A second post. What would you think are Lightfoot's three best ballads. A hard choice and decision to make because he has crafted so many wonderful and memorable ballads.

Only three, huh? For what it's worth, my picks are IFYCRMM, Now and Then, and Shadows. So many feelings and images are so simply and honestly expressed in these three.

Three? Only three? http://www.corfid.com/ubb/confused.gifCome on now! If you give me a couple of days,I could come up with a top 40 list at the very least! We're all (Obviously) very avid listners of Gordon Lightfoot and I think pretty much all of them would be as good as the other. In fact,I think I'll go home and make some tapes of all his best ballads. Three indeed. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif Borderstone, outta here and Alberta Bound! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Take it from an English teacher. A ballad is a poem, usually sung, which tells a story. In the past, there have been very rigid rules for ballad writing. Now, writer's have played with the rules a bit. The key element in ballads is the telling of a story. Other elements include a consistent rhythm, the use of stanzas, and the use of a refrain. Gord has written many ballads, for example CRT, WofEF, Don Quiote. However, a few of the songs mentioned above would not qualify since they do not really tell a story, for example Shadows. Hope this helps.

P.S. Sorry about the apostrophe error in the posting above. Thought I'd mention this before you guys roasted the "English teacher."

I know, three is too tough, and Borderstone, go for the 40, however, let's use hfan's criteria. Frankly, I have to admit that I can't really think of only 3 myself.

I always thought that a ballad was a love song. Gord always refers to "I'll Prove My Love" as a ballad. I looked it up in Websters because I really didn't know what exactly a ballad was. Here's what I found to go along with Hfan.
1. A romantic or sentimental song with the same melody for each stanza. 2. A song or poem which tells a story in short stanzas or simple words, with repitition, refrain etc. 3. A slow, sentimental popular song, especially a love song.

For heaven's sake! The modern contemporary defenition of a ballad is quite simply:A Slow Song. "Beautiful" is a ballad. "Cotton Jenny" is a toe-tapper. "Sundown" is contemporary country & pop music. "Pop" is short for popular. The classic sense of Ballad, yes,is a poem or song that tells a story. Believe it or not,the theme song of Gilligan's Island is called,"The Ballad Of Gilligan's Isle." Hmmmm..I wonder how Gord would sound doing that one?? http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif The legend lives on,of 7 castaways gone. On the big ship called S.S. Minnow. Who's fault can it be,I'll give guesses of three, but sure it's Gilligan we all know! Borderstone, outta here and Alberta Bound! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif
