According to Wayne Francis' site, he's been nominated for four of them, but never won. This is (shamelessly) taken from Wayne's site:
1968
BEST FOLK PERFORMANCE
Judy Collins - Both Sides Now; Bob Dylan - John Wesley Harding; Incredible String Band - The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter; Irish Rovers - The Unicorn; GORDON LIGHTFOOT - DID SHE MENTION MY NAME; Peter, Paul and Mary - Late Again
1971
BEST POP PERFORMANCE MALE
James Taylor - You've Got A Friend; Perry Como - It's Impossible; Neil Diamond - I Am...I Said; GORDON LIGHTFOOT - IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND; Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine
Lightfoot was asked to perform his song at this award show, but when he was told he had to sing a condensed two and a half minute version, he declined. Good man, Gord!
1977
BEST POP VOCAL PERFORMANCE MALE
Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key Of Life; George Benson - This Masquerade; GORDON LIGHTFOOT - THE WRECK OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD; Lou Rawls - You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine; Boz Scaggs - Silk Degrees
SONG OF THE YEAR (Songwriter's Award)
I Write The Songs - Bruce Johnston; Afternoon Delight - Bill Danoff; Breaking Up Is Hard To Do - Neil Sedaka, Howard Greenfield; This Masquerade - Leon Russell; THE WRECK OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD - GORDON LIGHTFOOT

So, substance abuse was a widespread problem among those who vote for grammy winners, especially in 1977 for song of the year. I suppose if the Grammy is the best they could do, Gord really doesn't deserve one. He deserves a statue, replicas of which could be awarded. Called the "Gordon", they would honor those whose talent, longevity and artistry redefine the singer-songwriter label and take music into new directions, touching hearts in places previously skirted around by less talented grammy winners who used pseudo-clever pop cliches and hooks in place of artistry.

I really do believe that Gordon will get a grammy one day, in the form of a lifetime
achievement award, I just hope it's not posthumous!

i always thought the grammy awards are rigged. correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't they decided by the music industry instead of general public?.
a lot of artists (incl. GL) who deserve one or more than what they have, haven't recived more.
there are artists out there that don't give a toss about them as well.
when the nominees are listed, it's pretty easy to guess who will get one and who will miss out.

I wonder if he sealed his doom by refusing to play at the Grammy show where they wanted him to truncate the song...these record execs have very long memories, I'm afraid...I sure would love to see Gord get a lifetime award, though.

I found a clip on You Tube about his song of the year nomination.
YouTube - 19th 1976 Grammy Awards Song Of The Year
Gord's in the audience, but his face is half blocked out from the nose down.
It's too bad he lost.

And strangely enough in this video the guy he lost to was Brian Johnston of the Beach Boys who wrote "I Write The Songs". I thought it was Barry Manilow, who wrote that one, although it was Manilow who made it a hit.
Man, when I watch these clips, I learn a lot about music.
"I write the songs"...I absolutely HATE that song! It's no wonder I ended up listening to so much of Gord in the 70s.
Indeed the Grammies are voted by the industry just as the Oscars are. I don't always like the results but I'd like them less if it became like the People's Choice awards that are strictly the general public voting.
Sure they screw up sometimes. That one for best song is a doozie. There are loads of such awards that leave you scratching your head. Nature of the beast.

It sure is too bad.
I believe it's Cathy Coonley sitting next to him, on his right... mother of Eric Lightfoot.

yep - that was Cathy Coonley beside him..
when my daughter hears a lot of these 'unfortunate' songs she says to me - "now I know why you listened to only Lightfoot/Kristofferson/Chapin/Taylor etc. back then."

Speaking of SNL and SCTV and this clip I pointed out to you.
Hear's a clip of SNL's Will Ferrell portraying the role of Anchorman, Rob Burgandy.
He may not agree with you guys on Song of The Year 1976 (sorry, don't take this offensively), but I'm showing this to point out that you are not alone in the Grammy's Decision for that category.
Check out what Anchorman says in this video between 0:16 to 0:21, and imagine what his reaction would be, after seeing the Grammy clip I previously showed you (hahahahahaha).

It would be nice if he did get one for being such a prolific entertainer. Another thing that I'd like to see is Gordon one day being inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall Of Fame, if he hasn't been already.

yeah, R&R HOF would be great and also the Songwriters HOF (National Academy of Popular Music and not exclusively American songwriters). For the latter...paying members of the Academy (was $50/yr when I was a member) get a ballot of nominees for the annual induction. Not one I ever voted for won...but they all eventually ended up inducted.
Fans can do their part by appealing to the board members or individuals responsible for nominations.

Do you have an address or an E-mail address so that people can give them a shout? If you do, then I'd probably be amongst one of the first to do so.

Here's a link with names/bios of the board members: http://www.songhall.org/about
Better yet - I'll try to find a tele# to call or I'll email this week to find out if a writing campaign would indeed be taken into consideration. Also, I'd like to find out if Gordon had ever been listed as a nominee on a ballot.

Judging by comments and speeches that you as Lightheads and Lightfoot experts have heard about in regards to his receiving (winning) and being nominated (losing) for awards in general, how would you believe he has taken it?
And have any of you ever spoken personally to Gord about the Grammys or about this clip?
If so, what was his response?
