Whilst carrying out a routine google for GL images I spotted a page headed
"Early Morning Rain
Folk Music, Coffee Houses, Gordon Lightfoot and Buffy Sainte-Marie in the Early Sixties
by Beverlie Robertson"
at:-
http://www.mouthbow.org/early.html
which sheds some possible light on how, where and when Gord wrote this song ,which I believe he usually associates wihn Los Angeles airport...
part of the article was:-
I met Buffy in the very early 60's when I was a singer with the Canadian group "The Chanteclairs" (still am after 40 years!)......
AT that time, Ian and Sylvia were starting out and were among the first Canadian folkies to crack New York. Gordie Lightfoot heard early Bob Dylan songs and felt that he should also give voice to his own poetry, impressions and thoughts. Early Morning Rain was written when we were performing at the Sault Ste. Marie festival and had been up all night at the zoo watching the buffalo herd before our flight home. Yes, it was drizzling...actually a Scotch mist and our plane was leaving very early in the morning (see photo)

From top to bottom: Estelle Klein, Bonnie Dobson, Klaas Van Graft, Gord, me and Ken Duncan. Klaas and Ken are the other two Chanteclairs. For Gord, the rest is history.
John Fowles
It looks to me very likely that the aircraft in that picture is a Trans Canada Airlines Vickers Vanguard a type I had much to do with whilst in Montreal in the 60's

I used to fly to Timmins on one of those planes when I was a little kid....either that or take the train...
Estelle Klein was a big part of the Mariposa Folk Festival right from it's inception in 1961. She passed away last summer I believe.

Gordon doesn't look too pleased to have his picture taken at that moment.

I guess he feels an invasio of privacy is at hand.:rolleyees: Can't blame him if he was tired or in a bad mood.
