Yes, Claudia, as I said before, we are all severe nut cases (völlig bekloppt). But I sure learned a lot from those beautiful lyrics- and what we love is easily remembered. One of these days I have to talk about that exam I once took and me and a friend (also a big fan) were accused of cheating, because we -sitting next to each other- were the only persons of about 150 who knew what words??- muskeg and navvies. The title of the translation was-you already guessed it- The building of the railroad!!So we went home, grabbed our LPs and put them on the Dean`s desk . Cheating-ha.! We were off the hook, but were advised not to give the ´thumbs up´sign next time. So now I told the story already. Vera

Doug
05-29-2007, 11:18 AM
That is a very funny story, Vera. No wonder, nobody but you and your friend knew those two words as they're certainly not found in your every day conversation. So Gordon even helped to get good grades... ;)

Are you torturing your students now with those obscure words??? Before an excam you could give a hint that it wouldn't hurt to listen to this or that Lightfoot tune and memorize the lyrics. Not only would they learn beautiful poetry but the youngsters get also introduced to one of the greatest singer/songwriters. Two birds with one stone, so to speak... :D

Quite right,Claudia, just two weeks ago I started a new teaching unit - subject: "The Red Man"- with our beloved song ´Cherokee Bend`.The girls liked it a lot, the boys not that much -not cool enough, I suppose. But of course I tell all my students to closely listen to their respective favorite music for reasons stated above. Yes, this truly is one great song and I could listen to it in an endless loop - together with Shellfish.

"Thinking of things to do
Thinking of things to say
Thinking of things divine

...this song touches my heartstrings every time I listen to it, along with some other on that CD but this is my favorite. I don't know where it would be on my best of 150, certainly at least in the top 5

I wish he would play it in concert. I wonder why he only seems to do 'Clouds of Loneliness'. I like that one too but there are so many other wonderful songs on his lastest Album.

You pulled me in Borderstone, that is one of my favorites: Too Much to Lose

How about: "We've both had enough of that wonderful stuff"

I think that is one of the most honest and humorous lines Gord ever wrote.

With 3 mystery lyrics to guess, I had to jump in:

Borderstone - IF CHILDREN HAD WINGS

Kathy No 4 - LINDA [I think]
LONG WAY BACK HOME [I know]

How about: I was only trying to get by with some
of life's amenities. Well, nothing's
free.

Obviously nobody here is prepared to guess my "Out to lunch" lyric so here is a clue
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/cbctv.jpg
And another lyric snippet I came across whilst google image searching
"This rented car never went so far
But with each passing mile one more dream had turned to clay"

I don't think so Mr Broderstone
Because the best I could find by googling for
the obvious ("back to 1935" lightfoot)
was
http://begonias.typepad.com/srubio/music/index.html
Steve Rubio's online Life
which manages to say on the same page

6. Alberta Hunter, “You Can’t Tell the Difference After Dark.” What the heck, let’s go back to 1935. “I may not be so appealin’, but I’ve got that certain feelin’.”

7. Ghostface Killah, “Dogs of War.” 1935 too old for you? How about 2006?

and a 15 sing setlist that included
Gordon Lightfoot, "If You Could Read My Mind"
Meanwhile is nobody but nobody going to try to guess my "Out to Lunch" a genuine GL lyric snippet . the clue I gave (the 1968 CBC program)above actually shows tbe actual and ultra rare unreleased song

Right good guess John. :) Unfortunatley,I used all my brian power and I cannot even begin to make a guess to the reference in the cartoon.

Anyone else?

ah, I guess I'll take a stab at the reference, Assuming it is not a reference to the previous song that was guessed at.
It could refer to the tune "Let It Ride",

Check again above I believe that I said very clearly:-
"(the 1968 CBC program) above actually shows tbe actual and ultra rare unreleased song"
I cannot see any reference to "Let it ride" in that program and in any case "Let It Ride " is
not an unreleased song it was written and released a long time after 1968
