"Gather not your gold on earth
Your kingdom is in heaven"
This part of the song seems to be a paraphrase of a Bible verse...unfortunately I don't know the chapter and verse! I think it goes along with or is a paraphrase of the verse that speaks about storing your treasures in heaven were they will not be stolen or rot. Guess I should have paid more attention in Sunday School!
Afterthought...It's interesting that GL changes it to "It will not pass inspection" later. Hmmm, wonder why?

Apology has long been my absolute Sunday Concert favo(u)rite track and must be on my planned Songbook Disc 5. So well done Gwen for not only picking it out but also for querying the most poignant lines
Oma surely the line includes "inspection" to rhyme with "direction"???

The use of the word "inspection" is a powerful paraphrase. In other words if one stores up their treasures on earth in the end they will not enter the heavenly gates.

Found the verses I was thinking of.
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (Matthew 6:19-21)
It seems to me that GL uses Biblical paraphrases and references from time to time in his songs. Didn't he get his musical start singing in church?

Yes. I have also heard him speak of the Savior in concert. Pretty cool.

Home, school AND church - the boy sang himself to sleep practically from infancy. From a 1996 interview: "For 14 years Lightfoot has sung at the midnight Christmas service of his local church. Sometimes he does the early service as well. "'I got most of my training singing in the church choir,'" he says. "'I figure I owe them.'" Between the church choir and the Kiwanis Music Festival - see the article on this site at www.corfid.com/gl/press/press53.htm (http://www.corfid.com/gl/press/press53.htm) -
plus his parents' support he had one terrific foundation on which to build a career.

Up until last year when he became sick, he also sang at his church at Christmas.
