Cathy's CD, Songs For A Winter's Night, Is Available!

For those of you who weren't peaking in at the newsgroup while Corfid was down:

Songs For A Winter's Night

Let's call Tuesday, 12/19 the "release date" (has to be Tuesday, right?), but the CD is now available from Cathy's web site at www.cathycowette.com (http://www.cathycowette.com) .

There are 13 tracks, 6 of which of Lightfoot songs* (what a surprise, right?). The others are by Jim Croce, Kate Wolf, Eric Clapton, Steve Goodman, Dan Fogelberg, and Davie Graham, plus there is one original instrumental called ... Toronto In May. That was written for the May, 2001 Lightfoot concert series. Seems like a lifetime ago, doesn't it?

Most of you are already familiar with Cathy's music, so I probably don't have to say much. For anyone who hasn't heard her before, listen to the clips on her web site.

It was a long wait, but it was worth it.

Congratulations to Cathy for a great CD!

*For those who don't want to have to look further, the 6 Lightfoot songs are: Song For A Winter's Night, Redwood Hill, If You Could Read My Mind, Home From The Forest, Ribbon of Darkness and Heaven Help The Devil.

Cathy your a wonderful person, and very funny at times. Did listen to
,"Song For A Winters Night," it is very good. Love your finger pickin.
If I was closer, I would like to try your 12 String Garrison. Maybe
accompany you. You on your 6 String Martin, and me playing the 12
string. There would maybe be something there,{Cathy & Jesse} folk

Hey Cathy, your obviously not superstitious, about the # 13. I am a bit, as is Gordon, who said it from his latest interview w/ Barry Keane, on {Fan 590.}

When I heard him mention that, I thought to myself, now I know he has something in common with me. {LOL}

Wonder what he thinks about Toronto Maple Leafs great, Mats Sundin, # 13 ?...

For those who don't have their copy yet - GET ONE!
This is a lovely compilation of songs by Cathy. Her voice is so easy to listen to and I absolutely love her singing and playing. Always have!
Those two elements alone would have made this a terrific CD but the quiet little additions by Bob Doidge add a finished touch that really make this a treat to listen to.
I remember several years ago when Cathy e-mailed me her instrumental song "Toronto in May" ....who knew it would be on your own CD Cathy!?!?!

and when I first heard her singing at the Massey 2001 get together and my home in 2001....wow - talent plus AND a great smelling geetar to boot!
She can rightly be proud of this CD - it's a keeper Cathy!
The artwork that mum did is, as usual, gorgeous!

Thanks for bringing this to the top again Char! I got a copy of Cathy's cd a week ago, and have to chime in about how great it is. Cathy, you must be very proud! You and Bob did a great job with it. I love Hazels painting too, worth the wait.

So when is the next one coming out?

I have the real picture hanging in my living room, along with a picture of an old sailboat she did. That one reminds me of Marie Christine.

I really don't remember a heck of a lot about recording it... just a few short images here and there. I'm hoping my old brain will heal up enough to get those memories back.

You remind me of Bill Blakeney. He keeps asking, "So when do we plan the second one?"

I'll tell you the same as I told him.... "The second what?" :eek:

I can't even imagine not even knowing that there were others out there like me who were into this stuff to the degree that I was and doing something about it. Look at the intensity in the facial expressions. You can almost hear the notes just by looking at the photo. These guys are giving it their 100% and more. What I wouldn't give to have been part of that gig. They were the innovators. They were the very first Lightfoot Tribute Band. They did it and pulled it off before anyone else did and that should never be forgotten. It's kinda like history in the making. Thanks to all. Ron J.

Sheesh... you make me feel old!

Actually, there's a band in Mass. (I think) that did Lightfoot tributes before we did, and had great success at them. I met one of the guys at a house concert a few years back, and we had a great time jamming. I don't recall the band's name, though. Val would probably know who I'm talking about.

Th band is headed by Paul and Melanie Motter. They do concerts to raise money for for "worthwhile organizations leading the fight against hunger and poverty (and other causes) in the tradition of Harry Chapin". They perform fully arranged versions of songs by Harry Chapin, Jim Croce, and Gordon Lightfoot, as well as several others.

I first emailed with Paul many years ago, when he was thinking of doing his first Lightfoot tribute. Now it's part of the tradition.

I'm not certain that they did their first tribute before you did, however, although they were thinking about it. I'll have to look back in my mail and see!

Jenney and I (and John) attended one concert in Hartford two or three years ago. It was great.

Ah, yes. Paul and Melanie. I remember now. It was a house concert in that disabled guy's house. We saw him at a Dave Mallet concert last year... Bob somebody. I think he's since passed away.

Yes. Bob Blue. He was quite a legend, and very highly regarded - and loved - in the folk community.

The last time I saw Bob was at that Dave Mallet concert we went to, a little over a year ago. I think he died shortly after that. I wish I would have taken the time to say hello to him.

yes, these Lightfoot tributes go back decades but they were more 'open mic songwriter theme' nights, of which I always enjoyed the GL ones the most becuase with the cataloge so large you wouldn't end up getting musicians playing a bunch of radio hits only when it was a Gord night:)

but this past decade's caffe lena tribute and hugh room and TWIF tour are the most orgranized and formal tributes to Gord that you will come across (unless there's something overseas), it really great and I'm just learning more about that caffe lena gig and heard some really fun sound clips too, talent and heart combined:) ...thanks for the satinwood link, neat stuff:)

when i hear the These Dreams clip (wow, really showcases your all around talent!) i am reminded of how robbed we acoustic/songwriter fans were of what lengthy and tasty Croce catalog would be out there now, and what live collaborations (not to mention , more parties:) he and Gord would have been part of ...your arrangement is just a wonderful song for a winter's night (such as last night), once again, way to go!

CC, i was definetly referring to the sample (thx for all the tips, VM!) of your very cool CD where i heard of your take on that Croce classic...your vox delivery and BD production is also really wonderful...i'm never as specific as i should be, in an earlier thread when i commented on great 'tone', i meant your voice, not the geetar but it sounds real fine also...i'm more of a vocal focused geek, not a guitar freak like so many on the lightheads out there, lol...if it's got strings and can be tuned, we're good to go...get your copy, folks...i'll be doing so in order to hear full length version and to hear real audio, not just 'realaudio'...listening to music on laptop speakers does not do one's meticulous studio work any justice

Hey Cathy,you'll have to excuse my not congratualting you sooner about your CD. :redface: I've seen the thread but was so caught up in the concert and other things,I kept forgeting to say something.

So,many congratualtions! :) At this time I'm sorry to say,I can't order one although I'd surely like too. Fact is,I'm on the job hunt again. :( Yep,I was politely let go a couple hours ago.

...but! I'm not going to let it get me down and I'm certainly going to get another job and when i do,I'm getting your CD Cathy! :)

I'm with you there on this one JJ. I was kind of hoping that "I'm Not Sayin" was on this one as Cathy's version definitely is a piece of work that needs to be heard and shared. The guitar work alone that she does is really an extended compliment to the original recording. And I know of no other female voice that has come out with a version of that tune. It's always been one of my faves and I just love cranking it out on the B45. So Cathy we're waiting in line for Volume 2. Better put Bob Doidge on alert. Cheers, Ron J.
