View Full Version : Friday's Chat Room
gwen sue snyder

Yahoo chat rooms have apparently succumbed to the vagaries of that organisation's
incompetence (is the best word I can think of)
the Tuesday evening Chat sessions there have been deactivated.
In general the alternative the original rik's room works fine, although from time to time some chatters are having a problem getting in most recently "guitarman" Peter
see one hint below. I am going to post this on both the Newsgroup
alt.music.lightfoot accessible via the archived Google Groups site at:-http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&group=alt.music.lightfoot
or via any newsreader such as Outlook Express
and on Florian's (corfid) Discussion Forum at http://www.corfid.com/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi
we are getting a very satisfactory attendance in Rik's Chat Room every
Friday evening at 9 pm EST last Friday there were a total of 9 including a pair of welcome "newcomers" "Dan from NY" and "mieman from Iowa". Tonight Ron from Melbourne is hibernating so he wont bother anyone who attends for once
As previously recommended in my Newsgroup postings by far the best means to
participate is to firstly download install and configure the Internet Relay Chat
"client" mIRC
full illustrated instructions and details are shown on my web site at http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/chatroom/settingupmIRC.htm
or my "shorturl" link http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
the non-mIRC direct entry URL is http://chat.cjb.net/gordonlightfootchat
or the "shorturl" link at http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
Please note that riks room requires the (automatic) downloading of a Java
applet so if you do not
immediately see a largish gray/grey rectangle loading
ensure that your "Java scripting" has not somehow been set to "disable"
Internet Explorer-tools-internet options-security-custom level
then scroll down to the "scripting" options part and under java scripting
select "enable"
If you are perchance using Netscape tough! you will have to ask Ed Mullen
any other questions please e-mail me
By The Way using the direct method entails entering a nickname
which you might find has already been registered by another punter
configuring mIRC gives you the option I believe of picking any nick you
desire
once in the room either way you can simply change your nick by typing /nick
followed by whatever name you want
example type as follows /nick newname
Cheers

What about a voice chat? If you have a microphone, you can go to either one of two sites: www.Audio-Tips.com (http://www.Audio-Tips.com)
or www.For-The-People.com (http://www.For-The-People.com)
and register to chat. Let me know if this sounds like a good idea. I'm registered at both places, so whichever one looks best, let me know.
Thanks a lot.

Last Friday's chat was interesting as always and we welcomed back "tilt" from somewhere in NY
So tonight as every Friday evening at 9pm EST come in to http://chat.cjb.net/gordonlightfootchat or click on my shorturl: http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com (I have just checked and both link to
the familiar old room
whereas the chatroom link on Rik's web site page now brings up a link to his proposed new Bravenet chat room only at the moment
Even better is to get mIRC full details from my site page http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
Which reminds me again that Erica promised a concise write up on the benefits of using mIRC "by thanksgiving" you said E which duly pased with nothing from Florida to elucidate my efforts to encourage use of mIRC
But in particular mIRC facilitates the copying and pasting of text plus recall of your previous typed entries through the simple use of the up and down arrows.
Some time ago it was suggested that each session should have a topic for discussion
tonight I will propose that each of the "regulars" takes a turn at posting each weeks reminder and suggesting a topic for that evening's session
TO start the ball rolling tonight I suggest we follow up on the very successful
Newsgroup thread on favorite songs and lyrics see my summing up at http://www.favoritelyrics.shorturl.com
By The Way the full newsgroup can be easily accessed at http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com

P.S. I forgot to say two things
Firstly I forgot to press Erica last week in the chat room for her promised write up extolling the virtues of using mIRC. So be warned I am on the warpath Erkie!!
Secondly I forgot to suggest a topic for tonight or ask last week for a volunteer to set this week's topic. In desperation I am going to suggest:-
"which is your favo(u)rite Gord album cover and why?
Keep taking the tablets and visiting the newsgroup alt.music.lightfoot at http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com
and of course my Lightfoot webring ringmaster's page at http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot

Sorry but I was unable to attend last Friday's session. So I have no idea how many turned up. I hope that both Susan and I can participate this evening at 9pm EST

go to:- http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
I am still hoping for Erkie's long promised write up on the benefits of using mIRC.

Just have a question about the chat room.
(Being VERY computer challanged) would it be wise to install firewalls, etc., etc.???? I need all the advice I can get. Last night
I know that people in the room knew my ISP,
etc. Is this dangerous? Don't get me wrong,
I'm not suspecting anyone else of anything.
Am just questioning my own sanity when I don't know what I am doing. *lol* http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

Watchman,
Thanks so much! Will have to do that ASAP! I do have Norton Antivirus. It's
a weird coincidence, but had just heard someone talking about "Zone Alarm" the other
day. Had never heard of it before.
Thanks again.

brink,
You just got a gray screen at the chat room?
Wasn't there even a little space to type
a nickname in? I'm new at this, too. Hopefully someone will be able to help you figure this out before next Friday.

last friday the chat room resounded to the (typed) babble were 10 chatters
including a number of welcome new chatters
including Louise Madison who posts on corfid
Patricia the previously silent "hurricane7"
"akaruius" from near Ottawa
"Bud the spud"
"kooz" who appeared to bre in/at Steubenville in ohio
I am hoping that some of the above and both Susan and I will be

Brink I am so sorry that you were unable to get in last Friday as LAM pointed out you should have seen a small nickname entry box in the middle of the gray screen if not it might be a problem with your browser's
settings you need to be able to correctly load a Java "applet" small programme which is what the chat room is. But if you follow the recommendation to get to grips with mIRC which does not utilise the aspplet at all I think. As far as I can tell such a problem never occurs
Cheers try again this evening
BTW to those who are worried when using mIRC we cannot actually see your full e-mail address just an indication so that by inspired guesswork I was able to suss out LAM last week and that steubenville was the location for "kooz" another newbie as reported above

Friday's chat Room
there was another successful chat session last Friday
We did not see Louise or Victoria this time but welcomed back for the third time recently the room's founder Rik plus another (former) Oregon resident Susan E. Also making a welcome albeit brief appearance was "the watchman" well known amongst Florian's Corfid Discussion Forum afficiandos as a very frequent and loquacious poster there.
tonight as usual there will be a session commencing at 9pm EST
the direct link is http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
but it is more reliable and quicker if you install the mIRC client
full details on my web ite at http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
this page includes full congfiguration details irc link ref port number etc in a
fully illustrated (screenshots) format.
Rik was delighted to find all his old mIRC special codes were stil functional and the screen was soon full of graphical kisses being blown by Rik in Lori's direction.
I had expected "brink" to turn up but he didn't or was unable to get in despite my message to him on the Corfid discussion forum at http://www.corfid.shorturl.com
If you see this "brink" and still need help please e-mail me at
fowlesjohn@hotmail.com
Tonight's topic suggestion
tonight I think we could usefully discuss the relative merits of the newsgroup (alt.music.lightfoot)
short easy link http://www,newsgroup.shorturl.com
and the alternative as offered on Florian's Corfid site
In particular the fact that as the watchman recently demonstrated there one can use HTML and actually display pictures something that the non-binary newsgroup at least when viewed via Google groups as per the shorturl link I have given above cannot do
Cheers
John Fowles
Finally my Lightfoot "Webring"
ringmaster's site is available for you to use at http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot
please sign the guest book there so I have an idea who is using it and whether it is still useful as I plan a major revamp soon

Watchman, I have not visited the chat room in question. However I have drifted into various chat rooms in the past, and very quickly drifted out. A lot of people seem fixated with ASL. What that has to do with chatting is beyond me. Further to that the "subjects" are incomprehensible. Result, I gave up on chat rooms.

Your right Watchman, they are nice people, and they will give you a warm welcome, and another interesting thing, they all think that Gordon Lightfoot is the greatest singer / songwriter ever born.. It's interesting that when you agree on one thing, there are lots of other things that they all agree about ( and many things they don't !! ). But because of this it has never been necessary to make people stick to a topic ( John tries but has trouble ).
As you say the Chat Room isn't for everyone, but anyone who is interested they will certainly be welcomed by "like minded" people.
I hope to see lot's of people in the room tomorrow to help me celebrate " Australia Day". Fosters lager, meat pies, and Vegimite sandwiches will be on me...
See you there.... Ron http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

There was another successful chat session last Friday with a total attendance of 9 including Char in the apparently rather chilly Toronto area minus (24degrees F or was that Centipede??)
It is definitely warmer in Melbourne and I am led to believe that our Lighthead arsonist there might well put down his matches tomorrow morning for long enough to attend this evening. OK Ron and stop celebrating Australia Day early!!
tonight as usual there will be a session commencing at 9pm EST
the direct link is http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
but it is more reliable and quicker if you install the mIRC client
full details on my web ite at http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
I am hoping that tonight we will see "brink" as per her e-mail to me many thanks. I will also post this on the Corfid discussion forum at http://www.corfid.shorturl.com
the corresponding short snappy link for this newsgroup (alt.music.lightfoot) is http://www,newsgroup.shorturl.com
Tonight I would like to discuss other favo(u)urite singers that attendees might have as I have recently discovered that 2 other Lightheads one of whom is Matthew Bullis in Phoenix who posyts here usefully are like me fans of Buddy Holly and contribute to either the Newsgroup, Corfid and their choice of 2 Holly Yahoo Groups or one of the Lightfoot Groups
Cheers

Umm, John that should be Fire Fighting, not lighting, people are very sensitive about that sort of action around these parts... We have now lost over a million acres of forest and pasture this year, and the worst part of the season is yet to come.
Yes I will certainly be there, and next weekend as well.

And all of a sudden it is Friday again
Last Friday we were a happy crowd of 8 including fire-fighter Ron from Melbourne.
I am very sorry that a certain person tried
to trivialise our chats in this forum. I will say that I do know that several readers from here have ventured into the room and some have even been known to come back for more!!! So there stick that in your pipe any "caretakers" here and smoke it. It is deliberately meant to be a light-hearted session and any attendee is welcome to bring up any GL related topic at any time. Indeed for tonight my suggested topic is "do we need to set a topic each week and could we set up a rota of duty topic-setter for the following week. also another rota for who will post a reminder here", because like another poster here (from the wilds of a New found land) I am getting old enough to catch the dreaded CRAFT disease:-
Can't Remenmber a F****** Thing and am prone to forget to post.
Finally if anyone else is offended by the idea of our chat-room and these reminders then in future just simply ignore this subject altogether.
Time as usual 9pm EST or 2 am Brit time sometime next century in Ozland.
Please see earlier posts above for details of how to get in and get/configure mIRC
Cheers John Fowles(Please note that at least I am not ashamed of my name!!)

We had a very busy session last Friday with a total of 12 attendeees making it somwewhat hard to keep up with all the conversations and topics all the time
Two were recent recruits from the Corfid Discussion Board and we hope the experience was sufficiently rewarding for them to return maybe (tonight at 9 pm EST slightly later in the wilds of a New Found Land to the East) Erica has intimated to me that she might soon be able to produce a compelling essay/guide on why all participants should be using mIRC are you listening Rik?? So I suggest that the topic tonight could be how to use mIRC in Rik's chat room

Friday's Chat room
Last week there were a total of 8 attendees
It is Friday again so tonight why not drop in to Rik's chat room at 9.30 pm EST
the "direct" hyperlink to the basic "Java" room is http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
But it really is time that every chatter was using mIRC
especially now that at last Erica has contributed a brilliant essay on the benefits of so doing
there is a fully illustrated downloading and configuring instructions page on my site at http://mirc.shorturl.com
from the page that opens
scroll to the bottom and click on
"why it is better to use mIRC"
then read the summary on the page headed
"Useful features of mIRC"
then click on the link to "Erica's essay on mIRC benefits"
or go straight to her essay at http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/chatroom/ericasmircessay.htm
Oops I almost forgot to suggest a topic;
having recently found by using Kazaa and WinMx a pile of cover versions including
33rd of August by Joan Baez and a peculiar and suspicious file named
Gordon Lightfoot (with Harry Chapin) - Flowers Are Red.mpg I would like to suggest as a topic the other versions of Gord's songs (I now have 27 versions of Early Morning Rain! including The Grateful Dead's)

last friday there were a total of 9 chatters, including a very welcome revisit by "Tilt" and one newbie from the west of Toronto Doug using the nickname of "khan". It seems he found his way in by using the /list command in his IRC program I do not know if he was using the recomended mIRC or some other IRC Client. We were able to give him an introduction to the wonderful world of Gordon Lighfoot On-line and we all hope to see him again soon. I was particularly pleased that he not only visited my webring ringmasters page at http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot
but also took the trouble to sign my visitor's book. hint hint. Anyway a whole week has since gone by so tonight there will be another session at
9pm EST in Rik's Chat Room accessed either direct through your browser using the Java Applet at http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
or as I will again stress preferably via an IRC client such as mIRC. There are fully illustrated instructions for getting, installing and setting up this program at http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
To try to convince anyone not yet toeing the party line on this subject there is a slightly revised adaptation of Erica's well thought out essay on the following page http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/chatroom/ericasmircessay.htm
Finally everyone very carefully avoided directly discussing the topic of "covers" that I suggested last week.I don't have any other bright ideas for tonight's topic but will suggest that we discuss whether or not we actually need set a topic and if so who is going to take responsibility for thinking one up each week. Tonight I expect the "catman" (Ron) from Melbourne will be in attendance albeit bare backed as no doubt he lost his shirt last week at the races??

Friday's Chat Room at 9 pm EST
---------------------------------------------Last week there were ten of us a'chatting including the welcome return of "bud-the-spud" aka "akarius" from the suburbs of Ottawa,
Page from the deep South and Ed Mullen
I know I keep banging on about the benefits of accessing the chat room via mIRC
Quite by chance I discovered an old Newsgroup thread concerning Rik's Room and mIRC at: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&selm=5t4shd%24lts%241%40news.iquest.net

there are more mIRC references on the Newsgroup. So go to http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com and search alt.music.lightfoot for mirc

You migght like to know that Yes last Friday we did debate my suggested topic "Do we need a topic?" the general consensus was no it is fine and fun to discuss whatever topics naturally come up. Having said that of course if anyone wishes to come and chat and has a topic to suggest then please feel free to post here accordingly preferably on say the Thursday to give us all a chance to bone up on the subject!!
I hope tonight/tomorrow morning that we may gain an insight to the current Australian mini-convention possibly including known delegates Derek Kidd Peter Treloar and (catman)Ron Chidgey all of wehom are now in Melbourne as is "Joveski" who posts frequently on the Corfid Discussion Forum

OK it's Friday yet again. I did not note how many came into the chat room last Friday
But I do know that regular Kim (mytoyota)
wishes to present her apologies for not being able to attend tonight at 9 p.m. EST
as she will be on her way to somewhere warmer. So the room is not likely to be crowded and we would all welcome anyone who has not tried it before. use the links in my earlier postings on this topic/thread

But it is much better to download install then configure mIRC see my fully illustrated details and instructions
at http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
Last week we had a nice attendance of ten including "tilt" and a welcome newcomer "steve" from I think said he was from Plano Texas
tonight we should be blessed again by the presence of Toyota driving Kim who should be reporting on her warm reception in California last week. Which reminds me in New Jersey we had a 7 inch snowfall last Monday
Finally try my webring "ringmaster's" page at:- http://johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot to hear a great spoof record commercial

Two weeks ago it was Good Friday and we were unable to attend the chat session then Last Friday we were busy being entertained at the live Face-to-Face chat at The Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs NY. But life has to return to normal and this evening at 9pm EST both Susan and I should be back a'chatting so come on in everbody and if Ed or Cathy turns up you can get first hand extended accounts of the jollifications. Use the links as before in this thread

Last Friday at least 8 chatters turned up
including
Melbournian/Melburnian (??) Ron
Torontonian Char
Saint Diegan Doug
Peter from PA
Atlantan Ed
Erica/Erkie from Miami (well somebody has to live there!!)
Perhaps this evening we may welcome "new Lighthead-new to cyberspace" Ron Jones from Vancouver
and now with service restored Wendy Wilson (if still awake at 10.30 (I think it is) her time from a New Found Land
so that if Char reappears then Canada would be represented "from the eastern shore to the western strand"!!(I think that might then be for the very first time in the chat room)

Again a reminder about this evenings chat room session
a welcome 9 turned up last week including the debut of a tremulous Ron Jones from Vancouver and Char
Unfortuneately Newfiegirl Wendy had to be away with the men fishing (now I ask you is there anything in the world more tedious and generally futile as sitting by water with a long piece of wood in one's hands. Answer yes baseball a.k.a. rounders (watching grown men with a shorter piece of wood in their hands). ducks to avoid flying beer cans etc
So the anticipated meeting from the easten shore to the western strand failed to take place. Maybe this evening though??
As before the browser link is http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl/com
time 9pm EST
Ed is supplying the drinks as usual. Ron could you bring some Pacific salmon??(We all hope that you venture in again)
Ed will also play Same Old Loverman to enable John and Susan to have another virtual dance
Hopefully catman Ron will reappear this week he is in charge of putting shrimps on the barbie of course
I am copying this to a recent poster to the Newsgroup Ron from New Zealand in the hope that he can attend (Saturday morning) to keep his fellow antipodean in order
Thanks for reading this

Well last week 23 May the chat room was attended during a busy session by 13 total from all over including :-
Vancouver
Toronto
San Francisco
San Diego
Melbourne
including new "lightheadtotoe" Ron Jones who had not been deterred by his first chat room experience the previous week
and we almost chatted with Mende Joveski in Melbourne to back up "catman" Ron but Mende could not actually join in as he was already late for a local Bob Dylan convention
This very evening there will be another session at the usual time of 9 pm EST in http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
(using your browser)
I have strong hopes that Newfundlander Wendy will still be awake at 10.30 pm her time
after a strong caffeine dose so that we might finally have both ends of Canada represented
And don't forget to check the existing Lighfoot site links at my webring ringmasters page at:- http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot

Last Friday we were about 8 strong including the welcome first appearance of prolific newsgroup poster Gary a.k.a. "sputnik"
Which reminds me at least one corfid contributor had not even heard of the newsgroup but then news travels slowly (obviously) to the far reaches of Canada!!
For anyone who cares to make a note of this short url try:- http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com
That takes you straight to the opening page as shown by Google Groups complete with a handy search box to enable you to search the archives of over 25,000 threads going back to the commencement of the newsgroup (alt.music.lightfoot) in 1995 I think it was.
Alternatively and recommended use a newsreader programme or configure your browser, or if you use it Outlook Express to show the newsreader direct from your ISP.
This is much quicker as your postings appear almost immediately not many hours later as with Google
Anyway this very evening Ed will probably be on bar duty again and quite possibly Wendy will make it from Newfoundland to meet Ron from Vancouver
time as usual 9 pm EST

We had a total of eleven happy chatters last week including 2 welcome newcomers Rick from Reno and dino
So it is now Friday the thirteenth and another session beckons at the same time and venue this evening at 9 pm EST
at direct browser entry:- http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
Or as we all recommend by using the chat client (program) mIRC:-
(there seems to be some lingering confusion regarding whether attendees are there courtesy of mIRC or not).Simply put if you have not taken the trouble to read my illustrated guide to mIRC at http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
and actually downloaded the necessary program installation file and then configured it you are
probably simply clicking the browser link above or have it bookmarked. I can't speak for what happens if you are saddled with the AOL browser but with Internet Explorer and Netscape you will still have the usual top of screen display including an address box and with IE at least the very top will show "chat - Microsoft Internet Explorer"
Also to enter you would have entered a nick name in the requisite entry box in the middle of an opening Java applet screen consisting of a grey/gray area filling the available space then clicked on a small "chat" button. If you have mIRC on the other hand you probably started by using the start-programs list to select mIRC
and then you will have gone through the full but simple and painless rigmarole of closing the little display showing
a mugshot of mIRC's author one Khaled Mardam-Bey then clicked on the "Connect to IRC Server" button waited then selected "#gordonlightfootchat" as the channel to join clicked "join" and got what is ostensibly the same Java Applet display as via the browser method but
the very top bar now clearly says mIRC and you have a useful mIRC toolbar to tool away at you will also automatically be listed under the nickname you chose when you configured mIRC so as they say in these parts "go figure/configure" You would then be able to indulge the features of mIRC including copying entered text and pasting it or indeed any other text-jokes Neswsgroup or Discussion Board thread content interesting URLs etc
I hope that might at last clear up the situation
See you later??

During last Friday's chat room session I noted that a total of 15 dropped in including a brief period when both Ron Jones in Vancouver and Wendy on the rock at the other end of Canada were both present for the first time. we will be open to all who would like to chat about The Man or his music at 9 pm EST this evening. I suspect that would be 11 am Saturday in Melbourne or 1 pm in New Zealand.Last week I tried to clarify the situation regarding whether you are using the mIRC chat client or not (if you are then the title bar at the extreme upper left corner of your screen should then say "mIRC" instead of plain "chat"
(that is with Internet Explorer).I still do not know how it appears if you use AOL. But suffice to say that Erkie/Erica has no problem using mIRC with the AOL browser. I intend conducting a survey for the next few weeks to see whether the message of the advantages of bothering with mIRC is getting through.

Hi everybody
It is now early Thursday evening and this
will hopefully be advance warning/reminder that tomorrow Friday in the U.S. is the regular chat night at 9pm EST at:- http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
Last Friday there were 10 in attendance including the return of "morning glory" who we all assumed was the disguise of Kim as it was similar to her usual type of nickname
only when the actual lady left and said she was not Kim did we
know better. Shortly after this I had to leave the room and happened upon the real Kim in AOL IM. So I have to own up that I put her up to immediately signing in to the chat room as
"morning glory". No doubt I will learn tomorrow if this caused any
hilarity

First of all My embarressed apologies regarding my reminder last week
Not only did I think all day Thursday that it was Friday and hence posted my messages a day early but I completely (in the haste to get the message up there) forgot that Friday was indeed July the Fourth when the whole nation here goes on a celebratory binge to commemorate their independance from all that means so much to me.
Also we had already arranged to be out most of the evening anyway to watch our neighbouring town's firework display. So I expect many other regular chatters
from this side of the border were doing likewise (and Roger Guinn in Roswell NM was cursing the rude entourage with Merle Haggard (see his Newsgroup posting for details).
In the event our local extravaganza was rather a flop and compared very poorly with the display we watched with Roger in Roswell last year
So this week or rather tonight (yes it is Friday) I expect a bumper turn-out at 9PM EDT at the usual place http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
John Fowles
I have no commercial interest in fireworks,Roswell or Merle Haggard for that matter

Last Friday
7 of us met in the chat room
and were joined for a while by a first time visitor using the nickname acousticman. We never learned who he/she was although the initials mjo were put up at one point so maybe it was the new guitar owner Melissa Joe??
Anyway tonight at 9 pm EDT we'll be gathering again
in what we still refer to as "Rik's Chat Room" at:- http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com

Last Friday I make it that 8 attended the chat session
including Ed safely returned from Ireland
he revealed that he had added a page on his travels to his web site at http://edmullen.net/ireland01.html
Ed nice pics but not all of us are blessed with high speed connections so you really should have utilised the time-honored thumbnail gallery method!!
I also liked your comment about the lack of hard-shoulders.
I well remember a high speed drive along the southern coast road to Cork it must have been turnip-harvest time as the hard shoulder was frequerntly used as a dumping place for huge and dangerous heaps of them
No doubt Ed you have a store of apocryphal anecdotes
my favo(u)rite 2 from that trip are:-
1.Before we even left England a telephoned enquiry to our hosts in Cork on where we should meet them elicited this reply
"on the dual carriageway (divided highway)"! They explained that at that time in all of Eire there were but 2 stretches of such a road theirs and one in Dublin!
2.In Waterford after we had sampled the local brews we asked a friendly barmaid
"Where can we get some good fish and chips?"
She replied I kid you not "Oh to be sure that's a problem
there are some that have good fish but poor chips
and others that have the good chips but poor fish!!"
In fact the very first place we went into had both good fish and good chips (french fries).
I can still taste the Mackerel in batter something one does not usually find in one of the "Great British Takeaways"
Anyway I have digressed
Tonight there should be another chat session at the usual time 9 pm EDT and place http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com

Yet Another Reminder
Attendance at last week's session was 10 including one newcomer
"fawnlily" who having been mistaken for Kim
apparently eventually identified herself as Helen.
This evening there should be another chat at 9PM EDT.That is of course assuming that no silly burgher in either Toronto,Ottawa,Detroit,Cleveland,New York City or Hartford CT
manages to fuse the lights again. The power outage affected us here last night
for all of about 2 minutes but then we do reside about a mile from the very spot where Thomas Edison in the 1880s built the world's first municipal electricity generating plant
and our town in January 1883 became the first in the United States to be wired for electricity. Also one of our local churches apparently still uses the original
"lightolier" that made it the first church in the United States to be lit by electricity. A feature that must have been very enlightening for the congregation
There's not many people know that as Michael Caine would say
So tonight the venue is http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com

and a very welcome first visit by Norm Miller who next year will be setting out from Montana to
paddle his own canoe (hopefully by then painted canary yellow??)) all the way to the sea 3500 miles solo next year retracing
Lewis & Clark during the bicentennial of that expedition.
for newsgroupers this is the subject of a corfid forum topic:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001665.html
and see his web site at:- http://www.lewisandclark-2004.com

Would you believe it's Friday again. A very nice attendance of ten came into last Friday's chat session.
Tonight same time 9PM EDT and place http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
At least one person last week reported a problem getting to the Newsgroup via my shorturl link:- http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com
All very strange because that short url has never failed to work for me
If that does not work go to http://www.google.com. click on the middle item "groups" then simply enter lightfoot in the search box.
a few sample newsgroup postings are shown but at the top under"related groups" it should show alt.music.lightfoot. click on that link and bingo!!
Cheers
