Out of all of Gord's songs - and all the people he has written about, WHO would you want to be if you could?
I always wanted to be ANN in Carefree Highway!
My middle name is Ann and I grew up even before Carefree Highway wishing it was my first name because no one ever knew how to spell Charlene. On top of that I had an Italian surname that was no picnic to spell either! Then when Carefree Highway came along and I fell in love with Gord (for many reasons LOL) I remember wishing I was Ann and that I would never leave him not knowing what to do!
How about you?
Char

CAREFREE HIGHWAY - GL
Pickin' up the pieces of my sweet shattered dream
I wonder how the old folks are tonight
Her name was Ann and I'll be damned if I recall her face
She left me not knowin' what to do
Carefree highway, let me slip away on you
Carefree highway, you seen better days
The mornin' after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you

Turnin' back the pages to the times I love best
I wonder if she'll ever do the same
Now the thing that I call livin' is just bein' satisfied
With knowin' I got no one left to blame

Carefree highway, got ta see you my old flame
Carefree highway, you seen better days
The mornin' after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you

Searchin' through the fragments of my dream-shattered sleep
I wonder if the years have closed her mind
I guess it must be wanderlust or tryin' to get free
From the good old faithful feelin' we once knew

Carefree highway, let me slip away on you
Carefree highway, you seen better days

Interesting topic, Charlene, since Anne is my name, I could always relate to Carefree Highway also, although I always hated my name, (too plain!). I had never heard a popular song before with my name in it, so when Carefree Highway came out, I was thrilled. Then when Gord mentioned in his Songbook notes that there really was an Anne, I felt a sudden kinship. Although I would never leave him "not knowin' what to do" either!

I just noticed on my post I left the "E" off my Ann! Mine is spelled ANNE and I always (and still do) thought it was beautiful. I used to write it out - it was simple and elegant - especially with the "E" - that's what clinched it for me!!
Charlene Anne W.
the only song like my name is "Oh Charlena". Lord I hate that song!

Charlene, I would like to be the person in the song "Beautiful". It is so nice to have your significant other think of you in those terms. Too many times I have felt like the singer of IYCRMM...there is a line"I think that I was made for you and you were made for me." That has come so true in my life recently.

I know how you feel about that! "Beautiful" was one of our wedding songs 26 years ago and it is a very wonderful feeling to have someone think that of you. It is my all time favourite Gord song and the one I cry through every time I see him perform it live. I hope you have as much love for all time as you do now.

Man, now you've got me thinking of Ann (no "e") from long ago. She also identified with "Farewell to Annabelle." I do recall her face. And she did leave me not knowing what to do. But life turned out OK. They say if you want to make God laugh tell gim your plans. That certainly proved true in my case. I wish Ann well wherever she is these days.

Back to topic - I wouldn't mind being the kid in "Brave Mountaineers." I suppose at one time I came pretty close to it.

Was there ever a doubt that I'd want to be the Maryann in his "Mountains and Maryann"? He wrote that song for me, don't y'all know, and him not being familiar with my southern roots neglected to split the name like we sometimes do down here. Yeah, right!
Hey, on a side note- has anyone noticed that on Gord's earlier recording of that song, (he mispelled it again!) it was listed as The Mountain and Marian?

I went on a Don Quixote binge the other day and listened to this CD for hours on a road trip. I would like to be Susan from On Susan's Floor. Even though Gord didn't write this one, it is a lovely song, and brings back memories of the 70's, sitting around with friends and singing along while someone played guitar. I would have loved to have been Susan, and have the opportunity to welcome Gord to my door, (and floor?)!!

I'm not real sure who I would want to be but I do know I would not want to be the mother of the child in Circle of Steel. That's got to be an almost hopeless feeling. Circle of Steel is maybe my favorite song. Does he ever perform it live?.

I ruled out wanting to be Gord. Too obvious, plus all that polka dot underwear.

I'd be the captain of "Silver Heels" sailing along in the lee of Christian Island, Georgian Bay, sipping on some whiskey of the highlands, preferably a nice single malt.

A close second choice, the guy with the gal in "Beautiful."

Actually, no reason that I couldn't be both!
Sail all day and then home to someone "made for me." Don't think I can imagine a life better than that.

I'd probably be Dan from "Old Dan's Records". I'm too young to have any 78rpms, but I could play 45rpms & CD's & MP3's "and dance all night!" I also relate to "Beautiful"...I chose that song and Elvis' "And I Love You So" for our wedding in 1986.
After thinking about for awhile, if not Dan, then I'm with Silver Heels in Christian Island. Yes, I'm sure there was a girl on board. Although in my fantasy we'd be on a motorboat...just trolling along. Tom - I Had Beautiful at my wedding too - In the mid-70's tho! And an Elvis song too - I Can't Help Falling In Love With You (Wise Men). And Billy Joel's "You're My Home".
I love Old Dan's Records - it gives images of a happy family coming together and having music unite them in all it's joy.

Who would I want to be? I couldn't resist this topic. I'd want to be the person at the center of these two songs: Whisper My Name and If You Need Me, both from Old Dan's Records. Talk about beautiful songs. They come right after one another on the album - a real one two punch. IYNM has that great line: I've not seen anything like you since I was a man. --- Need I say more. Anyone else agree?

Greetings Char, Florian et al. Charlene, I sense your frustration that there aren't a hundred posts on this. After days of thought, it finally hit me--wouldn't we all want to be "the Painter"? Wouldn't we want to be able to express our thoughts and feelings as he does, on our own? Aren't there others of us out there that "borrow" a line or two when writing to our lady (or man too, I suppose)? (a Topic waiting to happen?) So often some lyric fits just so perfectly--why try to recreate it? "It's already been done, it's already been done..." GL and us "loonies" here just seem to think so much alike and have been through so many of the same things in life; HE just knows how to turn a thought so eloquently and cleaverly, while most of us don't. And you twentysomethings out there...you ain't seen nothing yet. Start counting now of all the times a GL song or lyric applies as you go through life and get back to us in 25 years!
And to all you lovely Ann{e)s out there--might want to check out David Gates' "First" album (1973). Real nice tune "Ann" on it, solid album too.
And finally, my daughter was named Marianne--wonder why--apologies to the Southern Mary Ann--I like 'em both. "All is well...

I want to be the gal on 'Silver Heels'(cos there has to be a girl with him.)
I can feel the wind in my hair and taste the 'whiskey of the Highlands' on my tongue. There's sea salt on my lips while the sun warms my skin and as we 'lean into the wind' and the lee of Christian Island beckons, my cup would runneth over for sure!

I would have to pick the guy in EARLY MORNING RAIN. That song sparked a love for music. So much that I learned the giutar and piano. Even to this day that song is still my favorite.

No problem about that sea salt, Silver Heels,

You've obviously recently been "all the way from Biscayne Bay for a dip in the shining sea", and "all the way back again." That is, if it's possible to sail that far up the St. Lawrence (I doubt it, but you're Welcome to Try).

You'll note that I also pictured myself in the lee of Christian Island, but I did not picture any female companionship on board. I pictured my "Beautiful" back on dry land (perhaps somewhat presumptive on my part). But any Gord fan, male or female, is obviously more than welcome to sail along, even if we have to split the bottle. I've got some Blackberry Wine when the whiskey runs out.

OK guys, now I KNOW I was the first to recognize and thank Silver Heels for raising my pulse on her beautiful version of Christian I.(see "Gord In My Life" thread). And then 2Much & Co. bribes her with Blackberry Wine! Makes a guy wanna file a class action for the rest of us! (JK)
And Silver, you were right all along about the salt--don't these guys know you had to paddle the Pond with your Canary Yellow all the way to Georgian Bay? A real certified sailor! And I DO realize your brilliant four-liner was metaphorically laced; more than one cup runneth over that summer night.

Now for arguments sake I would want to be Sundown.I would love to take care when I came creeping around Gords back stairs. We all know Gord has a signifgant other so I would savour a few seconds, minutes hours with Gord.I would make tea and sit on the mattress on the floor and have him sing to me.With any luck, the sun would never go down on your frienship and we would rise each morning to greet the day with a warm heart and mellow mind

Silver Heels,

Hell, NOW I want to be the deck of that "good old boat"! Always loved heels, and SILVER ones.....help, me Lord, I've sinned again.

There WAS a warm wind last night and in my mind I was "walking on the shore, listen(ing) to the sea" ...

God, I love this site! And I'm glad I seemingly understand--it WAS a risk. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

Char,
Can I please be the lady in the song "Affair on Eighth Avenue"? Can I --huh-- huh -- please?

LOL

"...The perfume that she wore was from some little store
from the down side of town....
.... Her long, flowing hair came softly undone
and it lay all around....
... Then she brushed it down as I stood by her side
in the warmth of her love.
.... Then our fingers entwined like ribbons of light
and she came through the doorway somewhere in the night ...."

(Okay, the lines aren't all necessarily in order, but THAT song pretty much says it all.)

http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

Stay loose, eh?

LAMS

P.S. Char, did you know that there really WAS an Ann? And it was that Ann who is mentioned in "Carefree Highway."

------------------
"Love and maple syrup
go together like the
sticky winds of winter
when they meet....
If you go into the forest
Gaze up through the trees
The sky is white.
You can understand
What makes the forest
Greet the man
Like a mother's only
child ..."

Char's touchy on this one. lol (see prior debate)

My middle name is ANNE. Gord's lady is ANN. There wasn't any discrepancy. No touchiness here. There wasn't any debate. I mentioned I had misspelled my Ann by forgetting the "E". I think it was a Fredian slip or wishful thinking that I was ANN with no "E". LOL I figured there must have been an Ann - just as I'm pretty sure Betty was a girl he knew too.

If I may babble a little bit in between all of these great posts. MAN, you guys and gals are GOOD! Good Stuff!!!

I WAS the guy GL sings about in "It's Worth Believ'n". I WAS the guy in "Ordinary Man".

"There's a breeze from the shore and the waves overlap."

"And as I wander through the cities and the towns, I get so lonesome knowing you could be around."

I don't want to sound negative but those two songs among others, were me. I guess I liked them so much because they really hit home.

I can really relate to the line "I would break the threads away, so I could bleed some more", because that is what I used to do with "It's Worth Believ'n". The song reminded me of my past love. It took me a few years to get over that love, but with GL's music and some help from my friend ("another empty bottle, and another story to tell") things worked out. It was many years ago but I still love those songs. That is all in the past now, (thank God) and I have been happily married since 1977.

Somebody mentions about being the "Painter". I don't think I could go through all the things (failed relationships, etc.)GL went through in his life. I believe he had to go through that to become the artist that he is. I really don't know if I would want that.

sorry for stretching this,

Wes

Well, Wes,
If we're going to go there, then I guess "Endless Wire" was written for me. It is a perfect description of me.

"... I ain't got nothing to hide.
My life is an endless wire.
I got both feet on the ground.
I ain't got no one for hire.

I ain't got a thing to show.
My lives have all expired.
So don't go fooling around
And set my wheels afire.

Down in the dark of a burnt out soul
There's a few good second hand dreams...
Deep in the dark of a heavenly night with you.
Dark in the black of a bottomless hole
There's a few good second-hand scenes...
Deep in the dark of a heavenly blue where the sea runs green.

I ain't got nothing to give.
My life is an endless rhyme
My love's a paperback dream
I ain't got nothing but time.

I ain't got a thing to show.
I don't know my own name;
So don't go fooling around
and set my wheels aflame...."

Ironic how Gord manages to put us in touch with the deepest parts of ourselves, isn't it?

Stay loose, eh?

OK I have stayed away from this one but...I just want to be Gord the singer/songwriter/poet.
I can't sing (although I do).
I couldn't put two words together to describe how I feel to save my life.
I am not a musician.

I wouldn't want Gord's life though, just the talent and the admiration.

We can dream can't we?

Don't you think it has a lot to do with his songwriting?

Just perusing this thread for the first time, and ANNE, you have a lovely name (just like my wife!). When we were dating, I would listen to Carefree Highway and imagine the pain of losing my Anne.
Dan, I feel a lot like you do. I like a lot of pop music, but one of the reasons that I have always been drawn to Gord's music is that if I could be a musician, I would want to be just like him in terms of performance. Until I started reading these messages, I didn't have a very good idea about what Gord the person was really like. I am very happy to learn that he is considerate and not too full of himself.
Now, as to a character from a song: I like the central character from Crossroads.
"I've seen the country growin' like a fair and mighty thing
And on the still of a summer night I've heard the mountains ring.
In the good land, Iwas young and I was strong
No one dared to call me son
Happy just to see my day's work done
See my day's work done!"

Right now I'm on a highway just east of Omaha
Riding shotgun on the biggest rig you ever saw
With forty tons of pig iron and a trucker known as Bill
All the way to Windsor, we've got some miles to kill
