My son is doing a project on on Native Canadians...Gordon Lightfoot is his topic. My question is this...which native Canadian (Indian) band does/did he belong to? We have been unable to find out this info. Does anyone know?

Thanks for your help.

He's not a member of nor descended from any Native Canadian, Native American or Indian tribe.
According to Gord, he's of Scottish decscent. I believe his quote was "I'm Scottish all the way" He said he wished he was Indian..but he's not. Lightfoot is not a Native North American name...its Scottish/English. Sorry.

Julie,
Sundreme is correct. Gord also quoted that there were many
families in his home town with the last name of Lightfoot and HIS
family was the only one that was NOT Indian.

However, Gord IS a native Canadian as he was born in Orillia. I'm of Scandinavian descent, but since I was born in America, I am a native American.
So, your son can safely sayGord is a native Canadian for his school project.

If you would like some help with your son's project, please e-mail
me privately at loveandmaplesyrup@yahoo.com. I think I can
answer many of your questions. And if I don't have the exact answer you need, I can get it very
quickly.

Okay, I will probably be beaten about the head and shoulders,
but, well, trust me on this one. LOL!

Stay loose, eh?

P.S. I don't know why my message is going all over the board and out of format, but well .... that's computers for you!

Leslie - up here anyway - native implies aboriginal usually. I was born in Canada and am a native but it would have to be explained that I am not an aboriginal native because of that connection. First Nations people, aboriginals, natives - those terms are usually synonomous.
I am asked if my husband is native/aborigianl also - he's Scottish descent like Gord - Lightfoot and Westbrook!
LOL

Char,
LOL! Actually, I think that was what I was trying to say. You can be a native American without being an American Indian (which is no longer a politically correct term to use). So I figured you could be a native Canadian without belonging to a "tribe."

I think you and me were saying basically the same thing. I guess what it boils down to is Gord IS a native Canadian (born and raised in Canada) and Julie's son can safely use him in his school project.

I COULD be wrong here, so please correct me if I am. And if I've misconstrued something, please forgive me.

You .... you .... Loonie, you! LOL!

LAMS: The problem of your quote going all over the board is just a precursor of the havoc that awaits us if Al Gore, inventor of the internet, loses the presidency due to the chad recount.

I hope your son is still allowed to continue with his report on Gordon Lightfoot, even though his ancestors are Scottish.

I'd like to add two tidbits:

1.
At a very young age, Gordon Lightfoot went to an audition and they expected an 'Indian' to turn up http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

2.
Steve Foster made a comment about Gordon Lightfoot having the "coolest real-name" in showbusiness. I guess we can all agree on that.

Both tidbits are quoted from my poor memory, so please feel free to correct me if I got the facts wrong http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif

I am not sure if Lightfoot is half Indian or not, but he sure has those "cherokee cheekbones". I am told that he might be half Indian, but I saw a picture of his parents and they look white.

One of the First Nation websites that I frequent has a link http://www.nativecelebs.com/native5.htm that lists Gordon Lightfoot as a Native Celeb...singer. This info is credited to a fan. If this is truly in error, perhaps somebody should let the webmaster/mistress know so his name can be removed.

those born in Canada are natives - that is a fact but we are not "Native Canadians" that designation refers to aboriginals, First Nations People etc. I am a native "OF" Canada not a "native Canadian" This is the distinction between the two.
that's how I have interpreted the goings-on up here anyway.
char
Gord has no "Native" heritage. He has Scottish heritage from both parents I believe. I have Scottish/Italian!! and now I am a Westbrook!
LOL

I remember an interview Lightfoot gave to one of the "rock magazines" in the 70's(I don't recall which one). He stated that because of his name he was often confused as being of Native American heritage (as in North American). He said he was of old English/Scotch heritage. His ancestors were Torries in the English colonies who fled during the Revolutionary War. They fled to Canada and were the first white settlers of Orelia, Ontario. He is not of Aboroginal heritage. Hope this helps..............Joe
