good to be stranded on my own
Be that as it may be we are what we are
I'll find you in the afterglow out there among the stars
Of yesteryear

Hang on ye drifters now you got so much to go and gamble on
Watch out for the shifting sand where ever you may ramble

All you drifters now you got places to go and people to meet
Watch out for the shifting tide where ever you may travel.

...If I had my way...I'd change the first line to "I do believe in miracles". I really like the song but find myself changing the lyric when I sing along to reflect a more positive emotion...just one man's opinion.

I would re-do Talking In Your Sleep. It's just "way" to country,as is "You Are What I Am". I'd certainly scale down,"Anything For Love" to just piano, bass, guitar, easy drumming and maybe a nice deep chello. Now that I've said 'chello' I'll say, catch ya on the flipside of Sundown! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif

I think the slow beginning in "Cabarat" works well with the song because it builds you up to the fast part. Without it, I don't think the fast part would have quite as much impact.

Speaking of Salute. I forgot to add that I thought the picture on back, just like on Waiting, would have made a better cover. I also went back and relistened to the LP since I got it out to re-check the cover. I find I like Whispers Of The North and Gotta Get Away more than I did before. Maybe because I was in a more relaxed atmosphere than the first time. I also tried Someone To Believe In but while I think the lyrics are great,I still cannot get into the musical side of it. I guess I just like Gord when he keeps it simple. Lastly,I forgot to mention Sunday Concert. I'll just say it's an okay live shot but the lighting makes his shirt look pink and that color does not agree with him. As for greatest hits packages, except Songbook, they're not much but his picture is on the front of them. Later! In "East Of Midnight" after the lyrics "It takes a bit of my heart" and "Now thats a pretty good start", I would get read of that trumpet sound. It makes it sound too 80sh to me.

Gord has actually done an acoustic version of East Of Midnight, and a few years back used to play it in concerts quite often. I never was very fond of the song, but the acoustic version is quite nice.

It's folk music DMD3,most folk acts of the 60's used clapping for rhythm instead of drums. Just listen to Trini Lopez's,"If I Had A Hammer",for the best example. I find that to sound a lot more fun than just standard drumming. Those wanting to can clap along with the song. It gives a song a more human feeling too. Actually, the clapping sounded a bit fake for some reason, I guess because they'd start clapping and then stop real suddenly.
I didn't know it was live, I thought they put it their for sound effects.(At least there wasn't cheering and whistling)

I think the clapping on the LP is edited for spacial content. Meaning that maybe the audience is clapping & cheering so much it would be too long to sit through. The show was recorded in Canada,so you can imagine how much they were doing so. I think they did the same thing on Cheap Trick's Budokan LP. There's no more fake applause though than on Elton John's,"Bennie & The Jets." For years,I thought that was such a cool live track, only to find out it was all put together in the studio. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif It's been me,later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif

These are live recordings from his Sunday Concert album, recorded in 1969 (I think) at Massey Hall in Toronto. Believe me, it's not canned clapping. They are real people clapping at a real performance. I bet, had you been there, you would have been clapping, too.

I don't think there's anything wrong with 'As Fine As Fine Can Be' but I'd like to hear it with just Gord singing on stage and nothing else. Thats the way I hum it in my head. But with just a voice and no music, it may not be appropriate for a CD.

I wish the Gords Gold version of Bitter Green had been played on the same note as the original. But he played it a note lower and it doesn't sound so good then. If it weren't for this, this version would've been superior to the others.

Sometimes I wish Sundown had a little something else or more to it. I really like the song, and it's definitely catchy, but I don't know, maybe it needed more story, maybe less repetition or maybe a middle eight. I don't think I've heard a single Gord song with a middle eight, but that is typical of folk songs. It's either verse/chorus or a verse ending in a chorus. If anyone is not familiar with a middle-eight, it's that part of a song about half way through and about eight bars long that sounds different from the rest of the song. A good example is, "I Want To Hold Your Hand". The middle eight is, "and when I touch you I feel happy inside, it's such a feeling that my love, I can't hide, I can't hide". Gord has definitely done some interesting things in his songs, like Seven Island Suite and Canadian Railroad Trilogy, but he certainly doesn't write your standard pop song. Neither does The Flaming Lips as far as I can tell. They don't regularly incorporate middle eights into their songs.

Thanks for clarifying, Johnfowles! The Flaming Lips (space) rock!! I call their kind of music, "Future Folk", because Wayne Coyne is undeniably obsessed with all things futuristic and their music, at its core, is structurally similar to folk music. If you strip away all the effects and moog synths and such, you've got great little folk songs. But anyway, I digress, this is a Gord site! Rainbow Trout rocks!!!

I agree with you Big Blue! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif Rainbow Trout is a simple and wonderful song. We have a few guys on here that say they skip it when they play their copy of Cold On The Shoulder! I think it would be a great sing-a-long song for children in Kindergarten because it does have an air of "cuteness" and "storybook" about it. On one of my homemade tapes I have it right before,"If Children Had Wings". It's actually tape #1 and if you want to read all the tapes I've recorded,go to "Borderstone Tapes (Tape 1)" thread. Well I think some really good sounds of screaming and water crashing would make a great intro to the Wreck of the Fitzg. Just kidding.
Every time I hear the sound of a Loon, I cant remember which song follows...i.e Whispers of the North or Canary Yellow Canoe. SO oft times I have the volume up too high and when gord shouts "IN MY CANARY YELLOW CANOE" i ALMOST GET IN A CAR WRECK TRYING TO TURN THE VOLUME DOWN thinking its the whisper song. They should have a warning on that some dont ya think?

All I'm After: I think it could've done without the "I think I've got it maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaade" part.

Ring Them Bells and Bells Of The Evening would've sounded cool with the adding of a deep gong of church bells in them. (They're good songs, but when I hear the word "bells" in the title, I always expect to hear bells throughout the song, like Hell's Bells by ACDC.
