Just to let you know that I saw the message re: mp3's jan 20th 2000 in the forum and it had been edited by admin. Does this go agains't freedom of speech?.
I feel that sometimes people can take some things one step too far.

By the way, for the record I am a lawyer. On the subject of midi files they are just as illegal as mp3's. You are using Gordons music and reproducing it without his permission. Oh sorry do you have his written permission.

Well what can I say. To put the record straight my four year old son is in hospital and I have to find this song NOW and go back to the hospital so he can hear it with my MP3 player. Why do you think companys make mp3 players.

Honestly, I didn't know they do make them. I also don't even know what an MP3 is even, all I know is that the issue causes huge stress on this forum.

Well I thought to myself, hmmmm who would be able to help me so I looks on the net and finds what seems to be a friendly forum that MIGHT be able to help me but it seems to many people are worried about what is and what is not the thing to do. At the end of the day this song means so much to me and my son. I am a single parent, live in the UK and is 29. I will find this song and I am still looking now whilst keeping an eye on this forum.

To the FAN who wanted the song (There are so many "Fans" posting now, I'm having trouble keeping you straight -- lol)

If you can afford a "machine" to play an MP3, perhaps you might consider buying the song on cassette tape or even CD and getting a portable CD player or Walkman or whatever to play it on in the hospital. I'm sure that would be a lot less costly. The song is available on the album "If You Could Read My Mind", "Gord's Gold" and "Songbook" although the latter may be a bit "pricey" for your needs. Hope this helps.

To "A Fan": Most music that is on CD today is still not legally available in mp3 format, either on the web or on a CD. This is a technology that is still emerging, and it is exciting. What some people probably don't understand is that the much smaller files are not only therefore downloadable (vs. the original digital format), but at about 1/10 the size of the full file, you can pack 10x as much music on each CD. So you can take 150 to 200 songs with your portable player on just a single CD. In fact, many people predict that in five years, you won't see traditional CDs or CD stores anymore.

However, the music industry isn't quite there yet, and little is legally downloadable. The people here (and on the Usenet newsgroup alt.music.lightfoot , where they are having the same discussion), are trying to abide by copyright law. Furthermore, Florian, as webmaster of this site is in a particularly difficult position because this discussion board - while containing messages from lots of people - is part of his site. Should the copyright owner feel that the information here is telling people where to get bootleg recordings (and mp3s of Lightfoot's music would be bootleg recordings), Florian would be the person sued. As you are perhaps aware, most web sites that contain mp3s, or which even point to them or provide search assistance, eventually disappear. None of us want this site to disappear, and that is part of why we are reluctant to discuss this.

In addition, all of us want to see more Lightfoot music released. The "new" tracks on the boxed set (16 of them) are probably just the tip of the iceberg. I'm pretty sure there are more unreleased tracks in Lightfoot's archives, plus live recordings. So, as with any artist, if the released CDs don't sell as well as they could, the chances for more CDs in the future are reduced.

IYCRMM is, in fact, one of the two most frequently requested Lightfoot songs on the Internet. There is a Usenet newsgroup where people do request and post mp3s (mostly using aliases to disguise their own identity). There are a few web sites that have it, and there is a software program (under legal attack) that enables people to access each other's mp3 files. So, if you must have that song on mp3 now, and you can't go out and buy it (and then create your own mp3 to download to your player), a day's research on the net should solve your problem. Good luck!

Fan,

Here is a thought. The lyrics are readily available on this website and could be easily copied to word format. Perhaps you could sing the song to your son yourself. I 'trust' this would mean more to him than a recording.

'You've got alot more livin' to do'

I smell a big rat. IYCRMM for a 4 year old son from a father????? Come on. My guess? This person works for a record company and is trying to nail someone for a copyright violation. He saw the battle about this issue and the copies already offered on this forum and figured he could drop in a worm and catch a big one. Don't fall for it people!

If you believe your child will respond to or appeciate listening to this song, then that would suggest he has heard it before. It would also suggest he probably heard it at home, probably on tape or CD. So why does he need to hear it in MP3 format - no logical reason - we all owned portable tape and CD players long before we had the luxury of owning a MP3 player (which I don't).
