Muffled yes, but never thought Id hear Gord do that one. Just him and the guitar, sounded almost as if that could be one of his song. Very good Joveski, Thank's for sharing.

Interesting! Thanks, Joveski. Nice to hear just Gord and the guitar. Can anyone dicipher what he is saying when not singing?

Interesting. You dug up a good one, joveski.
It really does sound like it could have been one of his own songs, he sings it so well. I wish it were better quality recording, but still very nice!

I was intending to start a new topic
provisionally entitled "This Is Your Song Diana" but was unsure if , despite the Gord connections , I could dare to post it on the general Discussion Forum then luckily I remembered this old topic, and although Mende's upload link has expired, those of you who have heard Gord's version may recall that the sound quality was not just "muffled" but truly disgusting!
I thought of this topic after watching on Sunday evening NBC television's one hour highlights version of Sundays 6 hour Princes UK "Concert For Diana" from the newly reopened and rebuilt Wembley Stadium,
http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/images/2006/08/16/aerial_440x293.jpg
and which Sir Elton John opened with a very heartfelt rendition of his very first hit "Your Song"
of which I see at least three people have already uploaded videos for example
Elton John - Your Song live at Concert For Diana July 1 2007
Live in London, England on July 1 2007
4:05
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlRpNh2txyQ
alternatively:-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxvdoYORqpM
In addition and to tie in with the recent flurry of comparisons of Gord's "old" and present voices
in fact if you search on youtube for "Elton John Your Song " you will get a staggering 923 results, including of course many amateur covers etc and others clearly showing how Elton's voice has also changed over the decades
For example there is a black and white 'Your Song" from 1970 at:-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIGfpgakrJE
and one in colour and also from 1970 which I clearly recall seeing live as my first glimpse of this about to become megastar:-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvaycEs1iqM
Possibly the most interesting and relevant is a splendid and clever composite video made by splicing together at least a dozen clips from a selection of video performances of Your Song with Elton in varied costume and voice which the compiler aptly describes as:-
"A beautiful video of multiple performances of "Your Song" merged into one showing the various shapes, and sizes of Elton John"
watch out for his "quack"!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxXr6KILrHE 4:23
the colour 1970 video is one of my all time favourite music videos
my very favourite fluctuates between the great Lionel Richie "Hello" video see:-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDZcqBgCS74 5:27
"One of the greatest love songs of all time. The video is a little fraky though but it's nice to see a music video that actually has something to do with the song."
and a lovely cover of Bryan Adams 1985 hit that became an international number one in 2002
this is usually referred to by its full title of "D.J. Sammy with Yanou featuring Do-Heaven"
where "do" is the abbreviated (stage) name of a young Dutch girl Dominique van Hulst (http://www.hot.ee/dopage/)
http://www.youtube.com/v/VF_gH2BWNjc
whilst trying to find that video I found this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZ4uCgkdRtI
Princess Diana Tribute
with a montage of pictures on the same version of Heaven which brings us nicely full cycle and tears to my eyes just remembering the tragic events of 10 years ago at the end of next month. At that time I just might be able to watch one of my late mother's VHS tapes
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/images/diana.jpg
and possibly even the tape I made during that funeral when of course Elton so memorably sang the modified version of "Candle in the Wind"
(which he had said he would never sing again and apparently did not do on Sunday, as the Sunday Concert.. see another GL relevancy!! was supposed to be a celebration of her life not death)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUPA87p8Exk
just one of 15 videos on youtube of:-
Goodbye English Rose at her funeral
others being
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZE948ExCvCM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUPA87p8ek
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIJIBo9bJk

I can only suggest Dear char that you try again because for me at least Mende's link correctly surprise surprise opens the page:-
http://www.sendspace.com/file/jdal5f
on which I read reassuringly
This is the download page for:
Name: gl-yoursong.mp3
Size: 2MB
The download link is located below.
scrolling down seemed the obvious thing to do where I was then delighted to read
that link which for me clearly said
Download Link: gl-yoursong.mp3
plus this in a red box
The download link has been updated (error: #10).
You may now download the file
and it is in fact a hyperlink to:-
http://fs05n4.sendspace.com/dl/ffae5437c2a3adb99aa252e42e0dd373/468d10da12448c0e/jdal5f/gl-yoursong.mp3
so right clicking on it and then "save target as" works for me and I have now redownloaded the requisite file and it took aboot 20 minutes total on the stoopidly lethargic dial-up:-
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/your_song.jpg

i tried the hyperlink to 'save target as' and after an hour i stopped it as an mp3 usually takes a minute on my system.

I also have dial-up, and it worked fine. I just clicked on joveski's updated link....scrolled down to a pulsating red arrow pointing to the song....clicked on the link....LEFT clicked on "save".....picked a destination for the file....and began waiting (due to dial-up).
P.S. there was no error message associated with the link.

I am assuming by "John's link" that you were referring to the same link as Joveski's
i.e:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/jdal5f
but in fact both that link and the longer one
I showed viz:-
http://fs05n4.sendspace.com/dl/ffae5437c2a3adb99aa252e42e0dd373/468d10da12448c0e/jdal5f/gl-yoursong.mp3
most handily open the desired download page as evidenced by the following screenshots:-
http://johncfowles.fileave.com/images/Download_page1.jpg
the top of the page showing the URL and nary a sign of a "404" error anywhere
http://johncfowles.fileave.com/images/Download_page2.jpg
where one should then scroll down to as directed
(updated??)no I do not know what that means either
http://johncfowles.fileave.com/images/Download_page3.jpg
what appears if you are so bold as to click that link
http://johncfowles.fileave.com/images/Download_page4.jpg
the painfully lethargic dial up download just starting
somewhat reminiscent of the downloading screenshot I previously displayed methinks
So what's your problem?
I can only suggest that you and anybody else still having a problem try again
Just trying to help you understand

Interesting! It IS a song that permutes perfectly to his palette. Almost as if Elton & Bernie were inspired by his style for that one. The recording's pretty low tech. Who's Skip Weshner? Also, I wonder why Gord opted to strum rather than arpeggiating (aka "finger picking") which he does very well.

indeed from the above wiki link
"Skip Weshner (1927-1995) was a disc jockey on stations in New York and Los Angeles from the mid 1950's until the mid 1980's.
In particular, he hosted a popular show on KRHM-FM in Los Angeles. He is known for inviting artists such as Gordon Lightfoot
and John Denver to his show" and Wayne describes Gord's visits in four of the first seven entries on:-
http://www.lightfoot.ca/radioapp.htm
As I understand it, since Skip's death a number of recordings from his broadcasts have surfaced and a simple "weshner" search
right here on corfid reveals Gloria's posting in February 2005:-
topic: For Trade: Lightfoot 1968-70 KRHM The Skip Weshner Tapes 4CDR's
at:-
http://www.corfid.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=003004
these have also been available from time to time as a "torrent"
"torrents" wot r they then??
Again see corfid for some details
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=003236#000003
I believe that the original prime source of torrents was http://www.easytree.com (http://www.easytree.org/), and although that site seems to have for most practical purposes disappeared, it has been supplanted by
dimeadozen.org (http://http//www.dimeadozen,org) for torrent listings, yet there is still a most useful "artwork" depository at:-
http://artwork.easytree.org/
which is a page entitled
"artwork.easytree.org - Yet Another Artwork Source".
There you will find an enticing "Artist Selection" tab clicking which moves on to show a drop down artists box logically prefaced by "Please select an artist:"
scrolling the resulting list about half way down you will find betwixt Dave Liebman (who he??) and Lightning Hopkins Sam
a familiar name:-
Gordon Lightfoot (9)
clicking which will open:-
a GL page showing 9 sets of artwork including 3 for the various "Skip Weshner" CDs for example
<a href="http://artwork.easytree.org/artwork/grdl/grdl_1968-1970_skip-weshner-show-los-angeles-ca_inlay-card.jpg" target="_blank">
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/9035/skip640lz8.jpg</a>
(Click on that picture for a larger version of this sample CD jewel case inlay)
and better (less garish) artwork for the 1967 Montreux Festival
note that all these items are ROIO
(Recordings Of Independant Origin) as dimeadozen likes to call them in their site's disclaimer
"DIME is merely a BitTorrent tracker for audio and video recordings of independent origin (ROIO) which have not been officially released. No audio or video content is hosted here. We only provide meta information files for the ROIOs.
If you're an artist (or a legal representative of an artist or its estate) and you don't want your ROIOs shared on DIME for
free among your fans, you may opt out any time by sending e-mail to the site admin. We will then put you in our list of not
allowed artists, known as the NAB list. This will halt all sharing of your ROIOs using DIME's trackers within minutes.
BTW, the ROIOs exist, you can't make them vanish. So, why not let your fans get them for free from one another instead of
having to purchase them from commercial bootleggers on auction sites"

indeed from the above wiki link
<a href="http://artwork.easytree.org/artwork/grdl/grdl_1968-1970_skip-weshner-show-los-angeles-ca_inlay-card.jpg" target="_blank">
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/9035/skip640lz8.jpg</a>
(Click on that picture for a larger version of this sample CD jewel case inlay)
and better (less garish) artwork for the 1967 Montreux Festival
note that all these items are ROIO

Three others that immediately come to mind are "Farewell To Nova Scotia"(in circulation in two versions, the better being the one performed on BBC television in 1971 or 1972, and Ian Tyson's great "Four Strong Winds".
and the favourite of myself and Ron Jones
1968's Face Of A Thousand People (http://www.lightfoot.ca/faceof.htm)
plus inumerable other rare recordings of songs such as "Partners", 2000/2001's "Nighttime" and
the rest of the 30 odd songs allegedly available in total of the pre aneurism studio demos that led to 9 being included on Harmony.
Any others people??

Anybody who has as I have for sometime hankered after at least hearing the Skip Weshner tapes (especially after Mende Joveski's Your Song teaser a while ago see
http://www.corfid.com/vbb/showpost.php?p=147013&postcount=6
(It appears that his mp3 is no longer available on the limited time file storage website he elected to utilise)
Thos who have not yet heard the 4 CD's worth of off radio recordings will be pleased to hear that a complete set of High quality lossily compressed mp3s (sampled at the highest rate of 320KBPS) is available for download at rapidshare the links and contents of the 4 CDs are listed at:-
http://www.guitars101.com/forums/f90/gordon-lightfoot-skip-weshner-tapes-1968-1970-fm-133639.html
Alternatively those who can manipulate a torrent or who want a perfect losslessly compressed file set will find a new entry at
http://www.dimeadozen.org
In accordance with Dime's rules those files are in "FLAC" (Free Lossless Audio Codec) format the good news is that flacs may be played in Windows Media Player after installing the free K-lite Codec pack from:-
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm
and/or burnt to an audio CD using Express Burn which will itself convert them (and can also be set to produce a "continuous" CD with the gap between tracks set to zero
When and if you avail yourself of this opportunity you will be able to hear a pair of unreleased "songs" in addition to the aforementioned "Your Song" these being
"The Seabird Song" and a brief snatch of "The Doomsday Song" ( the latter both sung by Gord and recited by him)
also featured is another unreleased song called
"Take It Or leave It".
A further alternative is to simply listen to the lower quality streaming version also now available on sugrmegs

Nothing worked for me.
Waddaya mean Bill I gave 5 valid links are you saying that none worked for you?? the first one is here at corfid. I have just rechecked all 5 no problem at all
Dimeadozen is only useful if you are a member as has been dicussed here several times before

Bill, both of my Macs (old G5 on Tiger and new MacBookPro on SnowLeopard) handles this option easily.... used the free version of rapidshare and then the far files were burst into a series of mp3s that i brought into iTunes
too bad the Your Song quality (either edited or unedited versions) aren't of the teriffic quality that the other recordings and interviews are...that one 28 minute interview segment is a hoot...Skip does a heck of a lot of the talking, eh (i like him, he' a ballad salad kind of guy:) )
love hearing early raw version of Looking at the Rain... Skip really dug that fresh Bitter Green rendition...wow, Gord's voice is hardly baritone for these (other than the awesome Last Time delivery) so suits the Doomsday witty vibe
that one actually makes me think of Hamilton harbour, lol
thank you, John...i'd heard tidbits of bad quality audio prior but not this feast!
Cool how Skip points out that the first time Gord has heard the strings added to Gords last album was at Skips house on his new hifi and that jamming and listening in the future will be event better sounding with his new room with the cathedral ceiling
Skip kind of blew off Gord's performance of Your Song. But Gord made him backtrack inquiring as to why he didn't like it. Lol
He said that track hadn't grabbed him initially the way Border Song had. He mentions another track. Can anyone make out the title?
I need you to turn to?
