Hi Sheryl,
A friend and I are flying down from Vancouver Island (Friday and Sat. night shows!) You mentioned getting together somewhere prior to show time on Saturday night. Sounds great...any ideas where...let me know. And by the way, we think of Gord as ours up here; we are really only loaning him to you folks down south!

Richard Whoa, Richard, them's fightin' words!!!
(LOL!!) We LOVE that man, heart and soul!! There's enough to share...!! And, yes, definitely let's get together. I've never been to that hotel before, but, we can certainly find a place to meet and hang out beforehand, right, Brink? Any ideas?

Hi Sheryl,
Without any real idea of what the casino looks like, how about two hours prior to the show at the main entrance to the theatre?
Just a suggestion...unless an alternative comes to mind.

at the door is fine with me, then off to maybe the alligator bar? Or we could meet for dinner before the show. Since the show is at 8:00 what would be open afterward?

I can't go and I'm pouting!!!!!

But Cerritos looms large.

I don't want much, I just want it all.

If y'all are gonna be in Las Vegas a day or two, there's a great drive up Kyle Canyon Road, off the fwy running north of town, into the mountains (even have a ski resort,) and a great place for a horse ride.

Hoagy's Stables (if it's still there)rents w/o a guide. A winter ride in the snow, alone on a Red Chief Appallusa (sp?)is a vivid memory of one particular birthday.

In case Gord's music moves you to the mountains,

Have you ever seen a horse laugh? Well, that would be mine if I were on one. The last time I was on one, about 20 years ago, I swear he laughed at me. Horses *know* who's the boss when I'm on them -- THEY are. I don't know how to make them go! And kicking them in the ribs just seems mean.

Horses Know Who's the Boss of Them:

Absolutely!

In the early 70s, my pardner & I were playing at a hotel in Missoula, MT. We made a deal w/ a local stable owner in East Missoula to trade free rides for on-stage plugging his stable.

The first day we went riding, both horses headed off the road into the tall grass, lowered those beautiful heads, and commenced to eatin'

A person is just not strong enough to pull a horses neck up when the horse don't want to.

So, we spent the next two hours aboard horseflesh while they ate . . . much to the amusement of the passers by.

Not cool, no matter how much pretending we did that we'd done the choosing to let 'em graze.

Hey,

Is anybody going to be in Vegas Sunday, May 1,or even the 2nd? My wife, Ronette & I are catching the Sunday show, & will probably check into the Orleans around noon.

Rez, that horse place sounds intriguing. I grew up on a farm on the banks of the Mississippi River, 10 miles outside of New Orleans & horses were a part of daily life. I think that connection to nature is a strong part of my 35 year attachment to GL's music.

If you want to meet for dinner...name the place!
Sounds great!
We'll undoubtedly bring our library of Gord (and other) experiences so that sounds like a great time. Keep in touch.

How soon do we line up before the show, I want to know. Do we have to queue up? Even though we have assigned seats... I've only been to one Vegas show ever. YES, Craig, I will be on hand Sunday until my plane leaves at 4:25... so I'll have some time, or at least an hour or two for certain, until I have to find my way to the airport. <boo hooooo>. I'd love to spend time with you and your lovely wife, and anyone else. Richard? Let's all meet, absolutely. I guess meeting at the doors to the showroom??? What, 2 hours before? Sounds good to moi. On the website for the casino, there are several restaurants. We can certainly find something before then or even just then, can't we? Frankly, I think I'll be too excited to eat...

Hi Brink,
The seats aren't bad....actually I could have had a pretty good pick, but with the Canadian dollar (getting better but still sick) I went for middle price on Friday and "cheaper" on Saturday. The lady assured me I would be no farther than 50 feet from the stage...which even in meters isn't too bad.
I tossed around the idea of Massey, but the flights in Canada are quite expensive; I'm flying out of Bellingham...and it is a good hour and a half closer.
As for dinner...anything is fine except for KFC and Mc....Looking forward to meeting with you folks and having a great chat.

Hey Sheryl & all,

Would be nice to see you in Vegas May 1 before the plane if that's doable. We'll keep in touch on that one, OK? Will you by any chance be coming to to Mimi's before the Cerritos show?

Know what you mean about too excited to eat.

Excellent, Dave! Brink, WWG (Craig), Richard, and I will look forward to meeting you! Brink and I are staying there, too, but, I don't think we'll be getting much sleep -- we'll be WAY too excited! So, we're meeting two hours ahead of showtime - maybe we should make it 3? in front of the doors to the showroom and then we'll find some place for dinner. What say you all? 3 hours instead so we can actually eat and greet rather than rush and gush?

sounds fine to me...three hours before. (I've got no place to go!)
I'm kind of envious to hear you are staying at the Orleans. My hotel is the "Terribles"!
Gotta love those two stars!
Hey, I crept into a sound check of Gord's a few years ago in Bellingham. Some kind of fun doing that....almost like two concerts for the price of one.
Two weeks to go (14 sleeps!)

Hi Sheryl, et al
The five o'clock meeting seems set in stone
or as someone near and dear to us might say "The wheels are set in smooth rotation".
As for "sneaking" into a sound check it was sort of like "walk in backwards and tell them..."
The posted guard was nowhere to be seen and so, official-like, the two of us walked with authority and audacity (it had been a long time since I had been thrown out of a theatre) to a spot in the balcony and stayed quiet and low.
It was sort of like eves dropping in on a private party, but hey....
A year or so later I tried something similar in Seattle, by offering the doorman ten dollars to turn away. He said, "You obviously haven't tried to bribe a doorman lately, have you?"
(Maybe I shouldn't have used a Canadian bill.)
I'm quite new here, so Sheryl, catch me up if you can...where are you living....LA? Have you seen much of Gord in the past ? Looking forward very much to our get together!
Night all

$10 to bribe a doorman seemed good to me! But, I guess, as far as bribes go... probably shoulda been a $20.. oh, well, HEY, let's try it together in Vegas! HEHEHEHHE!! What say you?

Yes, I live in Los Angeles (well, the San Fernando Valley), and, no, I've *never* seen Gord before. I'm somewhat new here, since October, and I've "re-discovered" my love of Gord since then. I'm in "full-tilt love," as Borderstone would say... ;)

You've NEVER seen Gord before??? Wow, It will be great to talk to you after the show to get your thoughts.
The San Fernando Valley....it has such a nice ring to it. It does sound idyllic for some reason. I don't think Gord has done a song about that yet; after all what would rhyme with Fernando? (On the other hand, what would rhyme with gitchee gumee?)
Let's keep in touch!

John, you are SO funny!!

Richard, I'll be flying up to Vegas, but, a week or so prior to that, driving about 15 minutes west of where I live to Agoura Hills to see him. I am VERY excited!!! Yes, the VAlley is a nice bedroom community, a suburb, if you will. I'm 5 min. from Universal Studios, 10 min. freeway drive to Hollywood, 20 min. through the canyon (over the hill) to Beverly Hills. I like living in the Valley rather than the City. Quieter. I'm a quiet-life type of gal. I'm a stay-at-home mom and I volunteer at the kids' schools, and do my errands during the day... and order take-out for dinner, hahahahhaah! And listen to GL every chance I get! You need to join us in John's Friday night chatroom. We have lots of fun! Please join us next week! Whoops, well, i won't be online next week, I'll be busy...., but, the following week I'll be on.

So, what rhymes with Fernando... well, if you're my age or older, you'll remember that song by ABBA called "Fernando." I think they just stuck it in there and didn't bother with the rhyming problem! Now, gitchee goomee... there's a problem..... !! Take care!

Rhymes with Gitchee Gumee....how about "the skies of November turned gloomy" Ring a bell?
Your Fernando Valley does sound wonderful, (I suppose after a time those places you mention are taken for granted and yes, I do recall the ABBA song. I think they like the Spanish sound of it. I'll be watching for your comments the week of the conerts to hear your impressions.
I'll try to join up on Friday but my computer may not cooperate as it is of vintage era. Still, thanks for the invitation and I'll give it a tr!

O.K., Richard, I have a bit of trivia for you!! A song was written about the San Fernando Valley and hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart on April 29, 1944. It was sung by Roy Rogers (you've heard of him?!) in the 1943 movie, "San Fernando Valley." Here are the lyrics for you:

"Oh I'm packin' my grip and I'm leavin' today,
cause I'm taking a trip California way
I'm gonna settle down and never more roam,
and make the San Fernando Valley my home.

I'll forget my sins, I'll be makin' new friends,
where the West begins and the sunset ends
Cause I've decided where yours truly should be
and it's the San Fernando Valley for me.

I think that I'm safe in statin',
she will be waitin' when my lonely journey is done
And kindly old Rev'rend Thomas made us a promise,
he will make the two of us one

So I'm hittin' the trail to the cow country,
you can forward my mail care of R.F.D.,
I'm gonna settle down and never more roam
and make the San Fernando Valley my home."

And here's the website for more info about the lovely place where I grew up! http://www.americassuburb.com/home.html

Originally, orange groves were everywhere. As more veterans from the Korean War and WWII got married and moved their families here, the groves became more sparse as more housing tracts were built. There is still the occasional grove here and there, and many homes still have at least one or two orange trees. I've lived here my whole life and love it.

Oh, one more thing. The movie, "Chinatown" with Jack Nicholson was loosely based on the bringing of water to the Valley. Here's another quote from the website:

"Nothing altered the Valley's future like the opening on Nov. 5, 1913 of an aqueduct between the Eastern Sierra's Owens Valley and a reservoir west of San Fernando. The waterway designed by William Mulholland transformed a parched region into an irrigated greenbelt."

Perhaps you remember the name of John Huston's character: Mulwray.... coincidence? I think not.

Also, one last interesting tidbit:

The Beatles first performance in Los Angeles caused a frenzy that ran for several days. Fearing wild fans, officials barred the band from using Burbank Airport. The Fab Four stayed in a private home since no hotel could stand the onslaught of fans.

Hours before their first sold-out concert at Hollywood Bowl the evening of August 23, 1964, Beatlemania hit Studio City. The Beatles dropped in on for a "secret" press conference at the Cinnamon Cinder, a nightclub for teenagers at 11345 Ventura Boulevard.

The Cinder belonged to Bob Eubanks, the KRLA disc jockey (now TV personality) who also presented the Beatles concert. He thought the club would be a quiet place to let writers interview the band. He was wrong.

At about 7 p.m., the Beatles tried to sneak in. Word got out, however, and Ventura Boulevard was mobbed. "More than 400 teenagers staged a mass attack," the now-defunct Valley Times reported. One 15-year-old girl threw herself in front of the Beatles' limousine, but was unhurt.

Fans who didn't get to see the Beatles at the Cinder or the Bowl always had the drive-in. That week, "A Hard’s Day Night" was screening at the Sepulveda Drive-in."

Did I mention that I grew up in Studio City?! Verrry interesting place!

Hi Sheryl,
Wow, I'm overwhelmed and hardly know where to begin to reply.
Orange trees in your back yard sound spectacular and exotic. I suppose faraway places do that to you. Hey, bring some pictures if you can....love to see them.
Î do remember Chinatown so I suppose I've seen some of the sights of the valley as it was "supposed to be" in 1940 or so.
....where on earth did you dig up that song from?
So a little trivia in return...Gord's video Harry Tracy was filmed on Vancouver Island just north of where I live!
See you in a couple of weeks

We're only going to have 3 hours to meet and greet, Richard! I think everyone will be bored by my bringing pictures of my yard, LOL!!! If I get brave, I'll take a picture or two and post it on the Test Forum (trying to get a bit more faith in myself on that front). However, I will talk off your ear and listen just as well when I see you! I visited Vancouver when I was 13 or so, beautiful area! I loved putting one foot on U.S. soil and the other on Canadian soil and saying, "Hey, Daddy! I'm in two countries!" Hey...I was 13! (too many years ago!) Insofar as that obscure San Fernando Valley song goes...I remember hearing it on a radio station about 20 years ago. They were playing obscure (or older) songs and this one came up... and it just stuck in my memory. I googled for it so I could find the link (John, aren't you proud of me?). I think we should continue this stuff on the non GL topic section... I'm getting off topic!
