This is a new topic on the subject of a new live GL album.
{Sunday concerts great but it's thirty years old!}

Why hasn't there been a new live album?
Should there be one?
When will there be one?
Should there be one, what tracks would you like to be on there?
My set would finish with 'Highway songs', with 'Carefree highway' as an encore.
Thats as far as I've got...

Can I say anything more about this non existant live album...probably, but lets hear from you.

Here is my "Dream-Live-Album":

In addition to the regular CD, there would also be a special collector's edition.

Included with the CD is an elegantly looking box, including the CD, a full size poster and a comprehensive booklet with lots of photos and stories like "Gordon Lightfoot shares little known facts and funny things from his long and successful carreer on stage." Also included is a video-cassette of the live performance that was recorded.

I'll give it a try to do my personal setlist:

1.
A Painter Passing Through - because it's so very personal and actually "says it all".

2. Dreamland - I consider this to be a Lightfoot "Classic".

3.
Forgive Me Lord - Gordon Lightfoot really seems to enjoy playing this song live, and it will make you smile as you listen to it.

4.
A Tree Too Weak To Stand - an all-time favorite of mine.

5.
Alberta Bound - you can hear how frantically the audience enjoys this song (even though in general I am against clapping along).

6.
If You Need Me - a little soft touch after the toetapper.

Now brace yourself as the audience interrupts this song after the first few words with applause:

Canadian Railroad Trilogy
A total of 11 min. long, because Gordon Lightfoot keeps on singing parts 2 & 3 over and over again.

I listened to several cover-versions, but none came close to the original (sorry, Elvis)

Well, that's my wish list for a "live-CD".

So I guess you might call my CD: "Songbook-Live".

I, along with everyone else would love to see an updated live album. I think the only thing thats keeps it from happening is that they may feel that it might hurt the attendance to his live shows. Looking forward to the PBS special

1)Salute(a lot more living to do)
A good opener.

2)Song for a winter's night.
A surprise.
You need a slow love ballad to even the set.
Powerful imagery,it's also a favourite.

3)Summer side of life.
I've got a soft spot for the album,
it's the first one I bought,
it also came out in '71,the year I first followed Gord.
In all honesty, the track has lost some of it's impact because I really have played it so many times.
But I include it because of the reasons given.

4)Nous vivons ensemble.
A lot was made of the politics of this song.
I just think it's a beautiful song.
'We've got to live together'
Simple and true.

5)If you could read my mind.
Essential.
The song that connected me to Gord.
I would imagine it's essential for a lot of people.
Including Gord himself.

6)Forgive me Lord.
I'm with you on this one Florian.
It's the best track of the previously unreleased from songbook.
It's hot because it's still new to me at the moment.

7)Canadian railroad trilogy.
Surprise,surprise...
I chose this one over the other two epics.
It's been around a lot longer,Gord seems to like it, which would make for a good performance.
It's criminal to leave out Seven Island and the Wreck,but something's got to give.

8)Rainy Day People.
This is the one big surprise.
It was never a favourite of mine in the seventies and eighties,but it's grown on me in the last few years.
I played it a few days ago and it sounded as good as anything he's ever done.

9)Early Morning Rain.
Just as essential as IFYCRMM.
His most celebrated song from his UA days.
It's also a brilliant song.

10)Summertime Dream.
Optimistic,joyous,fun.
A song to appeal to all age groups.

11)Cotton Jenny.
See above.

12)Shadows.
Very personal(can't reveal).

13)Minstrel Of The Dawn.
Full of wisdom.
One of his best ever vocal performances.
Even warmer and clearer than normal.

14)Fading Away.
Good groove.
Try keeping still to this one.

15)Drifters.
There has to be a track from the most recent album.It was this or Uncle Toad Said,I couldn't choose between them.So I flipped a coin.

16)Ride,let it ride.
East Of Midnight represented.

17)She's not the same.
Who wouldn't want a red hot flame.

18)Don Quixote.
Second best vocal performance.
Type of song you really feel you should include.

19)Highway Songs.
This would be a great finale.
The power and energy at the end of this song
is staggering.
It's almost as if it's going to come out of the speakers.

There was never any doubt in my mind that this would be the last track.
If you are going to say good bye to the man,this is the song.
If I start to list the merits of the song,I'll be here a long time.
Let's just say the music speaks very well for itself.
What man cannot relate to the line,

'I've got to see you my old friend'.
I've been asked many times what my favourite Gordon Lightfoot song is and I've never been able to answer.

Next concert I go to I'm going to leave a request on stage for this one and just keep my fingers crossed. I've never heard it in concert. Oh yeah, and Rainbow Trout and Tattoo, just because they're great songs. That's my two cents.

That's about as long as a concert right? This is kind of like picking your favorite Lightfoot song -- picking the ones you would want to hear in concert or a live album is just too hard.

I have to say that if GL told me (yeah right) he could record this dream live album or go ahead and do a new studio recording of all the new songs he's been working on, I'd pick the new songs in a minute. And, I have a feeling I'm not alone in that.

I know this sounds a little far fetched but I wonder how hard it would be to sell the A&E channel on producing this as a live show? The reason I asked, is this is how ablums and shows get started. Someone somes up with a great idea and we build from there. Input anyone?

Otterjudy: Yellow Bird is one of two bootlegs from Koala. The other, Get Together, was also released in 1979. Both albums contain several tracks which are NOT Gordon Lightfoot. When you listen again, it will be obvious to you. You are very (very!) lucky to have that LP. It goes for about $200 on Ebay!

On your album, the GL songs are:The Auctioneer, Turn, Turn, Turn, The Way I Feel, Song of the Groundhog, Ribbon of Darkness, and Long River. Those songs, and the ones on Get Together are all from a live performance at a Detroit bar called La Cave in June of 1964.

As mentioned to Florian in a separate e-mail, I own a copy of a semi-bootleg CD which popped up in German stores a couple of years ago.
This is a 60-minute recording of Gordon´s Montreux Festival show, taped in the summer of 1977.
It highlights a few songs off "Summertime Dream", the most recent album at the time, but also classic tracks as CRT (I´m learning), IYCRMM, "Sundown" and "Softly". The overall stereo sound quality is quite good if you can live with minor tape hiss and too-dominant backup vocals on some tracks. I am typing this from the office, so I can´t get you the detailed track list - but if anybody´s interested I can provide you with that when I´m home later tonight. At least this show is only 23 years old, and offers a wider selection than the "Sunday Concert" recording. Also, Gord´s voice as in ship-shape that night. I wonder why Warner Bros never released this officially, as it does sound like a professional taping.

Montreux (on June 26,1976 in spite of what the CD says) was taped for radio broadcast, so it is a sound board recording and not an audience recording. That is why it sound so "good". But the mix is really dreadful. You are kind in your comment about the too prominent backup vocals. Mind you, some of the songs sound great with backup vocals (as they are on the studio recordings), but Montreux really demonstrates what can happen when someone who doesn't know what they are doing produces the mix for the recording. I really have to laugh when I listen to Terry on Race Among The Ruins (when it's really Gord I'd rather hear!) ...

The funniest part of the recording is when Gord, frustrated by the audience clapping along, yells out (mid-song) "Cool it! Cool it! Leave the driving to us" ... I remember him doing that at a 70s concert at SPAC (Saratoga Springs) as well, and during the same song (The Auctioneer). Some people criticize him for that, but if you listen carefully to the recording you can tell that - difficult as the cadence of the song is - he has a hard time maintaining it with the audience clapping along imperfectly as would be true of any group of people. To this day, I cringe when people clap along with his songs. He never complains anymore, but I can't believe that he really likes it. Amazingly, at Massey in November, when he was taping the concert for a possible live album, people there - who should know better - clapped along, even to Trilogy. Now really, how can anyone think that CRT is a "clap-along" song?

Regarding official release of this concert, Gord wasn't taping it for an album release. It was taped for a radio broadcast, and the later release on CD was unauthorized. Gord never intended it for a live album, so it would never have been considered by WB for an official album.

I am usually very fond of live recordings even if they are technically sub-standard, as they often convey more emotion than the studio versions (not in this case, though). I have had this Montreux CD since 1992 (I think), have exchanged its dreadful original cover with a decent self-made one (hobby of mine)and still enjoy listening to it with all of the imperfections. At the time I bought this bootleg all I had of "Live Gordon" was a seriously worn version of the "Sunday Concert", about 12 years old, so that CD came as a welcome addition to the collection.

It is great to be in touch with other people appreciating the uncomparably wonderful music of GL; I hope we´ll keep this thing up for years to come.

Yes, Christian, it's Connecticut. I hope, being in Germany, that you have the Bear Family CDs. I actually bought my first one (Sunday Concert Plus) from them (for 30 DM). Now several of the online stores seem to have the albums in stock for quick shipment but back when I heard about it (late '97) none of the big online stores could even get it when ordered! As you know from messages in other threads here, the three Bear Family CDs are generally considered the best sounding of the various CDs containing UA albums (not to mention the fact that two of the three have bonus tracks).

And you would probably faint if you knew what I spent for a used copy of that Montreux CD. I already had a tape copy, and had the opportunity to trade for or buy CD-R copies, but I decided that if I got anything more it would be the real CD. The good news is that with the CD, and all the rare albums including the Movin' EP, there are only a total of 7 things to collect, so there is a limit to how broke I will get. Only two more to find! (Of course, that doesn't account for the fact that I have more than one copy of some, ... oh well).

So, having the CD, I know exactly what you mean by that original CD insert. It's a real embarrassment, and given that they apparently didn't worry about infringing on copyright when they released the recordings, I can't imagine why they worried about using a photo of GL also without authorization!

With regards the "The Last Time I saw Her Face" there was some confusion between some of the members about which song Christian was taking about. Mark Potter had mentioned that he had seen Gord do it in concert once and he a some difficulty with the song. I responded to Chritian off the board and related to him that of all Gord's songs this one seems to be the hardest one to perform for a number of reasons. It's difficult to sing because it requires excellent vocal control, zero defect guitar work and you must draw, it seems on personal tradgedy, for the emotional depth to sing it well. You also can't get too deeply in to it or you wind-up blowing the last verse, as I have seen other artists, including myself, do by just flat breaking down. I shared my personal loss with him and he shared his with me. That's the beauty of Gord's songs. Everyone can relate in some way to what he is saying. Everyone has a memory they can hang on his lyrics that endears what ever favorite song they hold so dear to them. I can't remember who mentioned that tissues were provided in the liner for "Stone Cold Sober", but a full box should be provided for " The Last time I Saw Her Face."

I think that VMagee could really shed some light for us all with reagrds to this song if we just coax her a little.

This could be beneficial for the artist in different ways.It could promote his studio albums further.Also it would be better than bootlegs from which the artist doesn't profit.
Only one live album from the 60's from an extensive catalogue is unusal.
It was only a topic to promote communication but the subject of a lack of live work is an interesting one.

Just replace "Anything for Love" with something like "Affair on 8th Avenue" and you have a very enjoyable concert.

Okay, Dan. I really like "Anything For Love". It's the theme song for a screenplay I'm writing. But "Affair on Eighth Avenue" will do just fine for this fantasy concert. I'll make that substitution.

And Char, alas, I haven't had the pleasure of hearing "Farewell to Nova Scotia" although I would dearly love to hear it. I have, however, been told by many people that it is a BEAUTIFUL song.

And I must add one more to my list. "Go My Way" and it would have to be dedicated to Janice. She beat me about the head and shoulders for not including it in mylist and then asked me to write this, by the way. LOL!

Florian: re Pussywillows, Cattails, I have always seen it as a collection of images of the seasons,spring summer fall winter. Really a beautiful song that I can't get enough of. Also, 11 minutes of CRT. Count me in!!!!

Frank v, I agree with you about Hiway Songs and it's powerful ending. "But heading north across that line is the only time I'm flying." I can readily relate to Gord's feelings about going "home".
