Showdown #12
Endless Wire 11 Keepin' on Yearning 2

Well alright. Seems that Endless Wire is the winner. That was the first Gordon Lightfoot album I bought. I played it over and over. I enjoy the title track too. Gord has not played that one live for a while now. We'll go back to some more mellow songs now. I predict this next matchup will be a toughie. These are two songs about a yearning or a longing to be with someone that you miss. Which song do you prefer?

Shadows

or

Song for a Winter's Night

Have fun trying to figure out what song to choose. Try not to loose sleep or tear your hair out.

That is not a fair match up - they are both equal.

This is SO not fair!! I love both of them equally!! I can't do it. I can't choose. They are both beloved.

By the way, I come by that affectation naturally -- I'm from the San Fernando Valley, which was made famous by Moon Zappa in her famous song back in the 80's in which she made "Val-speak" a household word.

On the other hand, I could say it this way: "This is so NOT fair!...." and make it Chandler Bing-esque!!

Now I think all of us can agree that we love pretty much all of Gord's songs. By choosing one over the other does not mean you do not like the other song. Just look at it this way. Today, before you run out the door, if you had the time to listen to one of the two songs, which one would you put on? Your choice might be different tomorrow as our moods dictate our choices. Remember this is just a fun and interesting activity. Choosing one song over the other is not a decision that you will be held accountable for, neither will you be deemed unfaithful. Take a plunge. Go for it. Make a choice.

I'll take the plunge, Minstrel Man! For me it would be "Song For a Winter's Night", simply because I am most definitely a lover of the winter storms, and because of the memories it evokes when I listen.

Sorry, still not a fair match up, they are still equal. If your senario is true and I could only choose one - I would leave late because I would listen to both. That is my choice.

Shadows is a great song, no doubt.

Song for a Winter's Night, however, is a fantastic, classic, memorable song and one of GL's very best. It took me to a different place the very first time I heard it over thirty years ago on Gord's Gold. The picture he paints with just the first two lines is enough for me. It would definitely make my top three if I were to list Gord's best songs. I venture to say that many others would place it that high, as well.

Needless to add, Song for a Winter's Night gets my vote.

This is an easy one for me. Shadows is very good, but Song For A Winter's Night is a true Gord classic. I put Song/Winter up there with his absolute best.

Oh boy! I love these songs, but I will choose Song for a Winter's Night, only because I absolutely love his earlier songs. Shadows is one of my top albums, though.

It's Song For A Winter's Night for me. One of my all time favorites.

For me, this was a much easier choice than the Don Quixote showdown.

Shadows Both songs are absolutely breath taking. But I never understood why Shadows was not a big radio hit.

Okay...I have taken the opportunity to go back and listen to both. On CD and on "Live In Reno". So,yes,I'm changing my answer.

By the ultimatley slimmest possible of margins (you do the math)I choose:

Shadows. :) (In my heart, they're still equal though.) ;)

I don't find this as gut-wrenching as some of you- Shadows. The words, the music, his voice, his intensity . . . I love it.

This was a close(ish) one in my mind but I would place "Shadows" in front by the length of Barry Manilow's nose... (sorry Mousie!)

Welcome Yaz8. Came in on a rough showdown didn't you? you will love it here though.

I also love both songs and they are both fantastic in concert - but I would have to put Song for a Winter's Night ahead by a dog's hair.

Finally a choice between superb Gord songs instead of the recent throwaways.

SFAWN has been beautifully covered by several artists, which is some indication of the strength of the song. It is hauntingly beautiful in its melody and lyrics.

Shadows is also haunting, but I've never really felt that GORD actually felt all the emotion underlying it. Some of the emotion, but not all. It doesn't mean that the song doesn't convey that emotion tho. It does.

SFAWN is an A++ and Shadows is an A+.

SFAWN by a wisp of snow.
