Hello - I live in Phoenix, AZ and just built a new house off the Carefree Highway. I remember Gordon Lightfoots song that I always loved by the same name. I have heard tales about the fact he wrote that song after the highway. Is it true? What is the story? I also heard that he never returned to Arizona/Carefree highway after he wrote that song. The story is true that he wrote the song for that road. Also, he tells of having almost left the lyrics in the glovebox of his rental car. At some point I thought I'd seen of photo of Rick Haynes by that sign...but it's been so long that I may have that fact wrong.

the book that accompanies the "SONGBOOK" boxset is filled with lots of great pictures, one of which is a photo of Gord & tour mgr. Wally Bivens standing under the CAREFREE HWY RIGHT LANE road sign. the pic was taken by Rick Haynes in Arizona, 1978.
