Did several searches and have been curious for years about the ending to this protest song Sit Down Young Stranger.
Does anyone know Who, Mr. Lightfoot is refering to with the lyric:
John loves mary
Does anyone love me
Also, I assume it is about feeling like an outsider? Any different interpretations?
Thanks for the help http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

Read the lyrics from the perspective of a draft dodger back in the Vietnam era. It will make more sense.
I don't think he was being specific about John and Mary. John and Mary are two of the most common names known to man. He was just saying that everyone has someone else to love. Why doesn't he?

Wasn't "John" the name of the man The Virgin Mary was with when Jesus was born in the manger? I think that's what Gord means, but i could be wrong. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

But I think Jesus had a half brother named John.

yeah, then there was John the Baptist who baptized him...lots of guys named John in the Bible. Just none who were Mary's husband.

War is not the answer... the answer's in the forest carved upon a tree. I think he just use two generic names to convey the idea that love is the answer, not war.
